One of my favorite parts. When Raiden faces the possibility of his entire day being a lie, his boss, all he did and questions the reality, there comes Solid Snake with his brutal but effective honesty:
It doesn't matter what was real. What is real now is what counts. This is the comfort Raiden needed at this moment to not fall apart. The advice that worked.
Even better, Solid feels the ordeal might be too much and gives Raiden the choice to walk away if he wishes to.
Snake is the only one in this story that comes to respect Raiden's autonomy. Going from using Raiden to actually giving him a choice.
The ability to choose is another thing he needed. Small mercy and comfort in a situation out of their control.
