Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820) was one of the first American feminists. Her 1790 essay “On the Equality of the Sexes” was a landmark text in the movement for women’s rights, as it proposed the spiritual and intellectual equality of men and women, criticising the inherent patriarchal beliefs of society and deploring the lack of better female education.
She began her literary career with a book of essays on multiple subjects of interest in society, published under a male pseudonym so that readers would not dismiss her work on account of gender bias. In 1802 she helped found a female academy in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A member of the Universalist church, her influence is said to be the reason why women were always able to hold leadership positions within this institution.

“I’ve had people put me down because I didn’t look like them — I look stronger. I’ve had people look past me because of the color of my skin. I’ve had people overlook me because I was a woman. I had critics say I will never win another Grand Slam when I was only at #7 and now here I stand today with 21 Grand Slam titles and I’m still going.”
