English week 6
Number 2
Yes society is becoming too sensitive or too soft. A group of hockey players were released or waived from their programs and teams. According to Sam Jarden (2020), on wednesday night some photos were released of a private chat, where men had crude, derogatory and misogynistic language toward women and references to drugs. Where they were then released from their programs because they don't tolerate such behaviour and attitudes. I think they are being too sensitive because it's a private conversation where friends are talking to each other with the thought that only them will be seeing this. I'm sure if their conversation was going to be hacked, they would not have spoken that way. There are billions of people in the world and these men are getting the heat and losing their positions because their private conversation was hacked and leaked. We can also look at if they weren't professional hockey players would society still target them, and I think otherwise because if they were regular people this issue would be put aside and looked at as not that big. But they are professionals and companies need to report on news so what better way than using big names to attract people.
Today's society has become a victim of complainers who overreact too often. Here we will be looking at two articles that demonstrate this. According to Sam Samson (2020), a girl by the name of Nicolle Zajac was one of the people mentioned in the private group chat that was mentioned in the previous paragraph. As positivity she posted a picture of her being sad with the comments from the chat photo shopped on her picture, then a picture of her being happy with positive comments on the picture. She goes on to say why focus on the negative stuff when we can celebrate the positive things. She also mentions to not take these comments seriously and that she is friends with some of them so she gave them a message to talk about it. This is a great example of how to handle a situation and she didn't overreact but handled the situation in a positive way. But she is only one of few who did not overreact from the private chat. From the same article the commissioner makes comments about how this is unacceptable and how at the start of the season they go through social media policy with players and that this behaviour is unacceptable. Now here I feel like he is definitely over reacting because he mentions that they go through social media policy but this is based upon private conversations, and yes the conversation took place on social media but they never posted those messages and were supposed to be private between friends. This is not their fault that the private conversation was leaked and now have to lose their position within their jobs. This also relates to the article done by Hayden Bird (2018), a new baseball player is supposed to make his first all star appearance when his racist tweets from high school make an appearance all over social media. He then gets bashed by sports news reporters from something he posted six years ago when nobody knew him. I think people overreacted because they didn't need to bash him now because they did not do it before but now he's a pro and their is problem. Although one person did great at not over reacting, the others did not there fore the society is a victim of overreacting.

Week 5
3. Necessary can be defined as required to be done, or present; needed; essential. Now essential can be defined as absolutely necessary;extremely important. It is not necessary for sports to resume for the rest of 2020. A worldwide pandemic is occurring right now, where social distancing is a big step to help fight the cause. If sports were to resume they would not be respecting those rules, and would not be setting a good example for others worldwide. If athletes do not have social distance, why would others, is something that would pop into many people’s heads. Also sports are not essential, sports may be important but not enough for people to be risking their lives. This is why it is not necessary for sports to resume for the rest of 2020.
If sports leagues are going to resume play, then the players will have to be tested continuously. Is this justfitable when tests are not available to most people including including essential services
2. Getting continuously tested is not “special consideration” but a business precaution. Canada has to pay taxes and insurance, so that when one goes to the doctors or hospital it is free. The United States on the other hand has to pay when one goes to the doctors or hospital. Referring back to the question “if sports leagues are going to resume play, then players will have to be tested continuously.” but who is going to pay or provide the doctors that have to test players, the leagues. If this is the case it is not special consideration because it is the companies\leagues choice to get players\ employees tested. For this to be a special consideration, it would have to be the government's choice to provide leagues with tests and not essential workers, in this case athletes would not deserve the special consideration but essential workers would. Essential workers put their lives on the line for work that is needed and extremely important, where sports are not needed. This could cause controversy between canadian leagues and american leagues, such as the CFL and NFL because the canadian league can get tested for free while the american team has to pay.
safety , not essential, not fair
1. All sports should be canceled for the remainder of 2020. Sports are not essential, meaning it is not the basic standards for living, life will continue if there were no sports. People at the front lines are risking their lives working everyday, and some are not even being continuously tested. If sports were to re open players would be continuously tested, but in the article it states that there is not an unlimited supply of material and this would mean players would be getting tested although they don’t have symptoms. Where it would be much more useful is going towards people who have symptoms.
All sports should be canceled for the remainder of 2020. The safety of athletes are more important than the games, money and business. In the video it says on average 50 thousand people are seated in games at the area, if sports reopen the fans would be putting players and themselves at risk. It should not take one athlete to get sick for leagues to realize that opening sports backup is not a good idea. Many people are losing lives around the world, leagues know they could be putting lives at risk by resuming play. This would be a poor choice considering the knowledge they have on the virus.
All sports should be canceled for the remainder of 2020. Finally it would just be unfair, teams would have to be in a bubble burst; players\teams are all in one state and play their games there. They would be under strict precaution and rules, this would mean not seeing family for a certain period of time, everyone is playing games in one area so there is no home court. Also if a player were to get the virus this would mean they can not play, now imagine the lakers having to play but lebrons out because of the virus. This would not be fair to the team because of the greatness lebron brings to the team. This would also come down to if the players are comfortable doing this. Sports should remain cancelled for the rest of 2020.

