I’ve seen a lot of people say that Wait For Me should have been the Act I closer instead of Why We Build The Wall, but I really disagree. At first glance, it does admittedly make logical sense to send the audience into intermission with Wait For Me. It’s this uplifting, inspiring song of hope where Orpheus hears all these dangerous things about Hadestown but still goes to save his lover anyway, because that’s how things can be and how things should be.
But the thing is, the musical isn’t just about seeing how the world could be. It’s also about acknowledging how the world really is. That’s where Why We Build The Wall comes in. Immediately after the audience believes that Orpheus can truly defeat his threat with sheer determination, we’re harshly smacked in the face with what this threat really is: a dark reflection of the real world in which a political leader instills xenophobia into his citizens by convincing them of the danger that is outsiders. The audience is then sent into intermission doubting that Orpheus is truly capable of overcoming Hades and the nightmare he’s created, making Orpheus’ victories in Act II all the more exciting and his failures all the more tragic.

Falsettos 2016: An Analysis - Marvin's Character and Growth
youtube
MARVINS GROWTH in FALSETTOS 2016 Revival
The turning point for Marvin and his behaviour is in Marvin Hits Trina. At this point he has completely lose control of himself and the people around him – he has lost Whizzer and he has just received an invite to Trina and Mendel’s wedding. He goes on a rampage and ends up slapping Trina. When this happens, we see how frightened he looks by himself and what he’s done (I believe there’s also guilt that he did this in front of his son). I believe this is the final straw and the moment which ultimately makes him realise he needs to change his behaviour before he truly loses everything.
The first steps Marvin takes towards growth is trying to apologise and make reparations with Jason, his son (Father to Son). I personally find this really interesting because throughout Act 1 Marvin doesn’t seem to understand why Jason refuses to connect with him and it goes over his head that it is his own fault. I believe that by choosing to make peace with Jason first is his finally understanding and acknowledging the damage he has done to Jason because of his behaviour. This, societally, appears to be a harder thing for men to do as men are often raised to view a lot of the behaviours Marvin has exhibited as normal and to avoid the vulnerability that comes with apologising and thus do it much less often – which is why I believe this is the first, and a very crucial moment of growth for Marvin as it’s a clear first step to unlearning all the toxic societal ideologies he had internalised.
In Act 1, Marvin repeats the phrase “I want it all” many times. This is a goal of his that we watch him cling to desperately throughout this act, even when his means of doing so cause much more harm than good (which is often the case). However, in Act 2, Marvin’s motif changes to “All I want is you”. This is clear evidence of Marvin’s character growth and the work he has clearly done between Acts to unlearn and let go of his old, unhealthy ideals which mean he is both less desperate for control but also more comfortable in his identity and ready to embrace his sexuality and his love for Whizzer – something he wasn’t quite able to do in March of the Falsettos.
An essential “resource” for Marvin in his journey is his friendship with Charlotte and Cordelia, his new neighbours. “The lesbians from next door” provide a healthy example of a non-traditional family (they are both a queer and an interracial couple) and how despite being outside the “norm” they are still valid and fuelled with pure love. This is key to both Marvin’s character growth as it allows him to see positive depictions of queer identities, which challenges his internalised homophobia – thus helping him learn how to embrace his identity as a gay man as well as pushing him to take genuine action to keep his and Whizzer’s relationship healthy because he now knows it’s possible.
Some of my favourite moments of growth from Marvin are;
When he and the other men break out of the structure which represents the boxes they have put themselves and others in and letting go of the harmful ideas they have all internalised in Falsettoland.
When Whizzer collapses, Marvin gently cradles his face and whispers loving words to him. This open affection not only comforts Whizzer, but shows both Marvin’s character growth and how much healthier their relationship is than it was before their break, as before they rejected affection and most of their relationship was built off of sex. This is because Marvin was still battling with severe internalised homophobia.
In Unlikely Lovers Marvin allows Whizzer to hold him from behind whilst they cry over Whizzer’s inevitable death. This communicates Marvin’s character development as before his struggle with internalised homophobia and toxic masculinity made him think he had to be distant and unaffectionate as that’s what he was taught a man should be and had been brainwashed into thinking that being gay inherently compromised his masculinity and therefore overcompensated by playing into more toxic masculinity roles. Thus he would never let himself be perceived as weaker than Whizzer. However now, he is happy to be the “little spoon” (not only showing open affection but also being taken care of and being smaller than Whizzer) which shows how far he has come and the work he’s done on unlearning these behaviours.
