In most cases, a Marxist-Leninist. The term is referring to the Hungarian uprising or fascist terror that was subsequently cracked down by Nikita Khruschev, because of reactionary elements that was enabled by the Nagy regime in attempt to establish a multi-party system with reactionary partiers, such as the FKgP. Tankie refers to Khruschev sending in tanks to suppress the fascist uprising. Ironically enough, MLs do not like Nikita Khruschev, because he was a revisionist. The term was later adopted by British revisionists to criticize MLs who were supportive of the CPSU.

The term is also used for MLs who attempt to deconstruct western narratives, propaganda and myths of former socialist countries or AES countries. The term is also referred to any leftist who are anti-western, anti-imperialist, anti-nato, critically supportive of anti-western governments or anything perceived as being "authoritarian" and etc. The term does not always refer to MLs, but can even extend to other Leftists due to some overlapping ideologies.
