10 pointers to learn French faster!

1 – Change your surroundings in French and set-up every devices that you use in the target language. Set-up your phone in French, your computer, your pad and any other devices that you use on a daily basis.

2 – Same logic for all the applications and software that you use. Set-up your Gmail or whatever  messaging service you’re using in French, same for your WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, Outlook, Office, Internet browser etc. Make sure that everything you do online or on your devices is done in French, it will be a bit tricky at first, but you will adapt and you will learn some vocabulary without realizing it!

3 – Each day try to spend 15 minutes reading the news in French, here are few links:

-> It might be frustrating because you don’t understand what the article is saying, so what you can do is read an article in English ( or your native language) on the same topic and then read about the same topic in French afterwards. You will understand much more -> It’s important to force yourself to read, you start slowly by reading one article a day, make sure you finish the article even tough it is difficult. READING is the BEST way to learn a language as weird as it sounds.

-> BUT it is important that you read something that you enjoy, something that you have fun with, you don’t want to be bored otherwise your brain won’t retain. If you like sports, read sports news in French, if you like cooking read stuff about cooking in French, cinema, music, travel etc. here are few links:

4 – Try to optimize your “Down Time”, which is the time you spend walking to the office, waiting for a bus, for someone, doing your groceries etc. During that time try to listen to French podcast or French radio. Look online and download some podcast.

5 – You can read teenagers’ book, like Harry Potter, the vocabulary is very simple and you will understand the history, therefore it will be less frustrating. Reading a story that you have read as a child will also help because you already know the story. It’s not frustrating and quite fun actually. You can find many books on amazon for beginner or intermediate level students. I found it very useful.

6 – Try to use Flashcard applications, you can use the following websites to create your own deck, or select already set-up vocabulary list. The app will remember the words you struggle with and the algorithm will make sure they appear more until you get the right answer, it’s a flashcard system – You see a word in French and you need to give the translation or vice-versa. Download these apps on your phone and when you have a moment try to do a set. Just have fun with it!

7 – Everyday try to listen to French news, put it in the background, the idea is to familiarize yourself with the pronunciation of French being spoken normally by natives.

8 – Watch movies and tv shows in French, if you have Netflix you can find a lot of them. Try to find a good one that you want to follow (series), at first watch it with English subtitles and then watch it in French with French subtitles. Here are some suggestions, look them up:

DAEFLE access test / Test daccès au DAEFLE

Hey people!

Alright so as a follow-up to my previous post, I wanted to describe the DAEFLE access test in more detail. Basically, before being able to apply for the training through the CNED you need to pass a test with the Alliance Francaise, who is partnered up with the CNED for this training.

I passed that test beginning of May 2016, and I was pretty nervous about it because, you know, it had been ages since I took test (last time was May 2012…); anyway if you are stressing out, don’t worry because this test is very accessible (although you need to pay £85 to take it…). The aim is just to check that you are able to write correctly in French and that you have a basic knowledge of the language (so if you are a native speaker and you have read more than 5 books in your life you’re good to go).

I was quite stressed out before the test and after as well, especially as you need to wait almost 2 months for the results. I took the test in Alliance Francaise de Londres, and they need to send all the copies to the Alliance in Paris.

The test is divided in 2 parts. The first one is an orthographical mistake correction where you are asked to correct a letter written by someone in French. The grading scale is out of 20 points (classic French scale) where you gain +0,5 pts for a mistake correctly spotted, +0.5pts for a mistake correctly corrected, -0.5pts for a mistake wrongly spotted and -.05pts for a wrong mistake still corrected, meaning you need to spot 20 mistakes and correct them. Don’t worry - most of them are obvious!

The second part is the writing one; you have 2h15 to write on argumentative essay about an article provided. You are asked to write between 700 and 900 words. You will need to provide a structured essay, present your arguments on the topic, and illustrate with examples. Writing an essay is quite scary especially if you have not done that since university, but if you follow the classic thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis structure, it should work. The topic is on education within society and you will need to show that you have an opinion. That’s what they are interested in.  When I took the test, it was an article from the Nouvel Obs. on the idea of making students pay to access university.The main argument from the article was that often in the French system, going to university is just the “easy” choice for many students who still don’t know what they want to do, and therefore the amount of student failing after the 1st year of uni is so significant. The grading scale is also on 20 points.

To conclude, you have nothing to worry about ! Read the French press to keep you updated on the French situation - especially when it comes to education. Don’t be afraid by the length of the essay (between 700 and 900 words) as when you start writing you will see that the ideas and the content start flowing and you will easily reach the word count in your essay. Re-read your work twice, correct all the grammar, syntax any orthographical typo you might have made and you should be good to go!

After getting the results you will be able to liaise with the CNED to apply for the 10 months training (but as you probably know if you read that post, it’s quite pricey, approx, 1400 €)

So as quick a summary for someone who are interested to take that test and study to obtain the DAEFLE here are my recommendation for the test.

