You need to move off of Google Docs!

I know some people have seen the news recently and may be doubtful of it. To the uninformed, Google Docs has started using AI to find "inappropriate" and "problematic" content, scraping your documents and deleting it. I know some people are unsure if this is real or think this is not going to affect them.

I regret to inform you that this is real.

As I was on a call with some writers and we were moving our documents as a precautionary measure, one person discovered entire pages missing that they did not delete themselves. This is happening to us, it's not a hoax or a rumor, it's happening right now. You need to move everything if you want to preserve it.

If you're a writer with writer mutuals, please reblog this so they know. I rarely write on Google Docs anymore, but I started my fanfics on there, and I would be devastated if I lost works more than ten years old because people decided marketing appeal is more important than creative freedom.

people know they can write fics, right? like... fanfic authors are not mythical beings. anyone can open a document app, write something, then publish it on an appropriate site. it doesnt have to be your personality, your online presence, or even something you're necessarily proud of.

i saw an excellent video by @/princesspendelum on tiktok talking about the commodification of fanfic, and it has me thinking... a puzzle piece thats missing from most peoples brains is that ff authors are just regular people, they can be just about anyone. i dont publish fic as often as i would like to (most things i write are for my eyes only) but i could, in theory, just...do it. there isnt an exclusive class for fanfic writers, it is a hobby.

its just strange how 'exclusive' the label has been deemed as, usually by those who do not write fics themselves. if you wish someone wrote xyz with such & such tropes, then do it yourself. there is nothing holding you back. you do not have to polish a hobby for it to be seen as important.

-> people stealing, binding and selling fics on Etsy, risking everything that AO3 has built since the Anne Rice lawsuits

-> AI scraping being everywhere and Gen Z seeing nothing wrong with using AI to "help" fanfiction or outright "write it" for them, while older fanfic authors have struggled for years to perfect the style you love

-> comments being down across the board and consumption culture being at an all time high. a fic gets 800 notes practically overnight and doesn't get a single comment (and sometimes I literally have to beg for comments/feedback on my fics when I know that hundreds of people are reading them)

-> me, grinding my teeth while pouring my heart and soul into a 40k fic that I know will be forgotten by fandom in a month or could possibly be stolen to be sold as a "novel": I do this because I love this. I do this because I love this. I do this because it's my passion. I don't want to quit doing something that I love so much.
