Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally a freelance model, Jung walked in Seoul Fashion Week, competed in Korea’s Next Top model, and made her international debut in 2016 for Louis Vuitton. She became a household name when starring in the extremely popular Netflix series, Squid Game, receiving critical acclaim and nominations for acting awards. She is currently the most-followed Korean actress on Instagram with over 19 million followers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though often styled by others, her personal style is often androgynous and laid back. In the left image, she sports denim jeans, a simple t-shirt, and interesting low profile shoes. On the image to the right, she sports a denim shirt with embroidery on the placket and sleeves, denim jeans, funky socks, along with brown clogs.
Tumblr media
Here she can be seen sporting a Bode quilted jacket, denim, and the same brown clogs. This look is generally unisex, but by the color palette chosen, pink mask, and silhouette, Jung makes these garments her own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to her serious, yet playful demeanor, designers tend to dress her in a range of different looks in their shows. Here on the left, Jung is seen in a wool vest and overcoat, layered with a leather dress and leather boots. On the right, Hoyeon Jung opened for the Fall/Winter 2022 Louis Vuitton Show, wearing a brown leather coat with a cur collar, grey pinstripe trousers, a white collared shirt with a yellow printed tie, and black loafers.
When announced as a Global Ambassador with Louis Vuitton in 2022, she was styled in a white cape coat with gold finishes. She is accessorized with a Louis Vuitton bag as well as slingback heels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her demeanor and aura have captured both the eyes of audiences and designers alike, pushing her into stardom. She generally stays out of the public eye, but her presence will continue to be felt within the industry for years to come.

The Vibrant World of Street Fashion: South Korea
Written by: Demi Liu, California State University Long Beach
Welcome from the World of Asian Fashion again! Let's dive into some of the compelling trends in the colorful world of South Korean street fashion!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The distinctive fusion of modernity and tradition in South Korean street fashion is drawing attention from all over the world. K-fashion is the outcome of the fusion of styles. The term "K-fashion" refers to a broad category of styles, including bold, avant-garde, minimalist, and chic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main driving forces behind South Korean street fashion's attraction are the influencers. Their distinct styles are curated and presented on social media sites such as YouTube and Instagram, inspiring hundreds of thousands of followers worldwide.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gender-neutral clothing is one of the best features of South Korean street style. It promotes inclusivity and oversized, neutral-colored clothing that transcends gender stereotypes and traditional norms. This enables people to express their style without conforming to gender norms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 90s nostalgia known as the "retro revival" is another aspect of street fashion. This look embraces 90s nostalgia with pieces like sportswear, baggy jeans, and chunky sneakers. The 90s aesthetic is popular among younger generations who want to escape from modern fashion.
Tumblr media
The potential of South Korean street fashion to express individuals through garments is remarkable, as it has developed and is set to impact worldwide fashion trends! Next week we will be exploring the celebrity, Koleen Diaz.

A Plethora of Expression: Japan
Written by: Elijah Magalong, CSULB
Welcome back! This week we will be exploring the histories and origins of several Japanese street styles, including Japanese Americana, Lolita, to a Goth style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting with Japanese Americana, Japan has often taken and refined a starkly American style. From olive military fatigues to Levi's denim jackets, Japanese passion for American made clothing began in the late 70s to 80s, consumers vying for garments that were 'Made in the USA' tagged, and from 20-30 years old, from the 50s and 60s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though imported garments would eventually slow down, Japanese fascination with classically American styles would not fade. Japanese designers would start to combine the extremely precise, detail oriented Japanese manufacturing with American inspirations. This would eventually result in the successful brands such as Kapital, Beams, Visvim, and many others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next style that has roots in Japan is the Lolita style. This originated in the 80s, deriving from the burgeoning dollhouse style that was popular at the time. Distinctly separate from the Russian novel, the Lolita style expresses "cuteness, elegance and modesty."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The style is characterized by lacy frills, bows, and light pink parasols. The Lolita style also borrows from many historical periods such as Rococo and Victoriana, which gives the look such a distinct visual to the onlooker. Lolita brands continue to thrive in Japan as well as abroad, with brands like Baby, The Stars Shine Bright and Angelic Pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last Japanese style we will be looking into is the Japanese Goth style. While goth itself is not Japanese, an Asian interpretation of the genre has manifested in Japan. Interestingly enough, the original Japanese Goth style started as a substyle of the Lolita style. It is also heavily inspired by the UK Goth scene in the 70s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goth in Japan has since evolved into its own larger subgenre, rather than a derivative of another style. This more casual evolution of the style grows as a reaction to the popularity of Kawaii and other idyllic styles in Japan. Brands that exemplify this style would include Tornado Mart, Gadget Grow, and 5351 Pour Les Homme.
Japan has a long list of other styles to explore on top of these styles, indicating the fight for individualism in a collectivist society.
Next week we will explore the street fashion of Korea!

