Did you like season 2 of HOTD? I am currently reading glbh and noticed that, in the parts which are compliant with the canon of TV show, your writing follows it very closely, down to the same scenes, lines, details and etc., which left me wondering, what is your opinion on the show.

Hi anon!!

Yes there are definitely parts of season 1&2 where I take from the show, while also tying in book canon (such as qoren and the Martells as well as nettles who will still very much be involved, and not whatever bs they have going on in the show rn lol), and my own canon since Shaera is involved. I try not to involve a ton of like scenes, cause then I’m just like rewriting the show lmao, but the scenes I do end up using, I’m not averse to saying I did. And they’re usually scenes i enjoyed a lot. To be honest, I quite enjoyed season 2 (more than season 1 I think tbh)! I have my gripes with certain parts, such as eliminating Alicent’s role in blood and cheese, so I kept that more book canon-inspired. But I think every adaptation comes with the cost of not being perfectly accurate to the book, especially one like F&B which has so many perspectives. So I try to keep to the scenes I enjoyed most in the show (such as Aemond embarrassing Aegon at the council, or Aegon firing Otto, or Aegon humiliating Aemond at the brothel, with some of my own writing obviously), while working them to fit the new canon of the dance of dragons.

And to be even more frank, I find it harder to include scenes from the show. Sometimes I’ll be like oh yeah loved that scene, how can I rework this, and then I’ll get to writing it and be like wait this doesn’t work with the GLBH canon (I messed up with Gwayne in one chapter lmao cause I totally forgot I included him at the Otto delivering terms to Rhaenyra such as he does in the book). And because I’ve rewatched the show so many times, I can get GLBH and HOTD mixed up lmao. So I try to take my time and be mindful of what I’ve written, what I’m adapting, and what I’m working with!

There truly is some great dialogue in the show, as well as characterizations I find enjoyable. The parts of the show I love, I wanna keep in GLBH, while scraping the stuff that just wouldn’t fit or I didn’t like. Especially dialogue. Some of it is so good.

But yeah! Thank you for such a question! No one’s really asked me that, so I enjoyed answering this! There will be a lot less show related stuff coming up and through the end of the fic to be very honest too. I am a bit nervous about season 3 and 4, and I wouldn’t even wait that long to finish the fic. I’m hoping to finish GLBH this year due to my health and just needing to finish it lol, as well as some other stuff in my life, so it’ll obviously be much much less show-compliant.

I do enjoy joking with friends who read GLBH and always say Ryan Condal reads it because of how I predicted some of the season 2 changes/choices. It gives me a laugh cause it’s silly.

hey mint! i'm a huge fan of your writing :) i wanted to ask something that i hope isn't an overstep about your writing process.

I'm trying to write my own fic for another fandom and i find myself looking to glbh and wondering how on god's green earth you manage to paint your scenes so vividly- you make it feel like i'm standing next to shaera in sunspear and can smell the ocean (god i hope that isn't weird). i'm really struggling to depict the environment the characters are in :(

do you have any advice on building scenes? how do you make it feel so real?

not an overstep at all!! It means so much that you would ask me! Like genuinely :)

Honestly, I think any of my creative writing professors or even my agent lol would moan and groan about how many adjectives I use. I just know if I ever turned in a chapter of glbh to any of them, I’d get back an entire chapter of red corrections LMAO.

But I think that’s why it works sometimes? Cause I know it’s over the top sometimes. I know I don’t need to always go so in depth with descriptions and I know it’s cringe sometimes (trust I’ve gotten DM’s about it lol) but I think that’s fun! Idk. I think the easiest thing is to just have fun with it. Go outside sometimes and just sit with nature for a second, or with another person (safely of course cause covid and h5n1, so mask up!), and just try to take in everything around you. I often use my grounding exercises for my OCD panic attacks, and try to think about multiple things which make up each of my senses. I also try to just read as many books as possible, especially in other languages. It just really widens your breadth of vocabulary! It’s not so like surgical as one may think, but I just try to envision everything as best I can and then transfer it to my notes app (I also write every chapter on my notes app on my phone so that I can write whenever and wherever!).

And then building a scene up, idk honestly. Rn with the show, it’s helpful with the breaks they do, but y’all know I’m not trying to rely on that too much. There are some scenes I’m obviously using cause they’re pertinent imo, but it’s honestly harder to write those ones. When I’m just working on scenes from my brain and outline, I kind of work sporadically. I’ll write one scene one day, and then write another scene that would be earlier in the chapter like a week later. I rearrange chapter povs all the time, trying to tweak it all so it flows well. But scenes really just need to feel right to you! Think of a setting that fits the plot. Build up that setting alone, because your characters can’t exist without their setting. Think about how your characters would then react. Then how would they react to one another, influenced by the immediate world surrounding them. Try to get some dialogue flowing—does it feel stilted or smooth? Try and say it aloud, see if you can imagine yourself saying those things. And just keep going with that scene until you feel it’s hitting a break point. Don’t pass that point. Don’t force the scene either. Go with what you feel is satisfying to you as the writer!

I will also say that rook’s rest will remain pretty canonical in how it plays out outcome wise. Where shaera and the other dragonrider play into that will soon be revealed in the chapter! But everyone also knows about the abduction of Persephone edit I did with shaera as Persephone soooo, hehehehe

i know you can't confirm cause spoilers but i'm rereading glbh and in one of the early chapters you mention baelor the blessed and how he's a descendant of rhae and daemon not shaera (aka the same as in book canon) so does that mean shaera won't be queen? or will she be queen but have no kids (at least legitimate since we know she currently has a bun in the oven 👀) so the crown goes to aegon iii?? or is this a red herring and her kid will be a girl and marry aegon instead of daenara velaryon and thus continue the bloodline??? (sorry for all the yapping i am just so invested in the story lol a fanfic hasn't gripped me like this in ages)

All I will say is that Baelor does indeed have his ancestry through Rhaenyra and Daemon because he’s the son of Aegon III, as you know. So that’s all I’m really saying with that. His ancestry will not change through Aegon III. Now what does that mean for Shaera and her… child…? That is a huge spoiler, but know she will have a child! How that child plays into the succession however will remain secret hehehe

to assuage your fears, glbh does have shaemond as endgame!! They are the main pairing and will end the story together! however I have warned everyone before and I’ll restate it just for posterity’s sake, the ending of glbh will be bittersweet. I don’t really consider it “happy” to be very honest besides some things, but that’s why it’s bittersweet! Some good some bad :)

I know that jaime already doesn’t like rhaegar because of cerseis not so subtle crush on him but I genuinely want to see how rhaegars and jaimes relationship will progress