Why are concussions so dangerous and why should we be taking them more seriously
Concussions cause many obstacles to overcome. These obstacles can be seen in our everyday life. With concussions there are many symptoms and side effects that take place. They tend to vary, some including severe brain trauma, headaches, loss in vision, unable to concentrate, memory loss and mood swings. They create obstacles in our life that make it hard to continue our healthy lives. Normal events people would be able to do, now become harder due to the fact they have a concussion. Not only is it dangerous but if you get to many, it can cause life threatening problems with severe brain damage. Now we should be taking them more seriously because it is not a joke. A lot of the time doctors under look patients then it later causes them to have severe damages. Where if they were taken more seriously, it could have helped and prevented the damages that had occurred. Multiple concussions can lead to severe brain damage, but if one can prevent it then we would be able to reduce the harm being done. Concussions are not just dangerous but over time they can become life threatening, this is why we need to be taking them more seriously.

Dereck boogaard the boogie man
Fighting is a part of hockey, it is not permitted but still occurs within the sport, therefore there are consequences. Fighting in the NHL does not just take a toll on their hands and heads, but physical and mental state of mind. Derek Boogaard had started fighting from being a young teenager, to an elite enforcer in the NHL. With every fight, Boogaard would put more and more stress on his body. This would cause more and more injuries to pile up, as if getting body checked was not enough, he would still go out to play every night . A punch in the NHL has the ability to make a career and end a career, in one of Derek’s fights he caused another enforcer to get 4 metal plates to reconstruct his face. Later on that player said it was the hardest punch he has ever encountered. He then started to use painkillers where he got addicted and was sent to rehab. During boogaards last season with Minnesota his injuries were really starting to pile up. He was also put on painkillers where he then became addicted. With him being addicted to painkillers and getting punched in the face almost every game it was not a good look, Derek’s family could start to tell something was up but could not pinpoint what. In his final season he got a concussion that caused him to sit out and go to rehab. He then took time off to spend with family, where he went out one night and had a few drinks and painkillers. The next day he was found dead in his bed. A doctor concluded his death was caused by a lethal mix of oxycodone and alcohol that overwhelmed the boogaards system. Scientists at Boston university had said fighting has set his brain up for a lifetime of brain damage. In his brain CTE was discovered in multiple parts but started to spread to other parts of his brain. A brief description of CTE would be getting hit in the head over and over without taking care of it u then later get behavioural problems and start acting different personality wise (this is what Derek's family started to notice but could not pinpoint it) this can later turn into memory loss or dementia and that’s CTE. This shows that there should be more precaution to fighting in the NHL or a larger consequence for it. Fighting can cause a long term health effect and has no positive outcomes. Nobody is responsible for Derek’s death, although fighting had a butterfly effect that caused him to die. Derek's death was caused by a lethal mix of oxycodone and alcohol. Also known as painkillers and alcohol. Derek had to take painkillers from the the overdue of pain caused by fighting. If Derek did not fight, he would not have to deal with the same amount of pain that led him to take the pain killers and caused his death. No one was responsible but act of fighting was the cause.

