Honestly, another thing I wished I saw more of when John does come up in Davekat fics, pertaining to Dave and his POV especially, is Dave being scared of not only disappointing Bro but also (and honestly maybe even more so) disappointing John?

Like I’ve read a lot of fic and I have NEVER seen anybody touch on Dave considering John’s reaction to him being not straight in any sort of detail besides his trouble with coming out? And even then that always gets redirected to Dave’s internalized homophobia and never touches on his relationship with John.

Which is crazy because John is one of the most important people in his life, his best bro, who pretty much had everything he wanted and is everything that Dave ever thought he needed to be. John got to grow up with a loving father that baked him cakes everyday and decorated their entire house in jesters just because he wanted to connect with his sons interests, John took to playing the game so easily that he completed all of his tasks and even set off the scratch, all while mostly goofing off (and did it without any “training” or “preparation” from some abusive guardian), John for the most part is comfortable with himself, John never comes across as having anything to prove, John is a hero. 

And instead of resenting John, Dave, Dave just wants to BE him. He just wants to be accepted by John, looks up to him and models himself after him. Allows this other 13 year old kid to have so much power over him that with, mere suggestion, John is able to stop Dave from downing his favorite drink of choice and totally unleashes all the suppressed discomfort Dave had towards the puppets. Like their role reversal is so hilarious because based off Dave’s persona you totally expect John to be the #2 following on Dave’s coattails but whoops, trapcard, you find out Dave is actually the submissive, avoidant, inept sidekick. 

Now with that context, also consider the fact that John and Dave played active roles in normalizing homophobia and reinforcing compulsory-heterosexuality with each other. Not in a malicious way, of course, but instead that sort of covert malignancy that we all catch just from being raised within gross cultural norms. Like of course these 2 regular bros make gay jokes, gay jokes are funny, pretending to be gay with your bro is funny, calling your bro out about doing gay stuff is funny. It’s that sort of “othering” vibe that carries implied superiority for not being the thing and not being in a position to be affected by/or pertained to with those jokes.

That’s why I think one of the first thoughts Dave had during his dawning sexuality crisis was “God, what would John think?” because the last thing he wants is to be othered from John. For him to be anything different than what John expected of him, because fuck he was already doing so much to get the guy to like him in the first place. Not to fucking mention, wow, now being straight (presumably from Dave’s perspective) is ANOTHER  thing John just effortlessly does that he can’t.

TBH this essay is mostly coming out of a place where I wish more Dave fics and general meta considered how his friendships with the other Betas affected him and his personality, because god that’s where some of the most interesting and telling characterization is. Dave’s whole persona is about these 3 other kids accepting him and liking him, while also distancing them enough so they can’t hurt him. He loves them all so fucking much and for anything to happen or for him to do anything that would make them another person in his life that hates or disapproves of him (Bro) is Dave Striders worst fucking nightmare.
