A Monday Feeling (Billy Hargrove x Reader)

It was any other Monday in Hawkins for me. School was finally out of session, but that didn’t mean work was. I knew it was early when there was no light struggling to get past the grime on my blinds. I could hear the drum of rain on the window pane as I bring my hand down in a semi-drunken stupor onto my alarm clock. I regret calling Tina over to hang out; with her not leaving until 4 in the morning. Not that the two of us had been drinking, which would have been something I wouldn’t think twice about, but at this time of day my neurons didn’t fire too well. So, truth be told it had pretty much the same effect as half a bottle of alcohol. I couldn’t stand breakfast though, knowing I was going to regret that by the time the sun came up, but making anything this early was just beyond the scope of my abilities right now. I grabbed my uniform that I placed neatly next to my bed and got dressed. The other me, the one that exists after ten in the morning, thought to just to throw my uniform on the floor, unplug my alarm clock, lock my bedroom door, jump back into bed, and hide away under the covers until that crack-of-dawn me could cope. But I knew that was out of the question knowing, Donna, my boss at Benny’s would have my ass if I showed up late…again.

Before the day had officially started, I stood in the hall, fully dressed and ready to go. I looked around the house, calling out for my mom, wondering if she’d left for work yet-which, come to find out she already did. Walking into my kitchen, glancing over to my left I saw our coffee pot which was still half full with caffeine. I wanted to resist it until I know the giver. But, without a conscious thought it is in my favorite mug. I wrapped my fingers around it, enjoying how warm it felt in my hands and throat as I took a sip. I felt relaxed, savoring both the drink and the moment. After only a few moments, I’m taken out of my trace when I hear a tremendous number of groans coming from the hall. Furrowing a brow, I peek my head around the corner to see a sleepy Dustin. His curly hair in disarray, voice groggy, eyes barely open as he stood hunched over.

“M’up.” Dustin mumbles, barely coherent. “Can you make me breakfast?”

I huffed as I made my way over to my younger brother, coffee still in my hand, as I gave him a particularly vicious jab to his belly-button. “Make it yourself.”

“Don’t wanna, too early.” He groans. I just giggled, ignoring Dustin’s half-hearted grumbling as he plopped down at our kitchen table. I wandered around picking up things to make the boy breakfast, knowing my culinary skills only extend to toast or cereal. So, that’s what Dustin was getting.

“Why are you up? It’s seven-thirty and last time I checked you don’t have school.”

“Steve’s first day working at the mall, (Y/N). I have to be there.” I furrowed a brow, “since when did Steve-wait, you have to be there?”

Dustin let out a frustrating sigh, slamming his hands down onto the table. “Son of a bitch, (Y/N)! Support… I need to be there as support!”

Throwing my hands up in defense, I breathed out a scoff, “Dusty, Steve’s a big boy, okay? I’m pretty sure he can handle his first day of work without you being glued to his hip all day.” Dustin rolled his eyes at my comment as I plonked the rather pathetic-looking breakfast down in front of him. He casted his eyes down between me and the food with a blank stare for a few seconds.

“Dry toast and cereal?” He murmured. I nodded, grabbing a spoon for him.

“Mhm, breakfast of champions.”

Dustin shook his head, “(Y/N), I can’t eat this crap. This isn’t breakfast, and when mom or Steve–”

I spun around, throwing up my index finger in his face as warning for him to shut it. “Dustin, I’m not mom and last time I checked, I don’t use Farrah Fawcett spray, okay? So, eat up because I have a bus to catch.” Handing the spoon to Dustin, he yanked it out of my hand, going in for the kill as I took one last gulp of coffee. Leaving the kitchen, I grabbed my house keys and purse that I had set on the counter making my way for the front door.

My hand reached the metal doorknob as Dustin spoke up again, “you should come hang out at the mall and see Steve later. I mean, at least try to on your lunch break.” I scrunch my face together, I knew exactly where this conversation was going. I sure as hell wasn’t born yesterday and I knew what the little shit was up to.

Up to no good.

Looking over my shoulder I watched as a smirk appeared on Dustin’s face as he flicked his brows up and down. “And why should I do that?” I sneered. He began to giggle before taking another bite of cereal, “because, (Y/N), it’s pretty obvious you like–”

“Dustin, don’t say it–just don’t even…I have work, so I’ll leave you to it, okay. love you, goodbye.”