Do icons exist in the world today ?
ENG3U2-03 Keedon Cokely
Icons Essay Jozen-Dell Adato
Mar.03.20 Alan Cheriyan
An Icon is a person who takes a stand for what they believe in and represents growth and positive change in the community. Lebron James, Colin Kapernick, and Serena Williams are some of the most influential athletes of this century. Many people around the world have made references between them and Muhammad Ali, one of the biggest icons to ever live. Each of these athletes have positively affected the people around them with their influential actions. It is clear that these athletes share some of the same fundamental characteristics of any well known icon. It would be appropriate to say that icons do exist in the world today. Through their positive influences and their legacies, it is demonstrated that these athletes are icons.
Lebron James is an icon because of his positive influences on his community. In an interview lebron spoke about how growing up he didn’t have much and he knows the struggle the kids are going through now.“ Everything these kids are going through - the drugs, the violence, the guns, everything they're going through as kids, I know. For me to be in a position where I have the resources , the finance, the people, the structure and city around me - why not?”1 it is appropriate to say that Lebron is not just a superstar athlete, but an idol in the eyes of young children. A lot of children are going through the same unfortunate conditions Lebron once did. With all that Lebron is starting to do for the community, children living with unfortunate conditions are now given an opportunity that would be considered as life changing. Lebron understands what it’s like to live in a environment of struggle, and now how’s the ability to impact many young lives. Also he can be an image of hope and inspiration to many young kids around the world. In a speech announcing the opening of a school Lebron speaks about what ultimately motivated him to make this happen. “I want people to know that these kids should still have the same opportunity as everybody else. That’s what’s most important. Us as adults, we have a responsibility to not let these kids down, to continue to be the teachers, the mentors, the parents, the coaching, the life skills, the superheroes ... whatever it is that gives the inspiration, everything, that’s our responsibility. These kids are our future and they have dreams and aspirations bigger than the city of Akron, than the state of Ohio, than the USA.”2 It can be seen that not every kid will get the same opportunity as one anothrter. As an adult lebron feels it's not just his responsibility, but everyone's responsibility to give these kids an equal opportunity. In the NBA there are many athletes who fundraise and donate to charities, but nobody except lebron has opened up a new school to give kids a free education and a new opportunity to their life. Not just young children aspire to follow in the steps of Lebron, but because of him, multiple super star athletes are trying to have a positive change in their community. Many kids look up to adults as role models and leaders we inspire to be like. With Lebron being one of the most well known basketball players on and off the court, it is clear to say a lot of kids see lebron as more than just a basketball player, but as an icon though his positive influence on the community. It can be said that Colin Kaepernick is an icon because of his efforts off the field.
Colin Kaepernick is an icon because he stood up for the rights of himself and others by kneeling down during the anthem even though it jeopardized his career. Throughout history many people of colour went through lots of difficulty, whether it be discrimination or abuse. Colin delivered a speech in the Netherlands where he had expressed his concerns over the situation he was in. “As police officers continue to terrorize black and brown communities, abusing their power, and then hiding behind their blue wall of silence, and laws that allow for them to kill us with virtual impunity, I have realized that our love, that sometimes manifests as black rage, is a beautiful form defiance against a system that seeks to suppress our humanity”3. (New York Times, 2018) Colin knelt down during the anthem to silently fight against the abuse of police, racism and the injustice people of color have had/ currently have to endure throughout their life. There have been many instances where officers have abused people of color because of things like fear and protection. Even though they act abusive, the fact that they have laws and their own occupation itself to back their actions up, there are not many problems or consequences that arise from their conduct. When the coloured people retaliate or question these actions, it is seen as rage or anger. People essentially want coloured people to regret their actions and not express opinions. For Colin’s case, coaches, the media and even the President of the U.S was against his actions with Trump saying that he should be fired and lose his career. Throughout his career, Colin aimed to be a hero, hero’s often have specific goals that they aim to achieve. ‘’Kaepernick has one main goal: he wants people to be better than he was. To be treated fairly. To address and work to fix oppression. Heroes, written or real, plead for a better future’’4. (SB Nation, 2016) Although kneeling can be seen as a disrespectful act, that was not the intention of the quarterback. He realized the many problems that were prevalent in the community he was in and wanted to fight for change and improvement. He aimed for people of colour to be treated fairly with respect which was something that was almost never a thing in the past but is slowly becoming prevalent in this current day. Even though Colin was treated unfairly for his conduct, through his actions he hoped for other people to receive the respect he never gained. While fixing the oppression many had to endure in the process. Overall it is acceptable to say that Colin just wanted a better and fair future for all those who are coloured and treated disrespectfully. Overtime demonstrating that he is an icon. One could also say that Serena Williams is considered to be an icon through her efforts.
Moreover, Serena Williams is an icon not only because she is one of the world's greatest tennis players, but because she is a symbol for young girls all over the world, and she represents equality in sports between men, women and people of all races and religions. An article from ‘The New York Times’ describes her as and her sister (another professional tennis player) as a symbol for feminism. “The newcomers represent various races and nationalities, but women of color have been especially inspired in a sport where finding their likeness used to be rare.”5 It is clear that in the modern world there are few recognizable coloured female athletes. Many young girls around the world look up to Serena Williams. After witnessing all that she has accomplished in the past, young girls can feel encouraged and inspired to become great athletes, as well as strong independent women in a male dominant world. She is also a symbol of strength and power for black women to look up. In a sport where black women are the minority, Serena Williams has dominated for many years. She has shown not just to black women, but to black men as well, that race is irrelevant if one has the strength and determination to accomplish great things in life. The same article explains how Serena Williams was able to create opportunities for future female athletes. “The struggles and slights that the Williams sisters have endured have made it much easier for the next generation of players, like Taylor Townsend, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Naomi Osaka and now Coco Gauff, to find a place of favor in a white-dominated, elite sport.”6 Her contribution to the sport paved the way for future athletes of various ethnicities to dominate in a white male dominated sport. Serena Williams is different from the average tennis player in the sense that not many other tennis players are icons. The population of globally recognized female athletes is scarce and aspiring female athletes don't have many role models to look up to. Serena Williams is a public figure that young women around the world can look up to and feel confident in themselves and their abilities. Women of colour can especially feel confident that they can do just as well as any man or woman of any race or religion in whatever they do in life. In a mostly white dominant sport, Serena Williams changed the perception that tennis is a white man's sport. Seeing her and other coloured female tennis players has brought fans the realization that anyone can be a professional tennis player, if they work hard enough. Prejudices regarding female coloured tennis players have slowly started to disappear, allowing many more aspiring black female tennis players to play professionally. Serena Williams is an amazing athlete who has one of the most recognizable names in all of women's sports. Regardless of when she chooses to retire, people all over the world will still remember the legend of Serena Williams for many years to come.
It would be appropriate to say that icons do exist in the world today. Lebron James is an icon because of his positive influences on his community.Colin Kaepernick is an icon because he stood up for the rights of himself and others by kneeling down during the anthem even though it jeopardized his career. Serena Williams is an icon not only because she is one of the world's greatest tennis players, but because she is a symbol for young girls all over the world, and she represents equality in sports between men and women. It would be suitable to say these three athletes are icons.

