Abandonment, Enthroned. {Part 6}
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.
Summary: “Maybe you were right to be anxious.”
Pairing; Wanda Maximoff x Fem!Reader
Warnings: This is a bit of a darker fic, but nothing too dark.
Word Count: 1.7k
A/N: I have no excuse for how late this is. i’m sorry i’ve been mia for a year. life’s been.... crazy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sun was high in the sky when you came to - it peeked through the window and between the curtains. You felt the soft duvet over your body, but you didn’t remember coming up to your room. As sleep relinquished it’s hold over you, your memories slowly filtered back.
Peter. The bear. Wanda.
Fuck, Wanda.
You remembered pouring your heart out to her at the kitchen table, and that cold feeling of fear that had cut through you.
You remember Wanda, the profile of her face in the passenger seat. You sat up, head heavy from not sleeping enough, and feel the weight of another person’s arms fall away.
“Good morning.” she said, and for a moment, you imagined a world before everything fell apart. What would it have been like to have met Wanda when everything was normal? Would you have ever even met her?
You swallowed down those thoughts.
“Good morning,” you replied, “what are you doing in my bed?”
She laughed softly.
“You said you wanted me to stay, so I stayed.”
Her lips twitch into a gentle smile. It astounded you that only a few weeks ago, Wanda was a soldier with the Militia. How could someone who was so sweet and good to you even associate with a group like that?
“I’ve never slept next to another person before,” you whispered. “Not... soundly.”
Her lips parted for the stuttering breath she takes. Was your honesty too much?
“I’m... glad I’m the first,” she responded, voice just as quiet as yours.
“You’re full of firsts for me,” you laid back down, eye-level with her. “I’ve never trusted anyone to stay here. Never stabbed anyone before.”
Wanda laughed.
“Well, I hope I’m your first and last for that.”
Your chest tightened, and words tumble from your mouth before you can stop them.
“I want you to be my first kiss.”
It felt foolish to say. Those words alone silenced the room, stilled the air. Wanda’s eyes widened fractionally, but she did not recoil.
You reached out and brushed a lock of brown hair from her cheek. Her skin was warm.
“Can I... please?”
She nodded, eyes fluttering shut.
Your heart hammered against your ribs as you lean forward. you almost wished that Wanda was taking the lead.
You pressed a kiss to her mouth, tentative, unsure.
With both your mouths closed, you almost felt nothing. Just soft pressure. Wanda’s eyes open and you can see the light brown kaleidoscope of her iris, refracting in the morning light.
What do you do next? When you leaned in again, Wanda’s hands come up to touch your cheek, your neck. More gentle pressure. The blanket fell away, letting you move closer to Wanda; you wanted the closeness. Just being next to her was enough comfort.
Wanda’s tongue darts out to brush your bottom lip - you jerk in surprise, but don’t pull away. It was easy to follow her lead. Open your mouth, little by little, let her discover you. When Wanda licked into your mouth, you gasp. She swallowed up the sound.
Your bodies move automatically; Wanda sits up, straddling your thighs. Her lips barely left yours as she went. You were forgetting to breath, too overwhelmed by it all.
“Easy,” she murmured, pressing a hot kiss to the corner of your mouth. “Want to slow down?”
You shook your head.
She chuckled softly.
“Okay, okay.”
Just as Wanda placed a kiss on your neck, a quiet thud came from downstairs. The sound stopped Wanda too.
“You heard that, right?” you asked.
“Yeah.” She panted, out of breath. “Peter?”
“Came from downstairs.” Maybe he had woken up already, you did not want to assume.
You carefully maneuver out from under her and grab your sweater.
“I’ll check it out.”
“Wait,” Wanda catches your wrist. “Give me a minute, I’ll come with you.”
“No, stay here. You’re still injured.”
“Barely.”
“Just stay. It’s probably nothing.” even as you said that, your stomach clenched nervously.
The euphoria from before was draining away. You crept down the stairs; no lights were on, the curtains and shutters were still drawn. No one was there.
You went to the kitchen - Wanda might need another pain killer.
Standing in the door that led to the backyard was an extremely tall man in all black clothes.
You’re stopped in your tracks, unable to move when he spots you. It takes you a moment of neither of you moving to recognize him.
“I thought I told you to come back later.” you said, trying to keep your voice even.
The man, the Winter Soldier, tilted his head.
“It is later.”
So he spoke.
Was that a joke? What the fuck? The Winter Soldier joked?
His voice was rough. You tried not to panic, not to freak out, but that was becoming harder and harder by the second.
“How did you get in?” you asked, taking the plates to the sink. It felt wrong to turn your back on him. “Did I leave a window open?”
“This place...” he said, “is not as secure as you think.”