It was about 4:30 in the afternoon and Benny’s was full. Quite unusual, especially after what happen two years ago. After what happen to Benny. Breaking out of my thoughts I stood at the counter, chin resting in my palm as I look around the Diner. An old couple eating side by side at the bar, sharing a strawberry milkshake, studiously bent over their meals. A group of girls I recognized from school sat in the back in a booth collapsing with helpless giggles, I noticed a few players from the varsity football team were also there. The noise level was high. The smoke level coming from the kitchen, too. But it didn’t bother me. I was used to it. I looked once more only to find Donna on the other side of the diner going over some checks.

I break out of my daze when she finally began to speak, “dear, you have a booth waiting.” Donna began. She peered up from what she’d been doing to press on, “was your plan to just stand there, gawk at me and look pretty?”

I shook my head.

“Go on then, booth 6.”

I look over only to see the same figure with that same damn smug look written all over his face as he sat in the same place-the one he always sat in.

Every. Damn. Day.

“Son. Of. A. bitch.” I sneered under my breath as I made my way other to the booth. Billy raised his brows and grinned like a school boy, “(Y/N) Henderson? Funny seeing you here, sweetheart.”

Rolling my eyes, I crossed my arms over my chest, “I work here, Douche canoe. And, how is seeing me here funny? You come to the diner where I work at and choose me as your waitress every time just to annoy and flirt with me.”

“Don’t get all wet, princess. What’s the harm in liking a pretty face?”

“Maybe because some Camaro crash helmet; mouth-breather like yourself, is the one taking interest.”

Billy leaned back in the booth, chuckling to himself. Putting a hand over his heart in mock hurt, wincing in pain as if my words actually offended him. To be fair, he looked rather impressed, “well, ouch, (Y/N). You kiss your daddy with that mouth, sweetheart?”

“Bite me.”

“Where?”

I rolled my eyes as he stretched his arms out, “oh you know you like it, Henderson. You’re blushing.”

“Ha-ha, yeah I don’t. And Billy, you know if I could I would make sure you’d lose a testicle but you know I can’t do anything in retribution or I’ll get fired.” I say shooting Billy a blank stare. He breathed out a chuckle, changing the subject.

“You know you should really smile more, your face is gonna get stuck like that if you don’t.”

Billy had two moods, just two. Today his dial was obviously set to “good.” That meant nothing can go wrong, everyone is lovely and only the most optimistic of forecasts (on any topic) would do. It was irritating, but also suspicious.

“And you know, you should really stop hitting on me, especially when I’m working. Just order something off the damn menu or leave.” Billy shook his head, “nah, I’d rather just enjoy the view.”

“Oh, please. Stare or don’t, you won’t get anything.”

You had a way of not mincing your words, arms folded tightly over your uniform. For a girl who looked as innocent as you did…you were kinda bad ass and Billy liked that. Everything about you did things to him below the belt. He shifted in the booth, his eyes still resting on you like he had never seen a girl before. Then to your surprise he simply got up from his seat and gave you a slight nod followed by a wink and grin. As you placed your hands on your hips the boy redirected his gaze to the door and left in a plume of dust.

“That’s what I thought, jackass.”

Moral of the Story. Masterlist.

Series Summary: From childhood friends, to highschool sweethearts, the two naive, young, and lovestruck teens decided the best way to keep a strong relationship during college would be to marry right out of highschool. No one batted an eye at the idea as everyone knew they were soulmates. However, college is a big step in a person’s life. You learn new things about yourself, you make new friends, find new hobbies… And maybe being newly weds and going to different colleges across the states wasn’t the best plan… After a falling out, a tragic and heartbreaking divorce, the two now despise the other for how the whole thing was handled. Neither not really knowing both sides of the story. 10 years later, and they both get a call from the lawyers office that settled their divorce. Somehow the papers never went through and the divorce was never completed. So now, the exes, or should we say husband and wife, have to meet back up after all these years to settle their failed marriage once and for all. (This summary will be shorter in other chapters. I just needed to get the full concept out there;)

A/N: So the other day while I was doing my hair (quite the process), I was playing music and the song Moral of the Story by Ashe came on. Mind you, I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, but for some reason, this time I got a major story idea! Listening to the lyrics brought me to this new series. Of course, the lengthy summary above will give you an idea of what came to my brain, but I recommend you listen to the song still because it plays a big part in my thought process:) (Plus it’s a good song;) Enjoy and please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and comments with me!
