one of the most heartbreaking comparisons in the show is how pierre’s “did i look up and see the moon and the stars in the sky? oh why have i been sleeping?” vs natasha’s “oh, the moon! this winter sky, how can anyone sleep?” are parallel. natasha can’t sleep because she’s in love, and the moon and stars in the sky remind her of her lover. pierre, however, is asleep because he’s not in love, and is unable to wake up because he hasn’t taken the time to see the moon and stars in the sky, has no one to be reminded of. to natasha, the moon and stars remind her of how she can’t sleep because she’s in love. but for pierre, they remind him of how he can’t wake up because he’s not.

Great Comet is the brainchild of composer and lyricist Dave Malloy and director Rachel Chavkin. Having been in development since 2012, the show finally had its Broadway premiere in November 2016, with Josh Groban, Philipa Soo (Hamilton) and Denee Brenton in lead roles, marking Groban’s Great White Way Debut. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, critics praised this inventive and fresh take on the tale, with the New York Times calling it ‘vibrant, transporting new musical’.

not to be dramatic but the crescendo at the end of The Great Comet of 1812 when the music and the light of the comet intensifies until you can see pierre and everyone looking at it, then dimming back down until it’s just the one bulb is the singular most moving and exquisite experience i’ve ever had inside of a theatre