You scoffed.
“I’ll try not to feel offended by that.”
The man did not smile. He merely watched you.
“So, what do you want?” you prompted. “What do you need?”
He shook his head, strands of long matted hair flicking water.
“Don’t need anything. I’m here for you.”
“What the hell does that mean?” How fast were you? could you run? Barefoot and in your pajamas? Could you shout to Peter and Wanda?
Footsteps halted your conversation. Wanda appeared in the doorway, brows furrowed in concern. She must have heard your voices from the hall.
“Wanda,” you said, taking a deep breath, “we have a guest.”
“Jesus Christ,” she whispered.
“I’m not here to hurt you, I’m here to warn you.” He raised his hand to calm her, but Wanda’s eyes are still wide with worry. “The Militia are moving in. They’re a few days out from here.”
“What?” your gut twisted. “I didn’t hear any reports over the radio, it’s been silent.”
“They know people listen in. They’ve found a new frequency to broadcast over,” the soldier said, moving to sit at the dining table. He looked exhausted. “Anyone who’s been reporting in radio towers or bases in the area have been eliminated.”
A couple days out; you needed more time to prepare, to fortify the house, to defend yourself.
“Why do you care?” You asked, “why help us?”
“You said I could stay.” Ice blue eyes meet yours. “So here I am.”
You looked at Wanda. Was there time to defend the house? No.
But there was time to run.
“We need to pack.”
----
“Where are we going?” asked Peter. “I just got here!”
“We need to go West,” you said, zipping the bag shut. According to the Soldier, you had three, maybe four hours before the Milita reached the house. “We can’t go east since it’s desolated, so we have to go west.”
“But what about the farm? What about your life here?”
You did not want to think about it; the mere thought of abandoning your home made your chest ache. You had lived here for so long, you had foolishly planted roots in a time where nothing was ever certain, where nothing was permanent.
Now you were reaping the consequences.
“Peter,” you said instead of answering, “go down to the basement and fill this with whatever food will fit.”
You pushed an empty crate into his hands.
“They might pass by the house,” he said hopefully, but you could see the despair in his eyes. “They might not even see the house.”
You smiled sadly.
“That would be nice, Peter. But you know that isn’t going to happen. They’ll take the house and us with it.”
There was too much to do. You needed to release the animals; they can’t come with you and you couldn’t dream of leaving them to the Militia, so you opened the gates and let them roam free, into the forest.
You and Peter worked to round up as much rations as you could; canned food and jugs of water. Wanda gathered first aid, blankets, your radio, maps; whatever she thought was needed.
The Winter Soldier stood outside, listening. It unnerved you, but the idea of ordering him around made you feel uncomfortable.
“Here,” Wanda came into the kitchen where you were stuffing one last crate with canned vegetables and tuna. She had a backpack in her hands. “This one’s filled with the rope, wire, and fishing hooks.”
“Good, bring it to the truck,” you said, “did you leave anything upstairs?”
“Nope, I’ve got everything.” She was wearing the jacket she’d worn the first day you met her. Where had this morning gone?
The soft kisses, the gentleness...  all replaced with composed panic.
Wanda. You tried not to panic when you thought about her. What would happen if the Militia find her, alive and well when she was supposed to be six feet under? you shuddered at that. You thought of this as she walked out the back door.
Peter rushed through the kitchen with all his bags.
“You good, Y/N?” he asked, out of breath.
“Nearly done. Load up your truck.”
He does as you said to; good kid.
You wanted to say goodbye; to the house. But was there time? The house that had protected you for months, sheltered you, kept you warm... this was goodbye?
You catch a glimpse of the living room from the kitchen doorway. Wanda had danced with you there. Up the stairs, she had kissed you in your bed.
The back door swung open Winter Soldier grabbed your arm.
“They’re here,” he said softly. “We must go.”
You grab the crate off the table and let him drag you out the door. It felt wrong to leave the house unlocked; unguarded
Outside you heard voices. Shouts.
“Get to the cars.” You tell Peter, who’s frightened stiff a few feet from the back door. “We need to go now.”
A break in the distant tree line stole the breath from your lungs.
People - soldiers - were coming towards the farm.
The Winter Soldier spoke.
“Too late.”

The ride back was terse.
Peter followed behind your truck, Wanda sitting next to you with the machete still tight in her hand. Your own hands gripped the wheel tightly. You were afraid that you wouldn’t be able to let go.
The moment you twisted the key in the ignition, Wanda had turned to you and asked in a calm voice. “Do you know if he was followed?”
Immediately, your chest tightened. “No. I don’t.”
“Did you use secure channels?”
“Of course we did-”
“Did you change them every night?”
