basically petey is the frame of reference for all of innie mark's behaviour and gemma is the frame of reference for all of outie mark's behaviour. both version of his self have dead wives haunting the narrative that either propel him to action or depress him into inaction. in both cases he is repressing his grief but at the same time that grief is what's fuelling his curiosity & rebelliousness. and they cross over as well: outie mark meets petey and finally begins to look into how his innie is treated and WHAT lumon is up to, and innie mark finds out ms casey is his outie's wife and is committed to getting her out of the severed floor. mark's relationship with himself is definitely unbalanced but his innie and outie have so much in common that they don't even realise. they're both driven by love!!! innie mark has one advantage that outie mark doesn't have which is HELLY. and helly says "im not your petey," directly drawing attention to the fact that mark's need for companionship is a hole left by petey, and helly is the one that wakes him up to literal revolution, in a way that outie mark doesn't even come close to UNTIL. he is sure that gemma might be alive. isn't that crazy. he really is a character defined by love because forgive me for quoting that stupid marvel show but literally what is grief if not love persevering!!!

the fact that we know mark and petey had inside jokes and teased each other and had such an easy and fun relationship that made work worthwhile for both of them and petey noticed mark looking visibly worn down and upset every time he came to work and they made a joke out of THAT as well and petey saying "you carry the pain with you you just don't know what it is" and that + milchick saying "you guys were one of my favourite office friendships" + irving saying "don't be sad. I know you and petey were close, he was the only one who appreciated your humour" + mark telling helly he threatened to kill the voice that asked him questions when he woke up and when she asks what happened he said "that voice turned out to be called petey, and he became my best friend" + mark actively repressing and avoiding any mention of petey even though it's affecting him in such an obvious way. all of those being the only context we're given of their relationship but in petey's reintegration flashbacks we see mark being silly and lighthearted in a way we only see like 20% of in the rest of the show it's so FUCKED UP. mark got severed to forget about his dead wife and all he got was TWO dead wives!!!
