Why The Genderswap Is The Best Thing About Warriors
Here's another post on The Warriors genderswap because Iām still not over how good it was!!!
You've got to understand that changing the Warriors to women was a sacrifice. No matter how good a choice it was, it alienated a lot of the people who would otherwise be obsessed with it.
Warriors is already a cult 70s movie - it doesn't have a huge fanbase. Making the main characters women basically alienated that entire fanbase. Because Warriors is very much a movie about masculinity.
The fans liked it because it was about masculinity, and masculine themes (courage, honour) done masculine-y.
You can find megafans of the movie on reddit or tumblr, who are very much annoyed that the story is no longer about men being men. The story isn't the same anymore, and they aren't interested.
But the change wasn't made without reason.
Lin Manuel Miranda previously thought it was impossible to turn the Warriors into a musical, despite it being one of his favourite movies. The thing that changed his mind? The genderswap.
The Warriors album was made because of the genderswap. Lin thought it was the only interesting way to tell the story in the modern age - and you know what? He was right.
Everything just hits harder when they're women.
Orphan Town and We Got You are hilarious because they're women.
Turning a male/female seductions on their head. Male seduction is a k-pop Ballad about being a nice guy? Genius.
Moments like Call Me Mercy and Park At Night are empowering and emotionally charged because they're women.
Mercy looks at the Warriors and for the first time in her life sees women that have empowered themselves, and drops everything in her life to join them, because she wants to feel like that too.
Ajax sees a catcaller sexually harassing all of her friends and thinks "I need to teach this guy a lesson, because no one else in the world will ever do that"
The story feels more intense - it feels scarier.
On some level, every women is afraid to walk home at night, and Warriors is just that feeling elevated to a musical. The threat doesn't just feel more real - it feels intimately relatable.
The genderswap was heavily inspired by gamergate. Warriors is now a story about women not being believed, being falsely accused and taken advantage of.
But the story's moral still ends up being that these women need to keep their pride, need to keep pushing on. Through everything they still hold their heads high.
God it just works so well.
Re-intepreting Luther into an incel-type villian who wants the women out of his "space"? Brilliant. Turning the controversial Swan/Mercy romance into a lesbian love story? Fantastic! Shifting the story from being about courage, to being about the courage to hold your head high even after being attacked with gender-charged abuse? Life-changing.
The emotions just... work better when they're women. Reversing the genderswap now would be taking the story's teeth away.
You can't reverse time now guys!
Much like Warriors evolved the book - the musical evolved the movie. The dudebros are scratching their heads - angry they can't relate to the musical, without realising that they aren't supposed to.
Warriors is no longer a story about masculinity. It's about femininity now and I couldn't be happier.

what if your doppelgƤnger wasnāt evil it was just a person. what if your doppelgƤnger wasnāt trying to replace you it was just trying to learn to be a person and you were the best model it had. what if your doppelgƤnger looked at you with your eyes and said with your voice that it just wanted to be loved. what then.

Hot take but I really do think that some of yāall need to consider how/why/when/how often youāre making fun of straight people for being straight
I do it too, Iām not going to pretend I donāt make jokes about the hets, or the down with cis bus, or whatever
But I recently befriended a cis, straight dude and I have watched him be dismissed, degraded, and unambiguously insulted for the perceived ācrimeā of being straight ā all in queer environments where he is allegedly ācompletely welcomeā and surrounded by āfriendsā
This guy is not a toxic person! But I have seen him be made to feel so small and like his comfort and safety in those spaces are conditional on his silence and acceptance of being treated like a human dunk zone, and I think that some of yāall have had so much shit from straight/cis people that the second you feel like youāve got an inch, you want to luxuriate in the perceived catharsis of bullying someone whoā actually ādoesnāt deserve it
And until he very, very carefully mentioned to me in private that it makes him feel bad, I didnāt even clock that I was involved in doing that, that it had become so instinctive for me to make casual jokes like that, and thatā well meaning or otherwise āI had been contributing to an environment that made someone I really really like feel like shit
So, I dunno, I think maybe some of yāall should think about that too

Hey, I'm glad ya liked my TB04 review! Your takes are interesting even in the parts where I don't agree lol - though tbh while I doubt I'll change my own stance much on a rewatch, I'm not all that happy with the writeup I've done there. I was a bit too caustic and the text was riddled with typos! So if I ever do a new meta post on it I'll letcha know :>
Hey, no worries! If you were to pick one point from my view that you agree with the least, Iām curious as to what that is