“I’m not stupid,” You snapped. It wasn’t Wanda who frustrated you, it was the uncertainty of being followed. You had been safe, but there was always an element of unknown that could come back and bite you. “I knew what I was doing. Believe it or not I survived just fine before you came along.”
Wanda had sat back. “I’m just covering all the bases; no need to be so sensitive.”
“We were as careful as possible.”
“‘Careful as possible’ doesn’t ensure anything.” She responded coolly.
“Why do you care if you’re going to leave?”
That stung. You could feel the sting when the words hit Wanda.

Now you sat in silence, staring straight ahead, driving back home while simmering in subdued anger. The idea of welcoming another stranger into your house make your stomach flip. So much had changed over the past weeks, you were scared for the future. The good mood you had been in after looting the town. You thought about Wanda’s questions.
“Wanda,” you said quietly. “I get that’s you’re upset, but if I drive back to the farmhouse, someone could follow us and know our location. If we stop for the night, we could be ambushed, eaten by bears, or... or...”
“Hey, calm down.” Wanda said just as softly. “What are you asking me, Y/N?”
You swallowed. “What do I do, Wanda?”
“We go back to the farm.” She looked over, trying to reassure you. “Then we wait on alert for the next week. Just in case.”
“Just in case,” you agreed, pushing your doubt away. “I’m... sorry for all of this.”
She turned to you, and you could feel her eyes on you. When Wanda didn’t speak you kept going.
“I’m sorry about inviting a total stranger into the house, but... you don’t know what it was like when I was alone,” you said. “Day after day... there were times when I thought I was the only one left. That stupid radio was all I had for months, and when I found Queens, or, Peter, I cried. For the first time in years, I had a friend. Someone I could talk to without being afraid that they were going to kill me or hurt me.”
“You needed him,” Wanda whispered.
You nodded, gripping the wheel even tighter.
“I needed him. I still do.”
And I need you.
The thought punches its way through your mind, but you don’t let it get far.
Thirty minutes later, you pulled into the long driveway, mouth dry. Before you could cut the engine, Wanda rested her hand on yours.
“Y/N, if you said you were safe on the radio, you were safe. I’m not trying to scare you into worrying.” She said. “Don’t let it control you. This is still your house, so you make the decisions.”
She might as well have said don’t let the looming thought of being attacked in the night by a group New Alliance Hydras control you. It’s not like that constantly pervaded the edges of your thoughts every night before you slept and when you woke up.
Instead of saying that, you nodded, and turned off the engine.
“Peter,” you called to him as you jumped out of the truck. “Can you help us move these into the house?”
You were referring to the bags of food and supplies in the cargo bed. The three of you made multiple trips back and forth from the house to the truck. Feeling the weight of each bag helped soothe the knot of anxiety that coursed through you so aggressively.
Once finished transporting, you stood in the kitchen with Wanda and Peter.
You turned to the young man. Peter was older than you anticipated, with wavy brown hair that was slick with dirt. “You must be exhausted. Do you have any other bags?”
“No, just this.” He gestured to his single backpack, slung on his shoulder.
“I’ll show you to your room. There’s a bathroom for you to take a shower and freshen up.”
He looked so relieved, you smiled. “Thank you, North. Thank you so much. I can’t remember the last time I had running water.”
You sniffed.
“I have an idea.”
You saw Wanda rooting through the liquor cabinet as you stalked up the stairs. Once out of earshot, Peter spoke.
“Who is she?” He asked softly. He sounded curious, not confrontation.
There was hesitation that Peter detected. “Y/N, what is it?”
“She was a member of the New Alliance,” you said carefully. “But she defected.”
Peter noticeably tensed. “She was a Hydra?”
Hydra was a nickname created by the Protectors. All that time in the East really seasoned Peter’s vocabulary.
“Yeah.” There was no way to sugar coat it, but you didn’t want scare Peter off. “She was. I found her in the forest after she deserted and I... I stabbed her, it wasn’t bad!”
Peter’s eyes widened in complete surprise as you rushed to placate him.
“We worked it out! Don’t worry!” you said.
“Okay, okay,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “Glad to know my two roommates nearly killed each other.”
“Hey, I am not your roommate, I’m your landlord.”
You chose one of the bigger rooms for Peter, right next to yours and close to the bathroom. He nearly squealed in delight when he saw the double bed and massive windows.
“This is amazing!” he gushed, flopping down on the soft duvet before you tell him not to. “This bed is so big! And the lights really work! How did you find this place, Y/N?”
You wince. Now isn’t the time to bring that up.
“Get cleaned up and rest. I’ll make you something if you’re hungry.” You turn and left, calling out behind you.
“I’ll introduce you to Goat tomorrow!”
