how to write monsters that actually scare and not sparkle

✦ first rule: don’t over-explain. once you give me the monster’s exact height, weight, claw count, and dental record, it’s not scary anymore. it’s a pokémon. mystery is the muscle. a shadow that almost looks human will always hit harder than a full description of a swamp beast. leave gaps. let the reader’s brain fill them in with their own worst fear.

✦ physics should not apply. horror monsters are terrifying when they break the rules of the world we think we understand. a body folding in ways it shouldn’t. joints bending the wrong direction. silence in a place that should echo. footsteps that sound like they’re coming from the ceiling instead of the floor. once you warp reality, the reader doesn’t feel safe in their own.

✦ chasing is fine. but waiting is worse. scarier than claws, scarier than snarling—try a monster that just stands in the corner and watches. even scarier? it smiles. because predators don’t smile unless they know something you don’t.

✦ let it act like it knows you. a growl is scary, sure, but a whisper of your name in the dark is worse. a hiss of your birthday. a laugh in your mother’s voice. monsters are no longer “other” once they feel personal. they’re invasive. they’re inside your head.

✦ bonus tip: give them wrong appetites. a monster that eats flesh is cliché. a monster that eats wallpaper? horrifying. one that eats memories, so a character wakes up without knowing their own name? disgusting. one that eats reflections from mirrors so you don’t see yourself anymore? revolting.

I would tell you his height but no one can really tell beyond tall. This is because it is always changing by an inch or so. And the hands were inspired by that ai generated slop (which finally amounted to something beyond mediocre [dw I didn't use the softwares, but rather just searched online for the most shitty ones]).

and to have a deeply skeptical detective reluctantly take on the case, scoffing at every recording... until, piece by piece, he begins to realize my disappearance was anything but ordinary.

Cale is actually very sparing in the amount of love he gives.

He’s got a limited amount.

He goes to the waters of love in his heart and measured out a small amount, less than a single percentage, and he says, “This is how much I will give today. Maybe I will come back and get some more to give tomorrow.”

And then he goes and he gives it.

There is enough for Deruth and Violan.

Enough for Basen and Lily.

Enough for children averaging seven, eight, nine years, and however old they average to later as well.

There is enough for Lock and the other wolves.

There is enough for a crown prince and a Korean swordmaster.

There is enough for his enemies if they have the guts to take it.

There is enough for two men who died too soon.

There is even enough for some disembodied voices of people who died far, far too long ago.

There is enough to flood two continents.

There is enough to cover his old world, his new world, and more.

There is enough to consider giving some to some bastard gods if they behave.

The reason there is enough from less than a percentage of what Cale has is that he was cursed from birth.

All of this love is the love that he never got to give because everything he was supposed to love was taken, and every love he was supposed to receive could never stay.

He stored it all away, and now, carefully, he is measuring, trying to give very little, because he is worried that if he gives to much, it will disappear again.

So he gives very little, very little, of the love in his heart.

What he has is limited, after all.

Still, he will never run out, because it seems that Deruth and Violan, Basen and Lily, children averaging a certain age, many wolves,  a prince, a swordsman, and more, keep pouring more in whenever he turns around.

I have been listening to your music on repeat for days now and Rumi I want to say, I love you and you are going great.

Sometimes I wonder if being an idol is worth it.

Rumi paused as she sat on the couch in her and the girls’ penthouse. Did she really want to put this out on the internet? People see Huntrix as this untouchable girl band… This could ruin their image.

She glanced up at where Mira and Zoey were sitting, both of them idle and not paying attention. Rumi swallowed hard, tabbing out of Tumblr for a moment. She looked down at the markings that covered her arm, every single one of their fans assumed that they’re tattoos…

If only they knew.

Rumi thought about Jinu, about how he sacrificed his own body for her. About how he gave his soul to her. She swallowed hard, her throat starting to feel like it was closing up.

The memory of Jinu’s “death” hurt so bad. She didn’t quite like thinking about it… Her head leaned back against the couch and her phone laid in her hand.

Compose yourself, Rumi. She thought to herself. Sometimes her demon voice just kinda slipped out… Sometimes she could feel the soft, nagging pull that she couldn’t place. But she had a feeling she knew what it was from.

Finally composed, she reopened Tumblr. Rumi continued the post.

But then it’s the fans that keep me going! So it’s all worth it in the end :)

Jon, mah baby. I love this pathetic man sm. He deserves the world.

they just don't make characters like jon archivist sims. he spends an entire season having a forty episode long delusional breakdown and that's only maybe the third or fourth worst period of time in his life. he gets intervened on twice. he gets kidnapped thrice. during one of those kidnappings he spends a month tied to a chair getting forcibly moisturized by a plastic ringmistress mannequin and no one notices. he fully dies for six months but gets up again when a friendly grim reaper gives his unbreathing body a pep talk. he spends several episodes at the start of the final season so depressed that it's unclear if he even moves for multiple days in a row. the basis for his magic powers is that he is so traumatized that he begins to need continuous further trauma in order to live, which gives him the ability to explode people with his mind. he spends about fifty seconds at the top of an episode self-harming directly into a tape recorder, which is not even the most fucked up thing to happen to him that episode. he finally cried on audio for the first time in the penultimate ep and the only reaction I saw for several days after was wildly enthusiastic cheering. he's missing two ribs and he's at least 80% scar tissue by volume and the only canon information we have about his appearance is that he looks terrible at all times.