Should the Olympics be canceled because of the carona virus? If no state what they could do in order to make this problem better.
The olympics should not be cancelled because of the Coronavirus. To begin with, I think the olympics should not be cancelled because athletes have put in so much effort and dedication towards their work their entire lives and for this to be taken away from them, it would be unfair. In addition, studies have shown that most people will recover from the virus if they have a healthy human body, but those who have severe conditions have it more at risk. For those who have severe conditions, I do not think they should be obligated to watch the olympics. Meaning, the event would have to become more restricted for safety reasons . Lastly, so much money has been invested into the olympics by creating new parks and areas for the participants, and for all that to be thrown away, it would be a complete waste and there wouldn’t be a way of getting the money back. Overall, I think that cancelling the olympics would have less benefits. If it were to be continued, athletes would still be able to do what they love, money would not be wasted and people around the world will still be able to enjoy a joyful event. In conclusion, I do not think the olympics should be cancelled because of the Coronavirus.

Third Blog Based On Muhammad Ali
2 ways Muhammad Ali was a icon
Icon- someone who becomes bigger than the sport.
1. Muhammad was a proud black man who wanted equality for his fellow black people
2. Muhammad strongly followed his religion and stuck to his beliefs.
Muhammad Ali is someone who became a icon within time. The very first start of this was after he won a gold metal for his country in boxing, he went to a local restaurant to get some food and the white waiter refused to serve him because of his skin tone and said they do not serve black people . So he starts to realize that something is wrong with that, he just won’t a gold metal for his county and he can’t served some food in his own city . The first way Muhammad Ali is a icon because he is a proud black man who stands up for himself and wants all other black people to be treated equally as white people. Muhammad has many interviews where he talks about not just boxing but how he wants more for his people he wants blacks to be treated equally for example when he went to a gas station whites get to use the front and the blacks had to use the back, so he wanted a change. Then Muhammad starts to realize how all the bad things are related to being black and he doesn’t understand stand, for example black cats mean bad luck and black mail is bad but why can’t it be white mailing. Things start to catch on and he publicly speaks about not caring for boxing as much because there is something bigger, it is the fact his fellow black people are not being treated the same and he wants to help fix this problem. Muhammad was a very confident out spoken black man who knew how to promote himself and white people did not like that, it showed other black people to be confident within them selves. Another way Muhammad became a icon was his ability to stand with his religious beliefs. He first converted to become a Muslim after he met Malcomx and that had a huge impact on Muhammad because he started to look more into civil rights and wanted make more of a impact for helping his people. Later on the Vietnam war came along, not enough people were in the army so they had to start drafting young men. Eventually Muhammad was drafted and he refused to go, not because he was scared but because of his religious view on war was that muslims do not believe in war. He said he has nothing against Vietnam people they never did anything wrong to him so why would he want to harm them when they never did harm to him, and he really stuck by this. It led him to have many problems because there was a controversy about it not being fair because his religion does not believe in war , so it’s not fair to send a man to war when he doesn’t believe in it and others said it’s fake and he doesn’t deserve to not go to war because he is like everyone else. Muhammad ended up going to jail and getting stripped of his championship belt because of his religious beliefs and the fact that he stuck by it through the consequences shows why he is bigger than the sport. He later would get his title back after his 3 year punishment of not being aloud to fight.

