❝ you will. i promise, people will see you for who you are, you wont be in your parents shadow forever ❞ and it was a promise, one she intended to keep. he was scarred just as much as she was, who knows what his parents were like: especially ones who worked at a place like murkoff; that on top of everything that happened there? max deserved a break. even beth could see that and she hated him at one point. if she forgave him, if she could separate his parents from himself. others will too, it just takes time. but to him that must feel like a lifetime.

when he did flinch, even though she was expecting a reaction, beth wasn’t that much of one; scanning his face as he tried to calm down, relax a little from the touch -  it reminded her a little of… herself. head tilting to the side briefly before shaking her head just as quick, ❝no.. no its okay, i… i get it… i’m sorry, i shouldn’t have — ❞ deciding it was best to drop it, there was no good in assuming anything, even so - it was his past, his history. once he showed her the scar, giving a proper look at it, she had to resist the urge to run her finger over it, it amazed her the ranges of scars that everyone had from the riot, all different, proof they SURVIVED -  in one place they all had such, different experiences, in a weird way, that fascinated her some how.

❝ looks like it healed nicely, if that counts for anything ❞ there was a small smile on beth’s face when she said it, it probably didn’t - but it was still something.

“And if I don’t? It’s all I’ve ever known- how do you escape from the only thing you ever knew?” Maxwell replied quietly, gaze only flicking up to her face for a second. Getting the others to trust him wouldn’t just happen overnight. Hell, it may not even happen at all. They knew he worked for Murkoff. The very people hunting them down. For all they knew, he could be lying about this entire thing.

It wouldn’t be the first time Murkoff sent someone undercover to get a patient or someone they found interesting.

Being touched was something Maxwell had never been good with. He always had to force himself to not run from his parents’ contact in public, in fear of what they would do in return. He offered a small, weak smile, finally bringing his gaze up to Beth’s face. “I guess I got lucky there.” He inhaled shakily, forcing his shoulders to relax as much as possible. He got lucky with the scar on his hand, but not so much with his eye. He was half blind, had you look close enough, the faint, almost cloudy sheen over his eye was a tell-tale give away of that.
