“this can desensitize people to [x] awful thing and that needs to be considered because media doesn’t occur in a vacuum” “just blacklist it if you don’t like it”
“my country has done xyz awful things” “why don’t you just move to another country then”
…i hate that dismissive trend of responding to legit criticism with “if it bothers you, avoid it”.
like, the point isn’t “this bothers me”, it’s “this is harmful to others”, and avoiding it or ignoring it doesn’t actually change the fact that it’s harmful. the response is completely out of touch with the premise and is really just designed to shut people down rather than engaging with what they’re trying to say.
(note: this isn’t about triggers or anything like that. it’s totally okay to avoid things that are harmful to your personal health. i’m not telling people to ignore their own discomfort and engage with things that will harm them. this is specifically about people mistaking criticism of a thing for personal discomfort with a thing, and dismissively telling people that if they see a problem, the problem is actually with *them* and the only way to solve the problem is to go away.)
