Me: Well, there’s my first novel, but I spend most of my time denying it exists, then there’s the finished first draft of my second novel, but it’s on indefinite hold. And I guess I’ve written two and a half drafts of that one book… then I have two other novels that are halfway through the first draft, but technically—

the first rule of writing is that there are no rules. the second rule is to save your work every 5 minutes because technology is a fickle god.

I think the most unintentionally pretentious part of me is I genuinely forget that most people do not have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of mythology and folklore. I literally just assume most people know at least the name of every Greek god. My mom and I were watching the Banshees of Inisherin and at the start, she asked "Do you know what a banshee is?" and I was so stunned because it would never occur to me to ask that question because I would never assume the average person doesn't know what a banshee is. The average person knows what a banshee is right. You know what a banshee is right. You know the names of the greek gods right. You know that norse myth where loki fucked the horse right. Right. RIGHT

writing a first draft is just me aggressively typing "THEY TALK" and hoping future me has the patience to figure out what they actually said

Have you ever worked on multiple little pieces and then looked back at them only to realize they're all basically telling the same story?… My soul CLEARLY wants to tell THAT story…I'm just figuring out the best version of it.

One of the most painful, torturous, agonizing, soul-rending parts of writing is spending WEEKS on a chapter (WEEKS, I TELL YOU!!) Only to belatedly understand that it's not working, you're trying too hard, and that it must go into The Pile.

My ember is ablaze. So I'm going to burn as bright and hot as I can and I'm going to share that fire with others so when all is dark, everyone has a bit of light.

Due to recent events, my writing will encompass more "love wins out" themes and light and hope and kindness will triumph over corruption, ignorance, and hate.

Change is just a bunch of little decisions made over time.

It's such an amazing feeling when someone picks up on something in your writing that you 100% intended but didn't think people would notice. Like, YES!! My writing properly conveyed the thing it was supposed to!!! You are so awesome for noticing that!!! I am so awesome for writing that!!! I feel so good about my story now!!!!
