I know everyone loves to talk about the bar scene after Bucky’s fall, because of Chris’s phenomenal acting, and how he actually looks like he’s been sobbing, not crying Man Tears™, but no one ever thinks about why he’s been crying that hard.

I mean, obviously because Bucky is his best friend in the world and losing someone like that is like losing a part of yourself, but no one ever talks about the fact that Steve never thought he’d outlive Bucky.

Think about it. Steve’s been sick forever, he’s long since accepted that he’s going to die long before Bucky ever does. And when he got the serum, all of a sudden he’s got this future he’s never expected, one where he gets to live past the age of thirty, one where maybe he and Bucky get to live out their years together. And he’s practically bulletproof now, he’s Captain America, he should be enough to bring them both home from the war. But he’s not. Bucky still falls and all of a sudden Steve is facing a life without him.

Because at the end of the day, Bucky would have prepared to eventually live without Steve - he’d have come to terms with it, made his peace - but Steve never, not in a million years, expects to have to live without Bucky. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what destroyed him.
