Smile
“A smile looks wonderful on you, my dear” The man placed his gentle hand on his wife's cheek as she grinned.
“Why thank you! I’m just so excited! Oh, I really hope it's gone.” The woman's smile radiated hopefully as her eyes swelled with tears. She hugged her husband with a rough grip before pulling back and typing her messy brown hair into a ponytail.
“You’ve been getting stronger every day, Mel. There’s no doubt in my mind that the cancer is completely gone. I mean just look at you! Your face is all bright and cheery again.” The man chuckled as he watched Mel rush to put her shoes on. “It’s been two years since your diagnosis and you’ve never looked better, my love. I have hope” “You flatter me. Anyway, I’m gonna be late. Wish me luck!” With a quick kiss on Noah’s cheek, Mel left through the front door.
An hour or so came and went before Mel arrived home. She closed the front door gently and shuffled towards the kitchen with a distant stare. “Melissa, my love, how did it-” Noah’s smile dropped as he saw his wife’s puffy red eyes and tired state. “go.. Oh Mel.. What happened?” He rushed over to his wife, pulling her into a firm embrace while calmly caressing her back. She broke down into a hysterical sob while her hands weakly gripped her lover’s shirt. “It’s back…” Melissa whispered through her tears. “It's back and it's worse than before. I don't get it! I feel fine Noah, why is it worse?!” She fell to her knees and sobbed into her hands, the tears seeping through the gaps and dripping onto the hardwood flooring. Noah bent down to her level, a soft smile crawling across his face.
“Now my love, I get this is stressful and unpleasant but you’ve lost your smile and I don’t like that.” Despite the soft and calming tone of his voice, Melissa couldn't help but notice the slight uneasiness that began to build in her chest. She looked up at her husband, the hot tears still spilling from her eyes. Noah smiled at her with an icy grin, his eyes dull and unsettling.
“Noah.. Noah you’re scaring me” Melissa slowly began to crawl backwards as fear overwhelmed her. Her chest grew tight and her whole body ached as she watched her husband slowly stand. He pulled out a small pocket blade and began to shuffle towards her. “Noah I’m fucking serious! Stay away from me!” Melissa’s back hit the wall and she looked up at the person before her. That wasn’t her Noah… He towered over her for a moment before bending down and putting a gentle hand on his wife’s cheek. The blade moved closer to her mouth before a sudden sharp pain began. Blood dripped from Mel’s cheek as she choked on a scream. Her clothes soon stained red as Noah continued to carve at her face. Any remnant of the man she married was now gone and crouched before her was now a blood-hungry monster.
“A smile looks wonderful on you my dear…”