·         Read the French press especially these magazines such as l’Express, Le Nouvel Obs, Le point etc.

·         Get information about the situation on education in France

·         Try to write an essay on education, whatever the topic is

·         Try to relax, it’s not that complicated, if you are a native speaker and can properly write without making 10 mistakes in a sentence you are fine

·         Have a look at this TED talk on education, it’s just fascinating!

Ok, donc pour faire suite à mon précèdent post, j’ai voulu décrire le test d’accès au DAEFLE plus en détails. Avant que vous puissiez vous inscrire sur le site du CNED pour cette formation, vous devez passer un test avec l’Alliance Française, qui est partenaire de cette formation.

J’ai passé le test début Mai 2016, et je dois avouer que j’étais assez anxieux parce que bon, ça fait un bail que je n’ai plus passé d’examen (la dernière fois c’était il y 4 ans…) ; bref, si vous êtes stressé, ne vous inquiétez pas, le test est très accessible (bien qu’il coûte 85£ à l’inscription…). Le but est de s’assurer que vous êtes capable d’écrire correctement français et que vous avez une connaissance basique de la langue (donc si vous êtes natif et que vous avez lu plus de 5 livres dans votre vie ça devrait aller !)

J’étais assez nerveux avant le test mais aussi après, car vous devez attendre 2 mois pour les résultats. J’ai passé le test dans l’Alliance Française de Londres et ils ont besoin d’envoyer toutes les copies à Paris.

Le test est divisé en 2 parties. La première est une correction orthographique où il vous est demandé de corriger une lettre écrite par une personne en français. Vous avez 30 minutes pour l’épreuve. Le barème est sur 20. Repérage d’une forme incorrecte + 0.5 pts, correction d’une forme incorrecte + 0.5 pts, repérage d’une forme correcte - 0.5 pts, correction d’une forme correcte - 0.5pts, donc si vous faites le calcul il y a 20 erreurs à trouver et à corriger. Pas d’inquiétude la plupart sont évidentes !

La seconde partie est la production du texte argumentatif, vous avez 2h15 pour produire une dissertation sur un article qui vous sera fourni. Il vous est demandé d’écrire entre 700 et 900 mots. Vous devez produire une structure dans votre argumentation, en présentant vos arguments et idées sur le sujet en illustrant d’exemples. Ecrire un texte argumentatif peut être effrayant, en particulier si vous comme moi n’avez pas disserté depuis l’université, mais si vous suivez le schéma classique (que l’on a tous appris) thèse, antithèse, synthèse, ça devrait marcher. Le sujet sera probablement en lien avec la place de l’éducation au sein de nos sociétés modernes, et vous devrez montrer que vous avez un parti pris. C’est ce que les correcteurs recherchent. Lorsque j’ai passé le reste, il s’agissait d’un article du Nouvel Obs. sur la suggestion de certains présidents d’université de rendre l’accès à la fac payante. Le principal argument étant que pour de nombreux étudiants, le choix de l’université est souvent un choix par dépit sans vraiment de réflexion sur le projet professionnel de l’étudiant et par conséquent, les universités se retrouvent avec un grand nombre d’étudiants en échec lors de leur première année après le Bac. Le barème de cette épreuve est également sur 20.

Pour conclure, pas d’inquiétude ! Lisez la presse française pour vous tenir informé sur la situation en France, en particulier en matière d’éducation. N’ayez pas peur de la longueur du texte argumentatif (entre 700 et 900 mots), car lorsque vous commencez à rédiger, vous vous apercevrez que les idées affluent et que vous avec beaucoup de choses à dire et à défendre. Vous atteindrez facilement le nombre de mots requis. Relisez-vous plusieurs fois, corrigez toute votre grammaire et assurez-vous qu’il n’y aucune faute d’orthographe, ou de syntaxe.

Après avoir reçu vos résultats, vous serez en mesure de prendre contact avec le CNED et vous inscrire pour la formation (mais comme vous devez probablement le savoir, c’est assez coûteux, 1400 €)

I quit my corporate job, new beginning! / J’ai quitté mon boulot corporate,nouvelle vie!

Hi there, not sure what I am doing here, but I do feel that what is currently happening in my life might be worth reading for at least one person on this planet so here it is (I really hope that person is going to read it).

Alright so quick introduction; I am Yves, a 28 years old French guy currently living in London but moving to Spain in 2 months (that’s important for the rest of the post). Here is my “no one cares” story.

On March 3rd 2016 it was my birthday, but on that day I experienced what we now commonly called a “Burn Out”. I know that’s nothing crazy or out of this world given the number of people that are going through this. But on March 7th, 2016, the next Monday, I went to my manager and said “I am giving you my resignation”. To provide more context, I was working in the city of London as a management consultant who wears a suit, and use expressions such as “data-guru”, “off the grid” and “game changer”. My manager asked me if I could stay the 3 months of my notice period and I did. I left the company on June 7th 2016 after working 4 years in that industry.

