title: the trouble with wanting is i want you
rating: teen
warnings: n/a
a/n: A friend, hoping to spark some creativity, hosted a mini promptathon and months later, I am slowly getting around to editing and posting the little oneshots and drabbles I managed to come up with. This was written in approximately September 2023.
summary: Lucy miscalculated or misread or just plain made a mistake. She had really truly believed they were waiting, anticipating, the same future. She had been wrong. She'd probably be wrong again in the future, but for now, it was time to focus on moving on.

Learning Lucyās body language had been a critical part of their partnership when sheād returned to his shotgun seat after she was buried alive. Ā Some things hadnāt changed. Lucy still complained about the AC, and Tim complained about her complaining. She tried to explain the genius of Cardi B, and he tried to explain the genius of the Ramsā offensive line. But some things were different. Their relationship had undergone a tectonic shift in the desert, blurring the line between professional and personal; demolishing the wall that Tim had so carefully built between them. It was hard to know where they stood. Sheād been honest about her readiness for work, her feelings, and her recovery, but only to a point. She wanted Tim to see her as whole, undamaged, and strong. She tried to cover the dark circles under her eyes from sleepless nights and the bruises from hours of sparring. She tried to hide the way her breathing went shallow every time she entered an elevator or someone bumped her in a crowd. Tim learned to read the things she couldnāt or wouldnāt say by the way she moved, and the gaps in her words.

Hours later, after he spends most of his night at the station, answering questions, giving his statement, and trying to burn the memory out of his skin with the worldās hottest shower, Tim lays in bed and misses Lucy.
He wishes he couldāve seen her face when she opened the door and saw Kojo. Sheād been asking about him, just before their break-up. Had been missing him, he knew, even though they both knew Kojo was probably happier spending all that time with his sister and nephews then he wouldāve been in Lucyās small apartment. He wonders, absently, what sheāll do with the card ā if she will put it up on the fridge next to the photo booth pictures of her and Jackson, or maybe stack it on her dresser where she always left his oldest, coziest sweatshirts to slip on in the cold mornings. He knows she wonāt throw it away, not with Kojoās paw print on it, and maybe that was selfish of him to do. He just misses her.
He wonāt see her tomorrow. Sheād taken the day off, they both had, had made plans to go for a hike at Laurel Canyon, then stop at her favorite brunch place, where she would get adorably tipsy and red and beautiful. It had seemed like such a simple plan for a birthday, when she had suggested it, nothing out of the ordinary for a weekend day off, but then, every day he had spent alone with her had felt like a celebration. Instead, Celina, Angela, and Nyla have promised that they are going to wake her up with breakfast and find a way to make her birthday special, and he will work after all, and he will keep missing her.
He rolls over and almost ends up on top of Kojo. He had trained Kojo to stay on his bed on the floor, but that had all gone out the window once Kojo had had his pick of three different beds to choose from at his sisterās house. But Tim canāt find it in himself to mind, not now, not when his bed feels so vast and empty and cold. Kojoās soft snores are comforting, and when he tugs him closer, he could swear he gets just a hint of Lucyās perfume on his furry head.
He tries to convince himself that heās doing the right thing. And he misses her.

Idk where I read it, but whoever said Lucy was actually crying because Kojo learned how to write and head to her apartment by himself without Tim? I hate you with a great passion š

Something I hate is when the dynamics change when the ship becomes cannon.
What do you mean, the grumpy character is suddenly nice to everyone when they start dating sunshine?!?!?!?!
How dare you make the sexually-charged insults go away when the rivals become a couple?
Are you implying that the sarcasm and pointed insults just stop when the ship is cannon?
Give me a grumpy character acting like a serial killer while holding their sunshine partner's hand.
Give me the rivals insulting eachother while pinned against a wall.
Give me character A sassying off to character B as they're cuddling in front of the TV.
PLEASE, I NEED IT.
