For this post I do not have anything new that has happened on the soap opera “ Vino el Amor” but I just want to make this post more like general and a sum up of everything I have seen throughout the soap opera. So, I have observed how just like in real life race and gender plays such big roles in TV shows and I think they are both positive and negative. I think it is a good thing that they do this type of TV. Shows because it educates us and it makes us think more and what we should not do or what is wrong or right. But, there is also the negative because some people learn and take it a different way they think that this type of TV shows are teaching us that we should be like that. For example, some people think that it is okay to treat women as less of a person because of their gender because the TV shows do it, but on the other hand we have men who say no that looks bad the way that guy treats that women and they learn from it. So, like I said it is a good thing but like everything it has their ups and downs. Also, it is a good way to show how someone’s races plays a big role on how people from other races like me who I am Mexican get an unequal opportunity and more. I think many people don’t believe or realize the inequality that exist with people that are not “white” and how privilege they are in this country. Instead of using their privileges to help others some of them use them to affect other people and not help them. It is even harder when you are from another race and on top of that if you are women because then you are very limited. Overall, I enjoyed doing this post because it helped understand the class better.

For this week, I will be talking about how women have more access to things depending on their economic status and how not everything is equal for everyone. I noticed how Luciana, who is Mexican has so many less opportunities in different ways than Graciela who is white and a United States Citizen. So, Graciela is able to go anywhere she wishes without being judged. For example, this week they had to go to this rich restaurant and Luciana was bullied and not treated well because she was not dressed up like other people who go to this restaurant. People who went to this restaurant had good expensive clothes and she just had her best clothes. However, I believe that clothes should not categorize people because clothes are just pieces of clothes you wear and does not mean anything. But many people think, like Graciela, that clothes are everything and clothes gives her the right to make other people feel less and poor. Also, the physical characters like the skin color she thinks is very important. Graciela has a whiter skin than Luciana and then for feels like she has more privileges than her and that she can do whatever she wishes but not her. For example, Graciela is always threatening her about if she goes out in public that she might get picked up by the police and sent back to Mexico because her skin color is obvious and shows that she is undocumented. So, we can see that people judge other people by many aspects like skin color and something as small as a piece of cloth. This just bothers me a lot because I have been judged too by my skin color and I have been treated different that other white people in some public places like restaurants, this to me is so unfair.

For this week, I will analyze how a single mother goes through a lot of negative comments just for being a single mother. In the soap opera, “Vino el amor” one of the women got pregnant of a married man. She is promise everything by this man. He promises her to leave his wife, and get her a house for them, and to eventually have a family with her. Of course, this woman is a poor woman and believes everything this guy tells her and believes in him. She ends up pregnant and when she goes to tell him that she is now pregnant and the child is his he tells her that she is a dummy for believing that he would really live his family when he already has children. So, she ends up thinking about the possibility of either having an abortion or having that baby, but then give in in adoption because she is not financially capable of taking care of her baby. So, the other women in the vineyard find out about her being pregnant and they start giving her names. She is called a whoer, easy women who opens her leg to anyone. She is specially  an idiot women for believing that a rich man would live her family to be with her and that she did not even liked the man that the only thing she wanted was his money that’s why she got pregnant and that now that did not work out for her. So, she is judged in so many ways and she finally decides to have the baby and she falls in love with him and so decides to keep him. She works hard to give him a decent life. One day she is out shopping and the baby’s father sees them and wants to hold him. The mother tells him that he has no right to hold him because he denied him from the beginning and that he even told her abort the baby. So the father is like I will sue you and the law will give me the baby because I am not poor like you and I can give him a better life. So this week I will find out what will happen but the point I want to make is that the women gets judged so bad and then out of nowhere the father wants to take away the baby from his mother and he thinks he can do whatever he wants just because he is rich.