----
“I’ve decided I like him.” Was the first thing Wanda says when you come downstairs.
“Oh yeah? Why?”
“Because he’s still a sweet kid despite everything.” She’s reclined on the couch in the living room, long hair tossed over one shoulder. “He must have seen some horrible things out there but he’s still smiling and laughing. He’s like a puppy.”
You laughed, but it’s more like a scoff.
“And here I thought I’d have to convince to you to let us keep him.” You went to the kitchen in search of bread for toast and some sort of canned fruit to add nutrition. “I’ve spoken to him long enough to know he’s a good kid, so we don’t have to worry about it.”
“I never said I was worried.”
“Yeah, you did.”
“When?”
“In the car, Wanda. Like, an hour ago.”
“I’m worried about the Militia, not this kid,” she corrected. “Jeez, Y/N, get it together.”
You turned and looked at her for a moment before rolling your eyes.
“This is what I get for taking in a stray.” You muttered, but Wanda clicked her tongue.
“I heard that.”
After you put together a simple toast with a side of fruit cocktail, you went to Wanda’s side, tentatively picking at the edge of her shirt to check her stitches. At this point, she didn’t even flinch or stare at you - instead, she raised her arm as you checked.
“Still needs time.” you said, letting go of the hem. “I hope all the excitement didn’t strain you too much.”
She rewarded your concern with a smile; a bright, full smile, and you hated the way your heart tripped.
“Nah, I’m a trooper. Nothing a little sleep or scotch won’t fix.” She hummed.
Trooper. Yeah. A trooper.
“Don’t drink tonight,” you hate how much you sounded like a mom, but it needed to be said. “Now that I’m all freaked out about potential safety breaches, I need you on your best.”
When you tried to leave, a hand caught your own and pulled you back.
“Hey, come on.” Wanda led you to the couch so that you could sit next to her, leaning into her unwounded side. “You can relax for a minute, right? Take a deep breath. Tonight was successful despite the grizzly bear.”
She was right - it had been a good night, what with all the food and supplies they found, and Peter’s arrival.
But something in you wouldn’t calm down; the conversation you had with Wanda in the car was still so present in your mind.
Why do you care if you’re going to leave?
You wish you could have snatched back those words. As irritating as Wanda was, the thought of the house being empty made your skin crawl. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad because Peter was there now, but even then, he might not stay, then what?
“I can hear you thinking, Y/N,” Wanda chided gently. You hadn’t even noticed that she was rubbing your arm to soothe you. “Whatever it is, let it go.”
“When are you going to leave?” You asked quietly.
her hand stopped.
“Huh?”
“I- nevermind. It’s nothing.”
“No, it’s something.” She looked at your face and for once, your could meet her eyes. “Why? Do you want me to go?”
“No,” you said quickly. “Actually, I... God, this sounds stupid, but I’d like you to stay as long as you’d like.”
The words tumbled out like water from a broken cup, but when they were out, your chest felt immediately lighter.
Wanda put the pieces together.
“You want me to stay?”
It sounded so emotional and lame when she said it “Well... yes. But don’t hold it over my head as if I’m begging you to stay!” You snapped, standing up abruptly. “I know you’ll get yourself killed out there, or at least stabbed again, so if anything I’m doing you a favour.”
Perhaps it was your sudden change in demeanor, or the idea of getting stabbed again, but Wanda let’s out a sharp, bright laugh. Her shoulders jumped and she threw her head back.
“Okay,” she agreed, grinning up at you from where she sat. “I’ll stay. How much is rent?”
“Will you help me with the farm?”
“Of course.”
You looked down at her, taking in the lean curves of her cheekbones and the tiny moles under her eyes. She was so beauti-
“Help me around the place,” you decided, smiling right back. “Then I’ll consider your rent paid.”
Wanda stood up at that, and before you could push her away, you feel two arms wrap around you. The closeness made you lose your breath for a second, before you registered warmth and the smell of honeysuckle in her hair from the soap you made.
You could feel a second heartbeat through her chest, and you knew that she could feel the steady thump of yours.
Putting your arms around Wanda felt right. Holding on tightly, letting her press into you felt good. When was the last time you held another person and let them do the same?
“Wanda,” you whispered. Perhaps it had been too long, but her arms felt like security - like the Militia wasn’t real. Maybe if she held you forever, you could pretend like the world was still spinning, and half the population wasn’t dead.
But in that moment of security, you felt something else.
Fear.
You remembered how the previous owner of this house had disappeared. How his family was gone too. Had they felt so scared to lose each other?
“Y/N,” she whispered back. “What is it?”
You squeezed tighter; a reminder that this was real.
“Don’t let me go. Not yet.”
So, Wanda held on.