Now you’re probably wondering 2 things: what the hell has he been doing since June 7th and also, “what is the point of your post man?!”

The answer to the first question is that I was watching the Euro 2016 and as a French person, I was quite into it until the 10th of July (11:33pm Central Eastern Time more precisely). Now, however, I am free as a bird to focus on other things amongst which is - drum roll - taking a massive turn in my career and become a French teacher as a foreign language.

See while I was powering through my notice period, a plan started to grow in my mind and I thought what would be a cool job that I could do anywhere around the world using my skills? I listed all my skills, (it took 5 seconds) and I ended up with speaking French and English fluently.

So I went online, looked it up, and found an online class, though the CNED (Centre National d'Enseignement à Distance) and a diploma called the DAEFLE (Diplôme d’Aptitude à l’Enseignement du Français Langue Etrangère) delivered by the Alliance Française. 480 hours over 10 months. Let’s do it! I signed up and soon after received my first material. Hopefully I will be fully qualified to teach French as a foreign language in April 2017. Along the way, I will describe the training, the difficulties, the content, and anything else I think of as relevant for anyone out there.

Alright, now the other good part of quitting my job and finding an online class is that I am actually moving to Barcelona where I will enjoy myself and learn Spanish. I will tackle Spanish learning, moving to Barcelona, working online and trying to find a way to make money in the following posts. Stay tuned!

Now the post in French!

Hello, je ne suis pas certain de savoir ce que je fais ici, m’enfin je pense que ce qui m’arrive en ce moment peut potentiellement intéresser au moins une personne sur cette planète donc allons-y ! (J’espère vraiment que cette personne lira ce post.)

Donc, rapide introduction, Je m’appelle Yves, j’ai 28 ans et je vis actuellement à Londres mais déménageant bientôt en Espagne dans 2 mois (Ce détail a de l’importance pour la suite de ce post) Voici donc mon histoire (dont probablement un paquet de monde se fout)

Le 3 Mars 2016 était le jour de mon anniversaire, mais à cette date, j’ai vécu ce que l’on appelle communément un “Burn Out”. J’ai conscience que cela n’a rien de nouveau ni de surprenant étant donné le nombre de personne à qui cette expérience arrive. Mais le 7 Mars 2016, le lundi suivant, j’ai eu une discussion avec mon manager et lui ai dit « Je te donne ma démission ». Afin de donner plus de contexte, je travaillais dans la city de Londres en tant que consultant en management, portant un costard bien taillé et cravate et utilisant des anglicismes à tour de bras tels que « data-guru », « off the grid » and « game changer ». Mon manager m’a alors demandé de rester les 3 mois de ma période de préavis et j’ai accepté. J’ai quitté l’entreprise le 7 Juin 2016 après avoir travaillé 4 ans dans cette industrie.

Maintenant, vous vous posez probablement 2 questions : Qu’a-t-il foutu depuis le 7 Juin mais aussi « qu’est-ce que tu veux de nous raconter mec ?! »

La réponse à la première question est la suivante, j’étais en train de regarder l’Euro 2016 de football est en tant que français, j’étais assez passionné par l’évènement jusqu’à ce soir du 10 Juillet 22:33 CET. Désormais, je suis libre comme l’air de pouvoir me concentrer sur d’autres choses, et parmi celles-ci - Roulement de tambour – prendre un virage dans ma carrière et devenir professeur de français en tant que langue étrangère.

Voyez-vous pendant que je subissais mes 3 derniers mois de travail, un diffèrent projet a commencer a germer dans mon esprit et je me suis dit quel pourrait être un job cool qui me permettrait de travailler n’importe où dans le monde en utilisant mes compétences ? J’ai donc listé toutes mes compétences (ça m’a pris 5 secondes) et j’en suis arrivé à la conclusion suivante. Tu parles Français et Anglais couramment.

J’ai donc été en ligne, effectué quelques recherches et trouvé une formation en ligne avec le CNED (Centre National d'Enseignement à Distance) et un diplôme à la clé, le DAEFLE (Diplôme d’Aptitude à l’Enseignement du Français Langue Etrangère) délivré par l’Alliance Française. 480 heures de cours sur 10 mois, c’est parti ! Je me suis inscrit et quelques temps après j’ai reçu les premiers documents d’étude. En espérant qu’en Avril 2017 je serai qualifié pour enseigner le français en tant que langue étrangère. Le but de ce Tumblr sera de vous décrire les différentes étapes de cette formation, les difficultés, le contenu ainsi que tous les aspects qui pourraient être utiles.

Voilà, maintenant l’autre bon côté de quitter son boulot corporate et trouver une formation en ligne est que je déménage à Barcelone, où je vais profiter d’une meilleure qualité de vie et apprendre l’espagnol. Je parlerai plus longuement de l’apprentissage de l’espagnol, du déménagement à Barcelone, de la démarche de quitter son boulot et de trouver un moyen de faire de l’argent etc. dans les posts suivants.
