9.4.2020 // This pool of snowmelt looked ever so refreshing after the 8 mile hike in. After a quick step in to filter some water, quickly found out it was the coldest water I'd been in and there was zero chance of submerging in there. #GoatRocksWilderness #Washington #USA (at Goat Rocks Wilderness) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFASON2JlkZ/?igshid=lfb3r6c47sba

9.4.2020 // Spent the past weekend backpacking through the Goat Rocks Wilderness. The place is Wow, well once you get off the main trails and away from the crowds. This place isn't a big secret, being halfway between Portland and Seattle, it does attract a crowd, especially on any long weekend.. #GoatRocksWilderness #Washington #USA (at Goat Rocks Wilderness) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9xgU4JCrF/?igshid=1nuxa09bia5jo

8.29.2020 // "What happens is that the cumulus cloud, boiling upwards, pushes the air layers above it higher and higher," Cowley explained. "As the air gets pushed upwards, it expands and cools. And sometimes moisture in that air suddenly condenses into tiny droplets to form a cap cloud." This "cap"鈥攚hich scientists call a "pileus"鈥攊s the source of the brilliant spectacle. "The droplets in the cap cloud scatter sunlight to form the gorgeous colors." Though the ingredients for rainbow clouds(also known as cloud iridescence)seem simple, they're not spotted often, and are even less frequently photographed. #AlpineLakeWilderness #Washington #USA (at Alpine Lakes Wilderness) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4jd4Epkv0/?igshid=lzyu8mkrwrb6

8.16.2020 // While we were having lunch at the summit of South Sister, some orange and black butterflies started to fly by. At first just a few that were barely noticeable, followed by what seemed like thousands of them. Some internet research explained why exactly these insects were hanging out at 10,000 feet. So the butterflies(California Tortoiseshells) are known to have periodic population explosions. The behavior of flying at high elevations is called hilltopping, believed to be involved in mate-seeking. By flying uphill to a hilltop, the butterflies can collectively boost the chances of finding a mate. Many butterfly species do this, but Tortoiseshells are most noticed because there are so many in peak years. Always awesome when you can notice natural phenomena like this! #SouthSister #ThreeSistersWilderness #Oregon #USA (at South Sister Summit) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEkrRFbJQ_v/?igshid=18963urmeuc5p