For this post, I want to focus on how women are viewed when they apply for welfare. So, Luciana’s mother lived in the United States with her son for a couple of years because like I said before Luciana and his father was deported. Therefor she raised her son as a single mother and like we know life in Mexico is hard so she would sometimes send money to her husband and Luciana for her education. So, she got advised by another person to go ask for food stamps, but when she did she would get told that she did not needed it because she actually had nice clothes and so did her son. They immediately went to look at how they were dressed up and did not think about how they were leaving and the life they were living because of her husband and daughter were reported back to Mexico.  So, what made me mad is how just because they had some good clothes they immediately told them they did not needed it. It is just like how Kevin Powell said that poor people are not supposed to have nice stuff because otherwise the government can leave you out of welfare. However, I believe that the way you dress up always counts a lot in many countries because it is the same in México. In México, if you wear good clothes, they consider you a rich person. However, that is not the case all the time because some poor people have good clothes, but only because they have relatives in the United States, and so they send them clothes. So, these people receive good clothes but eat poorly or sometimes don’t even have what to eat. Their living conditions are not as good as the clothes that they wear either. So, my point is, clothes do not matter because it does not say anything about you.

men are not better than women
For this week, I analyzed how women are seen as less capable in jobs. For this week specifically, because there was a wine competition, and the owner of the vineyard had other family problems so solve and was not able supervise the wine they were going to present, Luciana got in charge of doing it. However, many people specially males were criticizing and at even mad because they said they were going to lose the competition because a woman can never do the same job as a man. David, owner of the vineyard, still believed in her and said that she would be able to do the job just as perfect as if he was to do it himself. So, throughout the process of doing the wine people try to distract her on her job so that she can do something wrong and that way a male can her job position or responsibility as of now. However, she is really focused and no one is able to distract her. The day of the competition arrives and they go to present the wine and the best of all is that she gets the first place and so the males are very surprised and say that it was just her lucky day. David is very happy with the job she has done and even tells her that she will get a better wage and so many people are really mad at Luciana now. I just want to show with this post, how we as females can also do the same job as a male and sometimes we can even do it better. No one should judge a person based on their gender because males are not any better than females. This post and this episode on Vino el amor proof it that gender does not matter.

For this post, I have decided to analyze how women are also judged based on their economic status. Marta comes from a low economic status family and her family live off what she and Luciana and her brother make working at the vineyard. So, she, Marta, is always related as a whore and slut and more. Many of the people in this soap opera say she is a slut because she is poor and when she does not have anything to eat she goes and finds someone to have sex with to get paid because that’s what poor people do. I totally do not agree with this because I know many poor people, including my family in Mexico, and they do not do not have sex to get paid, and so I just hate how they say things like this. Lilian is the one that is specially always getting on her and one time she even tries to blame her for robbery with the owner of the vineyard when it was her who robbed some jewelry. Lilian thought it would be easy to blame her and that she would be believed since she is poor and she has more necessity than her. The good thing is that the truth came out and the owner of the vineyard found out that it was not Marta. Although he knew from the beginning that it could not have been her because she has been working with him for so many years, and she has never done something like that. The picture above is a great representation of this situation because the poor are the hard-working people. This is so true in the real world because people tend to relate bad things with the poor economic people and not so much with the rich people.

This week nothing new happened for me to analyze in Vino el Amor, but I will take in general all the female actresses are skinny but not males. I hate to see how in most of the movies, soap operas are always so skinny like models. Why don’t they also make chubby or not model type body also be on movie? I have watched many soap operas and it is always skinny people on them. There was one where the main protagonist female was chubby and so she would get discriminated by other females instead of helping her lose weight or something like that. The picture above is a picture of the protagonist that I am talking about and the show’s name is Llena de Amor. So, we see discrimination even on physical traits and we see how the media teaches or tries to show us that the perfect body is a skinny like model body. However, not only females discriminate her, but also males who think that for girls to be loved by a man they should be skinny. She even gets bullied by both males and females and gets a lot of name calling thought out the soap opera. I believe that women should be able to have whatever body they wish and should not be discriminated by no one and should always help each other and not the other way around.  It is even the same for most of the music videos where most of the models there are also so skinny. I believe that it would help a lot if the media helped with this topic. Media showed show females in all sizes and not just the skinny ones and when they do show chubby females there is always name calling, but not for the skinny people. Overall, this is what I have realized while watching different TV shows and music videos and more.

