Google’s Gender Disparity Highlights the Need for Continued Efforts
Alaina Percival, Women Who Code CEO and Board Chair
Google released some rather damning statistics last week, giving the world insight into their diversity numbers, or more precisely lack there of. I’ve been hearing rumors for a while that this information was coming out and that it wasn’t going to be pretty. Now that I’ve seen the hard figures for myself I’m saddened, but at the same time I view them as a benchmark and look forward to seeing the impact that Women Who Code can have on the situation moving forward.
Women are not a minority, and make up 50% of the overall population. However according to the report they only hold 30% of the overall jobs at Google, and account for only 17% of the technical work force. While these numbers are troubling they aren’t really unexpected, and are indicative of a wider problem across the entire computer science industry. In an independent community report looking at tech companies with over 100 employees it was found that only three organizations, ThoughtWorks and New Relic, had more than 17% of females on staff. Unfortunately this is a problem that’s systemic, starting in our universities where only 18% of computer science degrees are earned by women. While these numbers are embarrassingly bad, the first step to fixing a problem is admitting that you have one. Google has not yet succeeded in bridging the gender gap in its own organization, but by releasing this information it has made a public commitment to improve. My hope is that this is only the beginning, and that their leadership will inspire other companies to release their employment numbers, as well as more information about disparities in salary and promotions.
While I am saddened, I don’t find this information disheartening. In fact I find it inspiring. And it only goes to show the vital importance of organizations like Women Who Code, Code2040, and the Level Playing Field Institute, who are working hard to increase the number of talented engineers who come from underrepresented groups. It is only through our continued efforts that we will see these numbers improve.
Alaina Percival is CEO and Board Chair of Women Who Code, a global non-profit dedicated to inspiring women to excel in technology careers. The organization provides an avenue into tech, empowers women with the skills needed for professional advancement, and provides environments where networking and mentorship are valued. Women Who Code has executed more than 700 events around the world, garnered a membership exceeding 12,000, and has a presence in 14 countries.
