The six-year-old had been walking up and down the beach, waiting for her dad and Ben to return from their errands, stopping to investigate the shells and small objects that the tide brought in or that lay buried just below the sand, sometimes jumping in and out of the waves as they crashed on the shore.
It was quiet today, seeing as it was misty, foggy, and just a little bit too cold for most people to go out and spend a day at the seaside. Saoirse didn’t mind it, though. She liked the sea no matter what time of year it was.
Feeling a certain spark in the air, a pull of energy,  the little girl looked up from where she was drawing in the sand with a piece of driftwood and turned, looking behind her to see a lone man further off in the distance. Seeing as how he was the only new presence on the beach, she stood, walking up to him curiously and looking up into his face... that is, as best she could as he was really quite tall.

“Why aren’t you with the other fairies?” she asked as if the sentence was perfectly natural. “Are you lost?”

Saoirse nodded exuberantly. Clever didn’t even cover half of it, and, after a moment to collect her thoughts, she signed,
Did you see the look on their faces? and, once finished, she covered her mouth with a hand to stifle a few giggles.

«  i  think  it  was  clever.  »         a  grin  split  evie’s  mouth  –  eyes  dancing  with  laughter.  bad  publicity  was  one  thing,  but  taking  it  and  shoving  it  down  a  critic’s  throat  was  another.  barnum  had  done  a  swell  job,  if  she  did  say  so  herself.  it  was  amusing,  at  the  VERY  least.

Saoirse sighed as she walked down a Dublin street hand-in-hand with Ben. They were here with Conor getting supplies for the house while Granny stayed and cleaned house and gave Cú a bath. While it was better than the last time they were here, she was still anxious to get back, put on her coat, and go swim with the seals again.
However, she perked up instantly when what looked to be a teenage boy walked past. She just knew that the boy was a fairy, she knew it, she could feel it somehow! But what was he doing here?
He was disappearing in the other direction, and she quickly broke away from her brother, racing after the stranger and ignoring the cry of, “Saoirse! Where are you goin’?” from behind her.
Skidding to a stop, she tugged on his shirt, looking up at him.

“You’re a fairy. Like me.” the six-year-old said bluntly.

Glancing  down  at  the  vague  sensation  of  her  shirt  being  tugged,  Uma  was  welcomed  by  the  sight  of  Saoirse,  much  shorter  than  herself,  standing  close.  She  couldn’t  decide  whether  it  was  comforting  to  see  the  little  girl,  or  painful.  Someone  so  sweet  to  be  trapped  in  this  place,  never  being  given  a  proper  reason  why.
“ Nothing’s  wrong,  darling, ”  she  murmured,  bending  to  lift  Saoirse  onto  a  nearby  barrel  so  they  were  almost  height - matched.

Saoirse giggled as she was lifted, looking pleased at her new vantage point, before frowning slightly at Uma’s words. Of course there was something the matter, she was alone and looking out to the sea. Not even Harry was here.
“...Whenever I’m sad, Ben tells me a story. From Mum.” she said quietly. “And whenever he’s sad I sing him a song.” she said, before tilting her head. “...Do you want me to sing you a song or tell you a story?”

Little feet padded silently on the deck, moving toward the figure leaning on the bow’s railing.
A tiny hand encased the fabric of the older girl’s shirt, tugging once to alert her to her presence and to gain her attention. Saoirse had learned from too many times unintentionally having snuck up on Uma and facing the consequences to always make herself known when she was in her presence.
Tumblr media
“...Uma?” she asked, sweet, soft, and pure in pronunciation, even despite her voice’s underuse. “What’s wrong?” She released her grip on Uma’s shirt to hold on loosely to her hand.
