Chapter 13 Fieldwork
Interviewer: Xavier Moore
Interviewee: Dwayne Clemons
In the late 80s Dwayne made one of the biggest decisions of his life when he decided to migrate from Jamaica to the United States. He bet on himself not really having a plan other than to find any type of work he could get. What really influenced and pushed him to come over to the United States was a new beginning. What he meant by that was he felt his life wasn't getting anywhere and needed new experience and opportunities. He wanted to start a new beginning and that was one of his biggest pull factors. He also already had some family in the United States so that made his decision a little easier. Dwayne never knew any other culture other than the one he grew up around in Jamaica. Now the hardest process for Dwayne to overcome was finding a job. He said that he wanted to do something that paid better than a simple maintenance job like he had back in Jamaica. His lack of English knowledge and his struggles to sometimes comprehend it didn't make finding a job and a place to like any easier. He was also in his early 20s throughout his whole decision-making process, so he didn't have much “Life experience”. A Huge factor that influenced his experience as an immigrant was the amount of maintenance jobs there were in the United States. He loved maintenance and even had a passion for it but didn't like the pay so he eventually Started his own plumbing company while he was in the United States. That process wasn't easy for him and there were lots for him to learn. His English comprehension was still poor. His family that was already in the United States helped him become fluent in English and also helped him start his maintenance business by becoming his first workers. His business started picking up customers fast and he said the money he was making in the United States was much more than he made back home. He made his money by posting flyers and knocking on doors to find customers. He would also go to bigger corporations and get contracted to work for them. Dwayne also found love while he was here and even had a child. Dwayne also never got the opportunity to finish developing his business and bring it to the internet because in 2010 his experience in the United States was cut short to an expiring visa and he had to go back. He was supposed to return back in 2020 but due to the pandemic that did not end up happening. He said he didn't mind going back because he had accomplished a lot while in the United States while the odds were not in his favor. He says that the only thing that upset him was having to leave behind the family he had there, especially his son. He started to get emotional because he wouldn't be there to watch his son grow up. His son was born in 2005 so he only got to spend 5 physical years with him. He said he still talks with his son frequently and still lets him know that Hes in his life and that his son and family understand that he can't come back at the moment but is still in their everyday lives from a distance.Â

Chapter 9 fieldwork
1. I chose my questions because i felt that they where easy to answer and because everyone would have different answers and different reasons
2. I noticed that people want to get married for different reasons and at different points in life. Also how people think that the environment they grew up in will affect how they act in marriage
3. The thing that surprises me is how many people want to get married
4. If I was doing things differently I would’ve targeted an older audience just because they have more life experience

Chapter 6 Fieldwork
After conducting research amongst my family as far as they know we have lived in this country for about 150 years up to date (given estimate). Nobody within close contact can give me accurate information on where we came from its almost unknown to the family, I'm getting my information. I'm pretty sure that my family has embraced American Nationalism, I'm not sure in what ways I'm trying to ask around, but they know as much as I do about our ancestry which is basically nothing. From our knowledge our family hasn't migrated from anywhere as far as we know. I do wish that my sources knew more about our earlier families, but it is what it is.

Chapter 5 Fieldwork
#1 Racism
Find 'racism' on TikTok | TikTok Search
The definition of race is "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized." I'd say this illustrates the concept of race because I think that racism is in the definition of race. I also read something about racial identity, and it stated that "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."
#2 Phenotype https://www.tiktok.com/@justinjikan/video/7156721600140954926?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7177196937103738411
Phenotype is the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. For example, size, hair color, mating behavior and pattern of movement are all traits of a particular phenotype. Phenotypes can change as a result of environmental factors, or their traits can change as an organism evolves or adapts. This would fit into race culture because this allows people to make race assumptions based off visual looks. I think that this also does incorporate racism in its own because of the possible ignorance that this topic brings.
#3 White Supremacy
Find 'white supremacy' on TikTok | TikTok Search
the belief that whites people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society, typically to the exclusion or detriment of other racial and ethnic groups, in particular black or Jewish people. "White supremacy, beliefs and ideas purporting natural superiority of the lighter-skinned, or “white,” human races over other racial groups. In contemporary usage, the term white supremacist has been used to describe some groups espousing ultranationalist, racist, or fascist doctrines. White supremacist groups often have relied on violence to achieve their goals. #4 Miscegenation https://www.tiktok.com/@smileybunch/video/6964453445877255430is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7177196937103738411
Miscegenation is the interbreeding of people considered to be of different racial types. For example, or to further explain this Miscegenation is the blending of different races, whether by marriage, cohabitation, procreation, or sexual intercourse. Miscegenation has been outlawed in the past, but over time society became more tolerant and accepting of the idea to the point where the term “miscegenation” has a negative connotation today. “Miscegenation” is all but eliminated from the modern vocabulary, with terms like “interracial” and “cross-cultural” now replacing the racist and archaic “miscegenation.” Id says this also generates racism people some people don't like the idea of interbreeding of people different racial types which for some people generates problems and creates racism.
#5 Hypodescent
Find 'Hypodescent ' on TikTok | TikTok Search
Hypodescent is defined as classify of a child of a mix union or “the subordinate category of any one of many ancestors”. It is also known as the one drop of blood rule. As for example, if a girl have a white skin tone and both of their parent are white, however one of her grandmas was an African- American. The entire concept of hypodescent is wrapped up in the obsession with so-called ''purity of blood.'' This means that your ancestry is racially homogenous. In this system, any racial mixing dilutes that purity. Since you are no longer ''pure,'' you don't belong in the pure category, and since this is a system where there are only two categories, you're automatically assigned to the other one.Â
6# Institutional Racism
Find 'Institutional Racism' on TikTok | TikTok Search
Institutional Racism discrimination or unequal treatment on the basis of membership in a particular ethnic group typically one that is a minority or marginalized, arising from systems, structures, or expectations that have become established within an institution or organization. "Unlike the racism perpetrated by individuals, institutional racism, also referred to as systemic racism, has the power to negatively affect the bulk of people belonging to a racial group. Institutional racism can be seen in areas of wealth and income, criminal justice, employment, health care, housing, education, and politics, among others." Id would say that this is a prime example of racism and how it comes in different ways. And I found out that The term "institutional racism" was first used in 1967 in the book "Black Power: The Politics of Liberation" written by Stokely Carmichael

