He hauled her up against his body, considerably larger than hers. She was furious with

herself for taking in the feel of those unforgiving muscles against her softer, leaner petite

frame. He was a tall man, standing just over six and half feet, towering her as he leaned

and bent her body back. Her neck ached from the angle due to the height differential of

over a foot. “I am not insane,” he claimed.

She nodded a few times. “Okay. Do you mind letting me go?”

His gaze now blazed on hers. “If I must.”

She swallowed hard. “I think it’s best.” Unsure of her own words, as if he weaved some

sort of spell over her.

His head tilted closer. “It’s not magic.”

She gasped, “You read minds?”

“No. I mean, your thoughts were clear in your expression,” he admitted.

“So, you read behaviors?” She was as intrigued as she was terrified.

“I believe that would be an accurate assessment.”

“You speak like you’re from a—”

“I need to learn your current vernacular.” His grin sheepish. “Language is a living thing,

changing from continent, to country, to region and to generation.”

“I suppose that’s true,” she declared. “But it’s as if you’re not from this era.”

“I’m not. I’ve already told you that. I just became human.”

She blew out an exaggerated breath, watching as it lifted his hair from his forehead.

“You have my attention. What were you before?”

His mouth now against her ear sending warmth throughout her body. “Angel,” he

whispered.

“What?!” She fought to breathe, losing the battle as she fainted.
