Questions with Niall Horan

Niall Horan has become famous in the music industry, for his part in the band One Direction and now with an ultra-successful solo career. But he also has a passion for golf, both from a playing perspective and with a golf management company.

As he visited the Augusta National Golf Club this weekend in advance of the Masters, the 31-year-old Irishman sat down for an “Under the Umbrellas” conversation. He also answered six quick questions about his golf and Masters experience.

When And How Did You Fall In Love With Golf?

“When I was very young. Watching Tiger win here multiple times was a big help, Sunday red here at Augusta with those big roars through the TV. Being from Ireland was a big help with some great players with (Paul) McGinley and (Padraig) Harrington. Once you’re in, you’re in.”

Favorite Place Or Hole At Augusta National?

“You can’t be really beat 11 green and 12 tee box. Being at 18 at the end of a long day here is like nothing else, too.”

Favorite Food At The Masters?

“It used to be all the sandwiches. But I had a couple of those Georgia Peach Ice Cream sandwiches last year. Oh man. On a hot day like this, when it’s 80-plus, you can’t beat that.”

What Song Is In Your Head At Augusta National?

“Georgia on My Mind. (Breaks out into song) Georr-gia, Georr-gia. I haven’t performed that in concert or recorded it, but a good friend of mine, Michael Bublé, has it on a record. I love that song so much. I’ve sung it in private with him. So, you never know.”

Favorite Moment Playing Augusta National?

“I have fortunately played this course on multiple occasions. I have birdied 13 a couple of times, which is exactly what you want to do when you’re down there. When I’m here I don’t really care how I play, but just happy to walk around and take in the history. I always say do you remember when Bubba (Watson) hit that shot from the trees on 10 or Phil (Mickelson) hit that crazy shot from the trees on 13. That never gets old.

“But there was a moment that was unreal one day. We were coming up No. 8. Me and a friend of mine had hit the second shot left into the trees there. As we were looking and waiting for a group on No. 2 to walk by, we realized it was Jack (Nicklaus). And he was wearing a yellow shirt. And he was walking down the hill. That was just an amazing moment. The Bear himself.”

You And (Former One Direction Bandmate) Harry Styles In A Golf Match. Who Wins?

“I haven’t played golf with him in a long time. I’m trying to get him out. I hear he’s gotten much better than the last time we played. Apparently, he’s closer. We would have a great time.”