FieldWork:#1 making Yeezys Unfamiliar
Founded in 2009 Kanye started to change up the sneaker designs. we all know what yeezys are and who created them. “Yeezys” are classified as adorned sneakers, but "Kanye has grown the Yeezy brand to include a clothing and accessory line, while also expanding his footwear line to include shoes like boots and heels. Beyond this, Kanye has grown the Yeezy brand through key partnerships with some of the best designers in the industry like Louis Vuitton, Nike, Adidas, and APC. His partnerships have spanned different lengths of time, with his Nike partnership lasting for five years, and his partnership with Adidas being ongoing. After a five-year collaboration, and after the release of the Yeezy I and Yeezy II sneaker designs, "Kanye ended his partnership with Nike". This came right after the release of the Air Yeezy 2s. Instead of paying royalties for Kanye’s designs, Nike decided to donate his earnings to a charity of his choice. After leaving Nike, Kanye was approached by Adidas, who, unlike Nike, offered to pay royalties for his designs (a 15% wholesale royalty). For Kanye, this felt like more of a true partnership between two brands. I’m current day after Kanye launched his Yeezy Season I clothing line, Adidas chose to end its partnership with Yeezy clothing. Adidas cited that this was because they wanted to focus entirely on their Yeezy footwear line, rather than splitting their focus. "
Where were Yeezys manufactured?
Yeezys are manufactured under Adidas in China, but Kanye West has been aiming toward moving Yeezy production to the US, Adidas makes most Yeezys in China. You will find a “Made in China” tag in most pairs of Yeezys. Nonetheless, Adidas began Yeezy production in Germany through the Yeezy 450. By 2021, Kanye West has aimed toward moving Yeezy production to the US.In 2020, Adidas earned an annual sales revenue of $1.7 billion from Yeezy. Real Yeezy are mostly made in China. After the Adidas acquisition, Yeezy are now manufactured in Germany as well.On the other hand, Kanye West proposed to make Yeezy in the United States. Consequently, Adidas makes Yeezy in the United States as well.
The impact Yeezys have one me
I’d say that Yeezys have a big impact on my life because I’ve been collecting them for a while now. I’ve become fascinated with the brand and how it’s different. Also, the vision behind them and how Kanye had an idea and turned it into reality not caring about what others had to say about it. Normally when people buy shoes they just go based off of look but when I buy Yeezys I really think about Kanye and the messages that he’s trying to put out and also they remind me to also be yourself, You never should worry about what the next person has to say about what your wearing it’s either you like it or not it doesn’t get much more simpler than that. Also, they have an impact on me in a fashion sense because I have a lot of them to put with different outfits and I can just try new combos out.
Who are the people directly involved with making or manufacturing this item? What is life like for them?
Reports of Chinese factory workers going underpaid have increased over the past few years. A consistent income is promised to many employees when they are hired as temporary or seasonal workers, especially in rural areas. However, they frequently put in long hours with little to no pay, which causes the impacted workers to live in abject poverty. In many places, there are no labor regulations or labor protections, which makes it easier for dishonest companies to take advantage of their employees. Unpaid labor in Chinese factories has its roots in a larger issue of systemic exploitation in the labor market of the nation. Many international firms have established operations in China due to the country's enormous pool of workers and affordable labor expenses.