The Ever Changing Fashion Country: China
~
Written by: Megan Heng, CSULB
Welcome back to the World of Asian Fashion! This week, we will be diving into China, specifically exploring the vintage scene and overall trending fashion of this country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Several hot styles are trending such as American Retrocore, described as “popular kid on campus” American aesthetic. The typical outfit combo includes the iconic letterman jacket, blue jeans, baseball caps, and sneakers, or a preppy aesthetic with v-neck sweaters and plaid mini skirts. Another famous trend in China called Athflow is described as “professional enough for the office” yet “comfy enough for the couch.” Essentially, it is athleisure wear with a hint of sophistication, including an oversized blazer or trench coat, paired with cozy sweatpants and chunky sneakers for on-the-go comfort. The Old Money trend is booming in China, characterized by fancy oxford shirts, tweed blazers, and cardigans, in order to portray class and elegance. Additionally, the New Chinese Style trend is currently gaining popularity with Chinese trendsetters spicing up their outfits, incorporating traditional Chinese elements, such as embroidery, silk, and qipao-inspired dresses. The Cityboy trend focuses on simplicity, combining several elements of Japanese, American, and Gorpcore in earthy tones, portraying a comfortable urban aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Streetwear is incredibly popular with famous urban areas, Shanghai and Beijing featuring dynamic street fashion with a mix of local/international taste. Historically speaking, the Vintage Fashion scene in China has been stunted due to fears of counterfeiting, superstitions, and portraying lack of wealth. However, with evolving consumer attitudes, increasing environmental awareness, and China’s Youth, Vintage fashion is perceived as a trendy lifestyle choice. Young Chinese generations today are more involved with distinct cultures, encouraging vintage consumption towards sustainability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This fashion forward country, China, is ever changing with popular trends and the rise of vintage fashion. Next week, we will be exploring Japanese fashion overall!

Sustainable Sophistication in Feminine: Grace Ling
~
Written by: Demi Liu, California State University Long Beach
This week's fashion-exploring journal featuring Grace Ling will take you on a tour through the elegant fusion of conscious living style!
Tumblr media
In 1997, Grace Ling was born in Singapore. Ling studied sculpture and performance art along with modeling before she became a fashion designer. Because of her lifelong interest in fashion, she produced several wearable sculptures during that period, which helps to explain how she developed into this multifaceted designer.
Tumblr media
"A one-way ticket to New York." Ling began studying fashion design. She worked for well-known companies like Thom Browne and The Row while she was there. During her time there, Ling learned how to make high-quality clothing, which became a fundamental component of her design philosophy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grace Ling utilizes 3D technology, CAD, and CGI to determine the precise quantity of materials required and produce waste-free products. By using 3D technology, sustainability in fashion prevents the waste of resources like labor, money, time, or facilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ling finds inspiration for her work in everyday activities like taking the train. She draws inspiration from science fiction, modern art, furniture, etc. Furthermore, Ling's designs are a reflection of who she is. As much as Ling enjoys strange things, she also wants to look sophisticated and powerful when she dresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"A sense of eccentric elegance and intelligent femininity" Grace Ling's designs incorporate elements of the sustainable and surrealist art movements.
Stay tuned for our exploration of China's vintage fashion next week!

The Barbie of Fashion: Sandy Liang
~
Written by: Elijah Magalong, CSULB
Welcome Back! This week we will be the spotlighting the Asian-American designer, Sandy Liang.
Tumblr media
Satin pink bows, Mary Jane flats, and flowery grocery bags may be what is evoked when the name "Sandy Liang," is thrown around but her rise to the top of street fashion in Downtown New York is remarkable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

From growing up in Bayside, Queens to walking around Chinatown and the Lower East Side near her parents' restaurant, Congee Village, Sandy Liang took inspiration from her childhood experiences and role models. The first being her Paw Paw, her grandmother, who continues to be a source of adoration from the designer for her authenticity and eccentricity as a Chinatown Grandma. This leopard fleece on the right was dubbed the “the hottest jacket in men’s wear” by GQ in 2019, which gave the brand its highest level of visibility at the time.
Tumblr media
Sandy Liang has since started to draw inspiration the girlhood within. She expresses several times that she is simply a "girl designing for a girl.” She embraces feminine expression through sartorial decisions such as multiple "girly" motifs such as flowers, hearts, stars and anything you would find in a girl's diary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
images from: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/fashion/designers/a42842431/sandy-liang-downtown-uniform-interview-profile/
Her garments mix practicality and a whimsical way of dressing, always designing with the mindset that women may be able to wear her clothes on the subway, no matter the occasion: going to work, playing sports, or anything a woman wants. Her most recent collection emphasized this concept of a female uniform, the dress: the first girl is at prom and the second is a girl getting up from a dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Successful collaboration after successful collaboration, Sandy Liang continues to push the zeitgeist instead of being lead by it. Combining both pragmatism and femininity allows women to embrace female energy in their contemporary lives that blur into androgyny. Sandy Liang's juxtaposition of power suits with bows and lace dresses with hiking shoes continue to draw in women who are strong, capable, and in touch with something that connects her audience even before they purchase her clothes: girlhood.
Next week, we will visit the esteemed designer, Grace Ling!
