this is going to sound unbearable but i wish fandom read like, literary criticism. because what’s even more unbearable is the iwtv fandom “which one is the woman” wars and i feel like if we could talk about masculinity and femininity, paternity and maternity, on narrative and thematic levels rather than insisting on making ontological truth claims about the identity of fictional characters things would go a lot better.
when dracula scholars say “jonathan harker is feminized narratively in the first half of the novel, because he is confined in a remote castle and menaced by a sinister man” they are not claiming he’s a woman. i would also support that argument if someone wanted to make it because i also love trans headcanons, but it’s a separate argument. media criticism is not concerned with establishing an objective “identity.” so they are also not precluding the masculine role jonathan takes in the text later, as a member of the avenging brotherhood who heroically vanquishes a foreign threat through manful anglo fortitude. (see what i did there? dracula can both be the abusive man who undoes a hero through charismatic violence in his patriarchal domain and the effeminate orientalized threat to british civilization, with neither read undoing the other).
similarly, lestat can be associated with the maternal, in being the one to change claudia, the way he is jealous of her supposed thieving of lestat’s husband’s affections, or how he bitterly resents her in part because of a perceived similarity to him, his own past as his mother’s externalized male self (with she as his female self) etc - and he can act as brutal father attempting to dominate his husband and daughter along the patriarchal lines of control of knowledge and freedom of movement. unless you think gender is a binary so rigid you can’t even try on different lenses on a fictional text for the rewarding purpose of media analysis, why on earth is this a battle being fought?

if you’re white and wanna write a poc character and feel awkward about it i implore you to ignore any twitblr stuff treating it as a massive ethical burden and instead come in more with the same mindset you’d have if you wanted to write about idk firefighters but didn’t know anything about firefighters so you do... research. Like fuck off with the weird kinda creepy calls for spiritual introspection you’re not writing about god damn space aliens you’re writing about humans and if you think you need more perspective of different life experiences just read?
