Loving my new off duty #aloyoga hat that my angel @xyience17 got me from @aloyoga @aloyogastores 🖤 Maitri, Loving-Kindness Inspired by you, this week’s Yogi Assignment is Loving-Kindness. Sometimes referred to as Maitri in Sanskrit, an attitude of kindness goes a long way to make your world a more peaceful place. As yogis we learn to cultivate a kind and loving approach to ourselves through the practice. So many students begin yoga with the same midnset of goal orientation, self-judgment and over-achievement that happens off the mat. The practice slowly shifts your heart to love and forgiveness. Then instead of beating yourself up about all the poses you can’t do you learn how to celebrate the beauty of the journey without any attachment to what the end will be. Yoga feels a lot like freedom because the practice teaches you how to let go of all the self-limiting thoughts that all too often rumble around in our heads. I think you can work any job or have any career you want as long as it is lined up with your core values and a pure motivation. I believe you can be successful when you know what YOUR PURPOSE is. Why were you created to be here and how can YOU make a difference? Begin to ask yourself, what am I good at and how can I help others? Don't worry about fear but instead have courage. Day 21!!! Take a sweet break with @kinoyoga and Myself and enjoy this vegan recipe for the #30dayyogaliving Vegan Strawberry Shortcake 🍓 Musician, vegan and animal activist Moby is a real foodie - so much so that he opened his own vegan restaurant in California, with all profits going to animal protection causes. His chosen dessert - or at least one of the many he loves - is a strawberry shortcake. Ingredients For the shortcakes: 200g dairy-free margarine 1 tsp vanilla essence 100g caster sugar 300g plain our, sifted For the cream: 1 x 400ml can of full fat coconut milk, refrigerated overnight 75g icing sugar 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract And don’t forget... 16 strawberries Ingredients For the shortcakes: 200g dairy-free margarine 1 tsp vanilla essence 100g caster sugar 300g plain our, sifted For the cream: 1 x 400ml can of full fat coconut milk, refrigerated overnight 75g icing sugar 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract And don’t forget... 16 strawberries Method 1. In a bowl, cream together the margarine, vanilla essence and sugar. Stir in the our and mix into a dough. Wrap the dough in cling lm and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Heat the oven to 160 °C and line a baking tray with parchment paper. 3. Roll out the chilled dough to about a 1⁄2 cm thickness and, using a cookie cutter, cut into rounds. Place them on the baking sheet, sprinkle with a little extra sugar and bake for 12-15 minutes. 4. Leave to cool for at least 10 minutes. 5. To make the coconut cream, chill a large mixing bowl for 10 minutes, then take the chilled, hardened coconut milk from the fridge and scrape out the thickened cream, leaving behind the liquid. 6. Beat for 30 seconds until creamy, then add the icing sugar and vanilla extract. 7. Slice fresh strawberries and cover one shortcake with them. Cover in cream, and add another shortcake to the top. Karma means action or activity that produces a result and leaves behind an energetic impression inside our heart-mind. Karma can originate from us as a thought, word, or deed, or it can be something we perceive with our senses, such as a movie we watch or song that we hear. Every karma has consequences, which may occur sooner or later and may be obvious “or subtle. Karma is recorded in our memory and, it is said, in the memory bank of the universe. On a cosmic level, Isaac Newton’s third law of motion states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The cause of an action contains its effects in subtle form. The universe is a continuous dance of energy. If we want to contribute the energy of kindness and compassion to the universe, we must act that way. Positive energy begets positive energy, and vice versa. For example, have you noticed how you feel around someone who is kind, generous, and happy? Does it make you feel more that way? On the other hand, when you are in the company of a negative, mean, pessimistic person, how do you feel? BARBARA KINGSOLVER” “The clarity of our heart-mind determines how accurately an experience is stored in our memory. Whatever we think we saw or heard is what gets stored in our memory. Correct perception (pramāṇa) means the stored memories are truthful, while misperception (viparyaya) leads to untruthful memories. Clarification and purification of our heart-mind (citta-prasādana) is essential for seeing the world as it actually is. The process of yoga includes the gradual replacement of harmful or negative memories with helpful or positive ones. Whatever receives attention will strengthen, and whatever we pay no attention to will weaken. It is our heart-mind field that accepts sensory input from outside, processes it, integrates it into ourselves, and remembers, ruminates, and directs the delivery of thoughts, words, and actions. The heart-“mind stores our experiences, including emotions, in memory, and over time uses this information to construct an identity that defines who we think we are. Citta is our heart-mind, our outer and inner psyche, and the primary place of interest in the Yoga Sūtras. Our heart-mind sits between the ever-changing outside world and an inner light of awareness. This inner light never changes, and it represents pure, unconditional love. If you’re stressing out about the small details and worrying about how everything is going to work out you may miss the simple beauty that surrounds you. If you’re able to shift your mind to ease and flow, then you’ll walk through even the most difficult moments of your life with grace. Take the lesson of Sukha into the hardest poses of your practice. Ask yourself how you can find a space of peace even amidst great challenge. Whether that means accepting that your hips aren’t open yet and learning to love them anyway, or it means softening your practice instead of pushing too hard, move yourself into ease and flow. Self-soothing is a skill that is often hard to learn. When life feels overwhelming you need tools to calm your nervous system. Whether it’s getting a massage, sprinkling a bit of lavender oil, going for a walk, practicing yoga or spending time in prayer, finding moments of ease and flow in your life gives you an emotional safe space to heal. When you work out together, you create a context in which you can coordinate your actions. It will go on its own way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the cracks, the crevices. Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you. SHENG YEN MAKING PROGRESS IN ANY ENDEAVOR requires time, effort, and focus. World-class athletes develop their prowess after many years of continuous practice. What we learn from teachers and books is important, yet secondary to the knowledge we acquire through direct experience. That which cannot be described in words and can only be alluded to, the knowledge of our inner Self (puruṣa), absolutely requires turning our attention inward on a regular basis. Abhyāsa is a disciplined, persistent effort to remain focused. This focus can occur during physical exercise (such as āsana), breath work (prāṇāyāma), meditation (saṁyama), or even the act of learning a musical instrument or driving a car. The sūtra-s state that abhyāsa is the effort required to maintain a focus, and it is to be done continuously over a long period of time, with sincerity and care. Abhyāsa involves a committed effort to maintain your chosen practice long enough to reap its rewards. Possessions flow in and out of our lives, people around us come and go, our opinions and even what we think is true changes over time. Our outer form is in flux around a deeper and permanent light of awareness (puruṣa). Complete satisfaction and contentment can be experienced when our heart-mind field of consciousness (citta) rests quietly in this awareness. Santoṣa, which is the second of the five niyama-s, is being grateful for what we have and content with who we are and where we are in life. According to the sūtra-s, when santoṣa is present, unexcelled happiness pervades our being. This feeling of contentment is not the same as what we feel when we have everything we ever wanted in life in terms of possessions, a partner, and an ideal job. Those things can all change.
