I’m reading a paper that uses the term re-transition as opposed to detransition and it crystallised a lot of my problems with the term. detransition implies an ability to return to the “default” “normal” cisgender body that lurks within all of us, just waiting to be re-excavated after a period of intentional (deceitful) burial, and a turning “back” or away from the freakish mutilation and “deviance” of transgender transition to a more natural, more authentic body - a body that can never be transformed, only temporarily cloaked by medicine and social trickery on the part of trans people

the idea that detransitioning means you were a fake trans person/lying is such a bad and unnuanced one

i know so many people who went through a period of their life where they genuinely felt like a different gender, or where their gender presentation was changing and that made them think about their gender in new ways, or etc etc etc i can go on . and that doesn't mean that now, when some of them currently identify with the gender they were assigned at birth, that they were faking it or that phase of their life didn't mean anything

and it also REALLY REALLY doesn't mean that it discounts trans people, especially those who don't want to present in a binary gendered way, on the basis that it's a phase or they might change their mind later

gender identity and presentation is so fluid for so many people and there is a tendency (as with everything on the internet ig) to black-and-whiteify an issue that has had nuance for so so long

I really hate when there is a good post about positivity for trans men and trans women that address pressures each have to conform to a specific idea of things, appropriately reacting to struggles for gender roles and presentation and combatting internalized conflict…

And then the “nonbinary positivity” tacked on by a third poster is like “teehee we’re cryptids so we are immune to social pressures so we’re going to give you a sword, go forth and conquer the castle!” instead of recognizing a pressure to meet both or none of the expectations for trans men and trans women.

Posts like

Person 1: Trans men, it’s okay if your voices are high.

Person 2: Trans women, it’s okay if your voices are low!

Person 3: NB cuties it’s okay if you can’t cast 5th level spells on your first try :3

As if the presentation for nonbinary people is not both the pressure to conform to their agab from larger society AND within queer spaces a pressure to either conform to one binary gender OR be a thin waifish hairless elf who only uses they/them in a truly “”genderless”” fashion. Come on now
