Can we take a moment to acknowledge how good of a childhood Harry would’ve had if either of his grandmothers had been alive. He could’ve lived in a supportive household or a magic and support household. And you can’t tell me Mrs. Potter wouldn’t have loved raising Harry.

And Sirius would’ve been able to be a proper godfather either way. If he lived with Mrs. Potter, he probably would’ve known the Weasleys from before he could remember. Ron, Fred and George wouldn’t have had to broke the law to save him, Mrs. Potter could’ve helped with the Dobby issue.

And I guarantee both Mrs. Potter and Sirius wouldn’t have put up with Dumbledore and the Tri Wizard Tournament. (I’m rambling, I’ll stop before I start cursing JK. Rowling for not letting Mrs. Potter live).

part four! previous bits: one, two, three.

for the first few months there is an uneasy sort of detente between Sirius and Harry’s parents.

they’re afraid, but he expected that: all his life Sirius was told that Muggles would be afraid of wizards, if they knew about them.

but he realizes, very quickly, that they are not afraid of but afraid for: afraid for Harry, for his safety, for how he will fit into a world he only knows from Sirius’ descriptions.

afraid for themselves a little too, for what their warm, bright house will feel like when Harry leaves it for some impossible-seeming school that they can’t ever see for themselves. for what might happen, if he chooses to leave them behind for good.

and they’re afraid for Sirius too, though that takes the longest for him to see. afraid he won’t be able to clear his name, that he’ll be sent back to Azkaban, that their son will lose his godfather so soon after finding him.

(it never occurs to him that he is, to their eyes, still so very young. he isn’t even thirty, and they waited a long time before Harry came to them. they’re old enough that he could be their son, if things were otherwise.)

so: things are weird.

but there are consolations.

instead of crashing the ford anglia into the womping willow, harry would have crashed through the dining hall windows to make a dramatic entrance. an homage to his godfather bursting through the screen door a few years earlier.

A typical HP fic where Harry shows up at Hogwarts and acts just like Tom Riddle, the same cold voice, the same grace, the same interests. This goes on for weeks all while Dumbledore goes through a series of heart-attacks.

Turns out Sirius and Remus rescued Harry from the Dursleys and the three thought it would be a hilarious prank (and they were right).

“Yeah, that’s for tossing him at the door of an abusive household, y’ git!” Sirius bellows at a fainted Dumbledore as Remus buys Harry a milkshake.
