“Grave robber? I haven’t been called one in years!” Amused by the notion he’s still mistakable for a scampish little thief, Illinois slides off most of the desk in a fit of laughter. Grave robbing is what thieves did when they were bored. Coming back with shattered pottery they glue back together and sell at auctions alongside seized cars.
“If your collection is anything like this, I may want to prepare for it. Charms and protective measures, maybe even some curse breakers if I’m that unlucky. I lock up my more volatile artifacts in the attic.”
[DOPPELGANGER] with a twist... It's the splitting image of Illinois that's behind him. -@blood-falling
Another cave, another companion already lost to the traps still active, another artifact he sought out and brought back home. Practically the same as what he’d found back in the abandoned mineshaft three months ago. A fish carved in brilliant glass, glowing in the flickering lightbulb of his office. That one was still a work in progress. Both heads of the fish stare and gape at Illinois in disbelief that they’ve been brought into a museum.
Wrapping it into a secure case, he turns around to grasp randomly at the table behind him in search of tape. Not expecting the solid form he ends up hitting instead. A spirit accidentally released from the fish? A guardian following him back to steal it back? Leaving the artifact on the table, Illinois turns to see his doppelgänger. Admittedly not the worst sight to suddenly see, but unnerving. “Good..evening,” he slowly remarks, watching to see if it repeats itself.

“Maybe, if I still have the energy for that. I feel sure enough that you wouldn’t just release it for the chaos of it all. You would’ve just stolen in out the moment I walked in here. One of my least devastating haunts, if that’s what you are.” Losing an artifact would be difficult to explain to the museums expecting it, but a few white lies wouldn’t hurt them. With the insight he’s seen in there, he could drop of a child’s pottery piece and they’d worship it.
“Any reason for the drop in? Am I some sort of pariah in the demonic world?”

Watching as he offers away the statue, he almost melts in relief when they take it without immediately threatening him. The tense smile kept up to ward off danger relaxes into a smaller one that takes far less energy. Only more relief is his reaction to their new appearance, what he hopefully assumes to be their own.
“You look more comfortable, I don’t think my outfit is for everyone,” he manages to laugh, sitting on the edge of his desk and dangling his bad leg off the side. “And I don’t know if I’m immune, not a clue. Nothings happened yet, but the documentation on the process is a bit primitive for my tastes.”

“Then that’s a little closer to what I do. I recover them because people are being affected badly by them. It’s a danger marketed as a tourist trap for wannabes.” Holding the statue loosely in his hands to avoid more contact with the glass, he offers it out towards them for a moment.
“It might be safer with you than me. It contorts human physiology to horrific levels, and I’ve only got a rough idea of the radius. Consider it peacekeeping.”

“Not a common pest? I think that’s the nicest thing any entity has said to me. And that’s including sirens.” Sheepish internally, Illinois scolds himself for not finding any of the logic to the entities abilities. His family name was stamped across every piece of paper in the house. “So, do you like getting rid of pests then?”
A foolish reason for striking up a conversation, but his loneliness has started to get the better of him. “Are you interested in the artifact I just got?”

It’s a first for him to be disappointed when an entity leaves him unharmed. “You can’t just leave now, you’re absolutely fascinating. You know my name and appearance, and somehow weren’t the byproduct of a two headed fish. It is rather..extraordinary.” Illinois is buying time. Not sure on what he’s spend it on later, but he’s trying.
“Do you have your own form? Or do you have to use others to get a shape? Did I bring you here?” A fascination has started to build, even if it began in a way to save himself.

“It would be-“ Stumbling over his words, he watches the slowly distorting version of himself move far too close. Wanting to back up further as his thighs knock against the back of the desk. Illinois secures both his hands around his cane while eyeing his phone off to the side.
“It would be recovering lost artifacts, and removing dangerous ones from the public, I am not like my predecessors.” They already know his name, a worse sign than usual. “We, I am a helping force.”

“Then it can’t be yours, currently it’s mine. You’re being a thief.” Both of his hands slowly move away from his pockets to hold the desk behind him. Half of it are his own belongings tossed out from his suitcase, other half the maddening scrawls of his research. “If you’re going to hold it, be careful. It’s glass, and I’m not looking for a mess to clean up.”
Knee knocking against the cane, Illinois scratches along the desk while staring at the copy. “I really would appreciate you giving it back. If I judge by looks, we have the same motives.”

“Is it anymore?” No time to snatch it back from him (them?) (it?), he buries his hands back into the pockets of his pants. With his cane leaning on his good hip, Illinois leans forward to examine the copy. Remarkable detail, to the point he was sure it was all completely wrong. Was he hunched over that much?
Wanting to stay as confident with the unknown being before him, he quietly laughs at the suggestion. “No, no it doesn’t. It’s mine, then it’s the museums tomorrow. It was a gift to me, technically.”
