re: 2016 election
This is so similar to Brexit. People are protest voting or just not showing up because they feel SO CERTAIN that homophobic spraytan won’t win. But, then Hillary falls behind by tiny margins. Margins that would have not existed had all the third party and protest voters actually voted for a candidate that stood a chance. Your oh-so-morally-upright protest vote is going to let an overglorified showerdrain hairwad win the presidency and put the Republicans in power. And, oh, oops! Looks like Pence supports and has funded Conversion Therapy.
You have no idea what this election could cost LGBT+ people. I was so desperately hopeful a Democratic president would be able to ban the torture of my community by the conservative and fanatically religious right. I was so desperate to make sure my community, my family, and my friends would be able to be a little bit safer, even if they were in unsupportive homes. Now you’ve dashed that hope into the ground for 4-8 more years.
That is 4-8 more years of girls like Leelah Alcorn’s stories.
That is 4-8 more years of terrified LGBT+ kids.
That is 4-8 more years of suicide and terror and loneliness.
And that is only the beginning. If the Republicans keep their promise to reverse Obergefell v Hodges, that is the destruction of so many families and couples who thought they were safe.
That is the promise for transphobic legislature on a national level. It won’t be overnight, but the Republicans can and will attack some of the most vulnerable and vital members of our community.
I’m disgusted and angry and tired. Hope you protest voters are proud of yourselves.
I want to issue a call to our LGBT+ community. Band together. Stay safe. Support one another. Now more than ever we need to make sure that we fight for each other and protect one another.
If we don’t, who will?

Today, after reading to some kids that I volunteer with, a group of girls asked me, “Why do I keep changing from mixed to black?”
:(
Sadly, this issue can’t be blamed on penile, Oedipus complexes that society has grown to accept and love or even colorism, to a degree within my own community.
Firstly, I’m a black woman. Surprisingly to some and second, I’ll always be and forever will be— black. Shocking, I know. So when asked; I had to explain to meek, cultural sponge girls that soak up every and any little thing around them. Which, I don’t mean or am bothered by it, but I was taken back that they didn’t want to hear about my beloved Rainbow Fish but instead— about why my skin is the newest mood ring. And thirdly, I spray tan to solve the confusion. Now, I’ve gotten spray tans since my senior year of high school. I get them to help cover my malar and body rashes and rash scars that are sprinkled on my body. Keep in mind, I’m not knocking anyone who gets them. But some folks do go a bit too far with the exotically scary bronze to the shameful tangerine. I like to think of my tanning as getting a light sheer gloss of gold brushed on my body. Similar to your mom’s impulsive buying of a chocolate bar at the checkout. Aesthetically, I have never needed a reason to get them. But who cares, honey.
I have Lupus, Systemic Lupus or SLE, which unlike other cases because they are all different, mine mainly effects my kidneys and skin ALL over. So the tanning, for me, is to help with my skin appearance to look even, healthy and just something for me because I’m also fabulous and fierce. I don’t expect many to understand or agree because I’m already brown. But it’s my skin and it’s my body that I get to decide what I want with it and to whom I want to do it with.
To simply put it, I like my shade of me. Hell, I’m in love with my skin. But I don’t think it should marginalize what I could represent to someone. I just wish those girls, after explaining to them, we’re more fixated on reading and what makes them amazing than why my skin tone was the week’s topic of choice.
Note** I attached photos of before and after tanning to prove myself. :)