For this week, I will analyze how not only the protagonist is in competition with another female, but also the protagonist mom, Marta. Marta is in a similar competition as her daughter Lucia. She is on a competition for a man with Lilian, David’s ex mother in law. Marta is David’s children nanny and is very loved by them. On the other hand, Lilian is not liked as much as much as Marta, but she is a very jealous women. Lilian likes to always bother Marta and make her feel less just because she is Mexican and so she assumes she is an undocumented person and for that reason she sees her as less person. This relates back to the reading, Gay, we did when she talks about that one lady that was told that the purse was expensive, and so they assumed she was not going to be able to pay for it. So they are on a competition for a sheriff man who is legal. He used to hate undocumented people, but after he met Marta he changed his mind. However Lilian has money, so she supports the sheriff financially therefore, he decides to stay with her and not with his love, Marta. Now Lilian feels like she is better just because she is not undocumented and is always getting on Marta about it. We can see how Lilian has the privilege to be born in the United States, but does not use that privilege to help others. Lilian uses her privilege to hurt other people. Another thing I see is how women hurt each other instead of supporting each other just because of their race and we sough that with the protagonist as well. Overall, this is just another relationship and the way they are shown, as competitive. What I am saying is that, racism exist everywhere no matter your class/status.
The picture above is Lilian and Marta.

This week nothing really happened in Vino el amor, but I did noticed how many females just don’t help each other out as we should.  Last week I talked about how David’s sister in law is competing with Luciana but this week I noticed many more females that do this. For example, David’s daughter found out that her father is dating Luciana and instead of respecting her because she is a female just like her what she does is insult her. I understand that she does not want a stepmother, but I believe there was no need to insult her and call her the B word and more insulting things. Not only does she does that, but she goes around telling other people that work at the vineyard how easy she is and that she is a whore. She also talks bad about her to his little brother who actually does like Luciana. So what I am saying is that we should respect each other because we are females and should not talk bad about other females. Another thing I noticed was how we see other females are less than other. For example David’s daughter talks about how Luciana is less than her and her family just because she is Mexican and she sees Luciana as a stupid women just because of her race. She does not realize she has the privilege to be a U.S citizen and not all people have that privilege and instead of helping other people because of the privilege she has, she uses it to harm other people. I guess she just takes that privilege granted and does not care about other people that is not he-self. What really gets me is how she is actually in love with a Mexican guy, but still criticizes Mexicans for being undocumented. Anyways, this is what happened this week and the picture above is David’s daughter. I will also live a link to a short clip about David’s daughter relationship with the mexican undocumented. It might be hard to understand since it is in spanish, but ill leave it if you all still want to just watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf1R4ZfcDD0

For this week I analyzed what is happening with Luciana’s relationship with David (owner of the vineyard). So, Luciana and David have been together, but they decided to keep it a secret since basically they already know no one will approve this relationship. However, I need to mention that David is a widow man and has two kids. He has a daughter and a son and only the son likes Luciana. So, Friday they had a big party for his daughters 18th birthday. So David’s ex mother-in-law and sister-in-law are beginning to notice that they are becoming really close. I also need to mention that David’s ex sister-in law is in love with him and she is the one who killed her sister (David’s wife). So her plan is to make the kids not love her, and basically put them on her contrary side, so that way she at least has that advantage since the children are David’s priority. So this week I came to the conclusion with this that women are portrayed as rivals and are always competing against each other. We can see how they don’t do what we read on Full Frontal Feminism (Valenti) says which is to help each other out and not compete against each other. Women are suppose to support each other and be respectful and all that, but we see that does not happen most of the times. As we see David’s ex sister-in-law is willing to do anything so that David will like her instead and she even killed her sister at the first place for the same reason because she has always loved him. So she did not care that it was her family she still killed her and once again we see how they compete and portray women as mean, evil, people who fight for men no matter what. In the picture above we see the couple that is David and Luciana and his ex sister-in-law in the back. We see she has a lot of hate towards them. So, I hope this picture helps you understand better the situation.  So this is what happened this week.

