alchemy's law of equivalent exchange
Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return.
To obtain, something of equal value must be lost.
That is Alchemy's first law of equivalent exchange.
In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth.
- Al, Fullmetal Alchemist
Sorry it has been a while since my last post. Here’s a quick update:
The British invasion has ended. I was up all night finishing Doctor Who. I had no idea there were so many seasons! I think I have developed a slight accent plus a plethora of English sayings! I’m a little off my trolley today… Lack of sleep I think…
At least Chewbacca was able to steal some catnaps last night!
AWWWWW!
Anyways, welcome to my new obsession: Anime!
I’ve been watching lots of Welcome to the N.H.K., Eden of the East and my personal favorite, Fullmetal Alchemist. For those who don’t follow anime, FMA has kinda got a Sam and Dean Winchester (Supernatural) vibe going on. Two brothers who have lost their parents and are running into all sorts of trouble/cases to be solved in their travels… Only Edward and Alphonse Elric are on a mission to regain their bodies after an alchemy exchange gone horribly wrong!
Having seen their misery, I guess I should consider myself fortunate to get my leg back. I’m just a little scared I think. The knee brace is gone and so goes my excuse to hide inside all day. I know I can’t go back on my word now, so in the spirit of FMA I have decided to take the law of equivalent exchange and apply it to my social endeavors.
For example: In order to obtain a social interaction, I should step out of my comfort zone and make the first contact. It could be as simple as saying “Hello” to a stranger at the video game store. In theory, this should result in a return “Hello” and Bob’s your uncle, I have created a social interaction!
I know it’s not much but it’s a baby step in the right direction isn’t it? Stepping out that front door is hard enough for me! Speaking of, I should probably try going outside today… but maybe I’ll watch one more FMA episode first.

it's elementary my dear dr. watson
I have been laid up for a week or so now with my bad leg. I don’t really mind though. My boss has been delivering Slurpees on a regular basis and keeping me company by shooting zombies with me. He’s gotten a little rusty… understandably. He and his ex are trying to work things out, so he has cut back his gaming time drastically. I think the only times he games now is with me at my house. I’m glad! He seems happier. They both do!
When he’s not around, Chewbacca and I curl up on the couch and catch up on our favorite TV shows. Right now we are on a British binge. IT Crowd, Spaced, Doctor Who, Jekyll, Sherlock. The list goes on! I try to wait to watch Sherlock for when my mom gets home from work. She is a huge Martin Freeman fan! She’ll make us some dinner and we’ll eat it on the couch together while we watch. She squeals every time Dr. Watson is on screen… It is soooooo annoying.
I love getting some time with my mom and Chewbacca, but I have been wondering how being a shut in for a week or so will affect my “social progress”. I mean it’s not like I go out to parties, or lunch dates, or shopping with anyone… but I think I may be using my leg as an easy excuse not to go outside at all, and go back to some old habits (By the way, Starbeam39 says hi!). I do have crutches I could be using and it’s not like my leg is broken. I just have a brace on it until some bruising and strained tissue heals up.
It’s kinda like Dr. Watson I guess. In the beginning of the first episode he is “impaired” from an old war injury. Limp, cane and all, he is slow going up and down stairs and gets left behind by Sherlock. By the end of the episode he has ditched the cane and is walking… and running perfectly fine. His injury turns out to be an old shoulder wound…
What made him stop using his psychosomatic “injury” as an excuse? Was it his newfound friend Sherlock? Was it the promise of adventure and danger? Did his blogging help him to leave the cane behind? Why is it that I can’t bring myself to venture out the door?!
Maybe time will tell. I have to learn to be more patient and trust in my blog for now. In the meantime, it looks like it will require some further investigation my dear Dr. Watson!