Second Blog Based On Movie
How are sports a transformative experience?
1. Brings people together and puts away problems
2. It can be used to lead through example
In other words: How do sports have the ability to change the society?
Society can be defined as a group of people living within a area. People love sports and love
Sports have the ability to change society by bringing people together and putting away problems. This can be seen throughout the movie Invictus, the country of South Africa loves rugby and the springboks. During the movie it is evident that that the springboks represent the white and there is a apartheid with the country meaning separation of blacks and whites, but throughout the movie one can see how the springboks can bring the country together and put away the problem of apartheid. Everyone loves rugby but not everyone loves the springboks they represent the white so all the blacks cheer against them. However the springboks make a tremendous effort to include blacks more by going to clinics to play with little black kids. Then later on it is shown the white and black body guards playing and teaching rugby together while just having fun. This shows the world that blacks and whites can come together and play the sport even tho there is a problem which is the apartheid. In facts rugby brought the whites and blacks together to play the sport which helped get rid of the apartheid problem.
Sports have the ability to change the society by leading through example. In the movie Invictus based off a true story there is a apartheid with the whole country of south Africa. Sports have the ability to change the apartheid by leading through example, this was shown in the movie when Mandela gets the white springboks teams to go to coach clinics all over South Africa and they play with little black kids. This shows how sports has the ability to change a society by leading through example because the county had a apartheid meaning separation of white and blacks but the white springboks team went around to play with black kids and people would see the team doing this so others would now think it’s okay to have black and whites together which is good.

Second Blog Based On Movie
Something I learned:
There are many great ideas and lesson one could learn from the movie Invictus. Now what I got from the movie invictus was, sometimes one must put their personal opinion down in order to see the bigger picture. An example of this in the movie would be when Mandela is at home with his family and his daughter sees the news paper of him shakinghands with the captain of the rugby team. She is upset because he reminds her of the body guard that was outside their house while Mandela was in prison. But Mandela wants her to see that it’s bigger than just that, the black president is shaking hands with the white captain of the springbonks during a time of trying to stop the apartheid. Another example of this would be near the start of the movie when Mandela walks in as president and sees all the white folks packing their stuff to leave. He then has a meeting with them to say if they want to leave they can but blacks and whites must come together to stop the apartheid. People first opinion was they didn’t want to work for Mandela the black president but once they saw he wants to stop apartheid and work together to help the separation of the country, they put their opinions down and saw the bigger picture so they stayed to work for him. Finally when the white body guards came to help the black body guards near the start of the movie, the black body guards were furious because white men were there to help. So they spoke to Mandela and he explained that in order to stop apartheid they must work together because when Mandela walks around they will see his body guards and if they were only black it would not be a good look. Then the black body guards recognized what it meant to work with them so they put their personal opinion down because they could see the bigger picture. This is what I learned from the movie, that sometimes one must put their personal opinion down to see the bigger picture.

10 points important ideas
1- Mandela became president and wanted to change the apartheid ( blacks and whites are separated)
2- Mandela was in prison for 30 years, he gets out and wants peace and white people think he’s a terrorist.
3- Black people were finally given the right to vote, for 30 year only white people were aloud
4- Lots of people want Mandela dead bc he’s president, makes his body guards scared that someone is always trying to attack him.
5- Mandela tells his workers that if they want to leave it’s their right but in order to get rid of discrimination they need black and white people to come and work together.
6- Mandela says Reconciliation and forgiveness, reconciliation means for blacks and white to work together and they need forgiveness( the hardest part) although whites have did them dirty for 30 years they need to forgive them.
7- Mandela always encouraged blacks to be openminded so they could all become one
8- Mandela organizes a coaches clinic where athletes would go around to play with younger children
