His frown only grew at this .. information.   He wasn’t sure what to make of it, and turned the datastick over in his hand, rubbing his thumb against it.  This was–  a lot  to take in… and while he knew Winter was trying to help, he wasn’t sure it was something he had wanted thrust at him.  But there was no helping that now– she’d done research and he was holding the result of it on the datastick.  

“Have you told Leia about this yet?” 

“She has been my sister all my life. I know better than that,” Winter said stiffly. Part of her still felt rather defensive. Leia was her sister too, she didn’t appreciate how Luke seemed to treat things like his bond with her took precedent. “I wouldn’t tell her something like this, she’s still adjusting to the first bit of news you gave her.”

           Reaching out, Leia took one of Winter’s hands in her own and squeezed it lightly. “I’ll be carefully.” Her voice was sincere, her expression growing serious once again. “I promise.”

“Don’t you dare break that promise.”

           Leia simply stared at her for a moment, then slowly shook her head, beginning to look mildly amused. “I know you have this perfect memory and all, but really, you know the exact number off the top of your head?” A quiet laugh escaped her lips, one brow arching upward as she spoke. “You amaze me sometimes.”

“It’s what I’m here for,” Winter replied with a tiny smile of her own. “But I mean it, Leia. Be careful. It would break Mother and Father’s hearts to lose you.”

“Of course I have.” The Alderaanian princess smiled serenely at the Queen of Naboo as they separated. “Though I would be even better if that good-looking brother of yours were here too,” she added with a sly wink, squeezing her friend’s hands. Then she noticed the worry in her friend’s eyes.

“Lelila, what’s wrong?” she asked, pushing a few stray hairs back into Leia’s elaborate hairstyle. “Tell me.”

“ Winter, you have no idea how much I’ve missed you ” A moment of kindness, pure love perhaps. It felt like it had been forever since they last seen each other but it hadn’t been too long, no, they had been away from each other longer than this. Her arms wrapped around her in a long hug, chin being placed on her shoulder while she sighed softly, Winter was her friend, wasn’t she? The only woman she could trust these days.  

Leia slowly pulled back, straightening her back while her posture went back to how it usually was these days, regal as a true queen, that is what she went by. Her hands slid down from the grip she had around her to her hands to squeeze them instead while she shook her head fondly, she was sure Winter was one of her few true friends, the only person she couldn’t lose. “ You have been alright, haven’t you? ”

There was something Winter wasn’t saying.  Her explanation was a history lesson, something he could have gotten simply by going to the archives himself if he’d known what he was supposed to look for.  But she had brought up this Senator, had brought up his father even. 

There was something about Luke and Leia’s parentage that Winter wanted to talk about, and she wasn’t going to let anything stand in her way– least of all Luke’s own reservations. 

He managed to choke back a sigh– she was trying to be helpful and that was what was important to keep in mind– and gave a small smile at her thoughtfulness.  

“I appreciate you bringing this to me, Winter, but I still don’t see what this has to do with me.  I’m sure Anakin Skywalker came into contact with plenty of people, it was part of the Jedi Code to help wherever help was needed.

“So, I have to ask–” He continued, keeping his voice gentle,  “Why are you telling me this?” 

“It’s there on the datastick, but...” Winter hesitated, trying to figure out how to best phrase it. “Luke, based on the rumors, and what I found, I think it’s possible that she might have been your mother.”