Thunderbirds has been a big thing in my family, so this movie holds a very special place in my heart;
I completely agree with pretty much everything youāve said, itās a pretty poor script with sloppy characters and I do absolutely hate their disregard of the main tract bros, basically making them cocky douchebags. There are may aspects of it that make it a bad movie - I also hate Transom the nerdy lady sexually harassing Brains, and the ford news š¤®
But, all that being said, this remains one my favourite movies of all time, due to the simple, mindless joy it brings me (and a bucketload of happy nostalgia)
Out of the characters, Ben Kingsley is great as the hood but the characterās writing is meh, kinda just basic villain stuff. The amazing late Bill Paxton as Jeff was a great choice, he plays him so well that I wish we got to see more of him (the plot lets him down a bit).
Out of the three main peeps, Alan is a pain in the arse but at least he has an arc - tintin is just there for her connection to the hood and to be Alanās love interest (she does have some cool moments tho), and Fermat is, uh, a nerd. Jk I actually kinda like Fermat heās quite a strong character even if he has his dumb moments
LADY P AND PARKER are by far the best characters in the whole movie; they have great boss/butler chemistry and their characterisation is brilliant. Ron Cook looks a little bit like my late grandfather so he always makes me smile. I love how penny used her feet to operate the TV/computer in her huge bathtub - such a ridiculous idea but very funny. Also love the bit where sheās changing outfit and saying a bunch of things that make sure you know sheās rich
TECH: I actually love the tech in this movie, it has such a grounded feel to it whilst actually being amazing CGI for 2004ish. The thunderbirds are cool, with all of them apart from TB2 being welcome upgrades from TOS. I really love the graphical style they went for with the interfaces in all this ships, itās complicated but pleasing. One of my fav moments is when brains is forced to unlock the command and control centre and we get to see its full transformation, itās so goddamn cool
But my favourite tech moment is FAB1ās liftoff: the amazing music combined with the carās (weird but) futuristic design, and the sfx of Parkerās viewfinder will never not give me chills. Then the cool transformation and liftoff are just awesome. This scene will never not make me smile :D
The best scene of course has to be the old rig scene, allowing us to see some actual Thunderbird action, which a more faithful adaption would focus much more on. I really like Scott in this scene! Also when they show off on their way home is funny
Lastly, the music: done by the amazing Hans Zimmer and Ramin Djawadi, this score is a regular on my soundtrack playlist. I love the use of the original theme, its variations, and the new themes made just for the movie. The synths add the futuristic vibe. Oh and course how could I not mention the busted song, which has the same amount as nostalgia as the film for me :D
My recommendations of tracks from the score: International Rescue, You need to grow up, Canāt wait to be a Thunderbird, TB3 takeoff, Thunderize!, and F.A.B - all the other tracks r still great too.
Thanks for maybe reading!

Thunderbirds (2004)
A review by me, CutCat! This is 8-ish pages long!

Spoiler for the end of the film warning: Alan is in International Rescue. What a twist!
Totally Turbulent
Soooo, Tbirds ā04 is one of those Infamous Adaptations, at least among those who enjoyed Thunderbirds (ā65) and of more recent times, Thunderbirds are Go (ā15). Itās one of those Bad Live Action Adaptations to a near sacred property, making it dubious contemporaries with Dragon Ball [Evolution], Avatar [The Last Airbender] and suchlike.
But wait, is it really That Bad?? Why is it as divisive as it is? What caused the film to be the way it is, and quite unpopular at that?
First Iām gonna make a long story very short by saying that a Live Action Thunderbirds movie was on and off production for many years, and that the script we ended up with is apparently better than another one that was pitchedā¦ but there are reports of cooler scripts further back that never made it, for various reasons. Itās almost a story of itās own right but Iām only going by 2nd hand information at best, so Iād rather just link them at the end for Additional Reading if yāall felt so inclined.
With that out of the way, we have the Takes from the Andersons to look at. Sylvia had a very favourable reception to it:
āI felt that Iād been on a wonderful Thunderbirds adventure. You, the fans, will Iām sure, appreciate the sensitive adaptation and Iām personally thrilled that the production team have paid us the great compliment of bringing to life our original concept for the big screen. If we had made it ourselves (and we have had over 30 years to do it!) we could not have improved on this new version. It is a great tribute to the original creative team who inspired the movie all those years ago. It was a personal thrill for me to see my characters come to life on the big screen.ā
Whereas Gerry had a considerably blunter response at the opposite end of the scale:
āthe biggest load of crap I have ever seen in my entire life.ā
As for me, a mere fan of predominantly the TAG series with limited but fond memories of the 90ās TOS reruns, Iād been inclined to ignore it and write it off as a DBE or TLA lost cause. But the combined effect of me deciding to check out unpopular media for myself, namely Dragon Ball GT and the live action Super Mario Bros. movie, and thoroughly enjoying both; and the other effect of TAG finishing but my fixation reawakening with the need to consume More, I dived deeper into the fan base than I had dared to before, in which I found more reasons to watch it and make up my own mind fairly.
Find out what I thought, and a review of the movie itself, below the Cut! ā
Keep reading
#thunderbirds 2004#thunderbirds#thunderbirds tos#thunderbirds movie#movie review#i care so much about tbirds so i had much to say#ok maybe I like it too much#if they made a new movie with the 2015 aesthetic and characters I would literally give them all my money

You know what's funny? Dennis actually can learn lines, he just can't learn HIS lines. In Peter Pan, he defaults to Chris's line after losing his assistance. In Christmas Carol, he's delivering Scrooge's lines along with Chris without skipping a beat, but can't remember the line 'no' without it being written in front of him. In The Trial, he knows both the lines Vanessa is supposed to say after him, as well as Robert's. If you gave Dennis a script he would probably be able to recite the whole thing apart from his own characters.

I know everyone in the fandom is very Anti ward but uh.
I love him. He's so fucking funny it's like he didn't like them but somehow COULD NOT stay away from the team. He spent months being like "skye please forgive me I can tell you where your father is š„¹" and the entire she's like no and shoots him or tells him to jump. AND THIS MAN DOES NOT STOP. WHEN WE THOUGHT HE DIED? NOPE HIVE. but like not the same unfortunately. If we could have had him pop in and out of the show throughout either helping (to work towards his own gain) or being an opponent i would have been happy. (Like for example finding out he brokered the deal to exchange the Inhumans for the whole future space arc)