Advocacy project update
Tumblr media
For this project, I will be analyzing how women are presented in “Vino el amor” , a soap opera, women are presented as far as job positions, leadership positions and more. This soap opera has many themes like wine and love and more. So far it has been about how to keep a grape vineyard successful and of course many people falling in love. At the same time we can observe how women are portrayed because some of the play a bigger role than others. But for this week, I will talk about how the main character, Luciana, is portrayed this week.  So she is the main character but she is represented as week because even though she studied agriculture she does not have a very important position. She is just a worker like many others and the supervisors and leaders are men. She has worked so hard and has done many things so that the grape vineyard will always be successful, but still she is just an employee like the others. She is also kind of seen as a week women because she is an immigrant, and so there are other man who think she should not get a better job position because she is an immigrant.  She was deported out of the USA when she was young, but she came back with a visa years later, and she is still seen as an immigrant.  She is also portrayed as a really pretty woman and skinny who has two men fighting for her, which are the owner of the vineyard and the supervisor. At first she becomes the supervisors girlfriend but breaks up to be with the owner. Here, she is portrayed as a woman who cares more about hierarchy because she prefers the owner.  Overall, this is how she has been portrayed for the last couple of weeks.

Advocate
1)   What would you like to advocate for?
I would like to advocate for fair right no matter what color people are. For example there should be no different treatment just because someone is white, black, or Mexican. I guess where I am going is that I want to advocate for equality no matter race. I would also like to advocate for equal rights for women. I would like equal treatment, job positions, leadership opportunities and more for women.
 2)   Why are you passionate about it?
The reason I am passionate about equality for all people no matter their race or skin color is because I am Mexican, and as a Mexican I have lived many inequality situations just because of my race. I have gone through many things and I do not get the same treatment as a white person does just because of my skin color. Even though I am a US citizen, I still don’t get the same respect because of my color and that is exactly what I want to advocate for because we all deserve the same things and skin color does not matter. I have even had experiences where I don’t get the same opportunities at jobs just because I am a female and on top of that Mexican and that should not matter. Overall, I am passionate about this things because I been in situations where this has affected me, and I don’t want other people to go through the same things I have. I want other people to understand we are all equal.
 3)   Have you even been involved in activism? If so, how? If not, why?
No, I have never been involved in activism just because I do not know many people that are involved in something that interests me. Although, I would certainly get involved if I was asked to and it was something I wanted to support.

respond to three activist
The first activist page that I looked at is trying to grab other people attention to watch a video. This activist is making a call to all the people who are worried about how our lives will change with the new president and so its asking people to join and watch the video. The greatest strengths is that he/she has reposted the same post a couple of times and it has posted blogs where it says to reblog the post that it might help other people. Its weakness is that it does not give more info about the video she/he is asking to watch. My reaction is that it grabbed my attention and it even made me wonder what the video might be about and it has made me think about how my life will be after the new president. The reason it has me reacting like this is because of my race.
Another activist that I found is similar because it is about the same topic about the new president that we are going to have tomorrow. This is a call to people to call their senator to oppose the nominees. The strengths of this is that it enforces many times what they want the people to do which in this case is to call the senator. In even includes a picture that helps them get their point across and it list three steps on what people should do. The greatest weakness is that it tells readers to be up to date but does not tell them how they can do this. My reaction is that it graves ones attention especially because of the pictures and it makes me thing about.
The last activist that caught my attention is about education. This activist is more like a feminist activist. This activist is trying to make a change about affordable college and trying to grab other people attention by having many quotes that inspire other people. The quotes are actually their strength. It also has pictures of the activists and I see that they are from different race. They even upload pictures of their schedule events. Its weakness is that it needs more info about what they really want to change because I see that they mostly have quotes. I am reacting the way I am because the quotes are inspiring and make you think a lot. The activist pages that I looked at have had a positive impact on me because they grabbed my attention and where informative about what they are doing. I also liked how some of them had pictures that went a long with that they are doing.
