collaborative visual essay. 

For the collaborative visual essay we picked the film ponyo, I chose the quote  w ‘The storm that ponyo causes comes from her desire to see sosuke. while the background has turned only a little dark due to the storm, the sea looks even darker because it is also affected by the presence of the minions’. so for my part of the animation Im thinking of doing a fishing boat caught out in the storm, then a wave capsizes the boat ponyo uses its powers to turn the boat back over.

Weekly Summary 11/02 - 17/02

Jekyll and Hyde

This week, I didn't manage to have everything ready for my deadlines because i was focusing on the animations rather than written work and for unseen circumstances I didn't think I was going to have enough time to do it all. I had a full draft of the script but their were so many mistakes so I went through that and tried to make that better, I also missed my final 1 to 1 with Lynsey because I was at the doctors so im not sure if my script is right but  I am pleased with the idea of the script since I have never written a script before, so it was exciting to write and see how that would turn out. I hadn't started the reflective essay yet so im going to spend most of my time next week doing that.

Mythological Bestiary

this week I finally finished the line work and most of the colouring I am happy with how it came out, but saying that I still think I could of spent more time on the weight and anticipation well I managed to fix the anticipation in post but the weight and the other all the beats of the animation was off so I wish I could of spent a bit more time doing that. I managed to finish the lip sync line work but I didn't manage to put any colour on it, I kind of liked it black and white anyway well I did a bit of colour on the headband and at the end but other than that I didn't use much but I was very happy with the movement and lip sync of the character I think I managed to do some squash and stretch quite well too but over all the animation still looks quite rough so I wish I could of done some better clean up and I wish I had utilised my time better.

On Monday, I had an individual tutorial with Lynsey regarding my script. Unfortunately i missed mine but I had arranged to meet with her next week, I had already written a draft and knew how my story will go. 

Mythological Bestiary

This week I spent nearly every day in the media lab working on my animation so I can have it ready on time. I was spending more time doing the bestiary one because I felt like that was the one that needed the most attention, I was well ahead with the lip sync I still had to do the colouring and a few tweeks still but I was confident that I would finish in time so I started finishing off the second scene of three I had nearly finished the line work and started to do some colouring.

Weekly Summary 28/01 - 03/02

Jekyll and Hyde 

this week I was just getting inspiration for my script so I was reading the book I rather liked it, so I started writing up a draft and instead of victorion London I was going to do 1912 Russia because I thought was more gothicy than London.

I am happy the way everything is going I got good feedback from john and millie, I found it a big struggle to get the movement of a bird correct so I went out and watched some birds to see if that would help, it did a bit, I also struggled to get the weight of birdman correct so I still had some things to do with that. for next week im going to look at more bird references to see if I managed to do it properly.

Jekyll and Hyde 

in our last lecture we discussed what we needed to include in the essay. Lynsey also spoke to us about the story writing and the power of the uncanny. she told us  ,Less is more, Stay close to the protagonist  Use our own fears to make it more personal, Give the reader time to feel the fear My plan for next week is to start coming up with a story and having a draft.

This week I had my individual tutorial with Millie at the time I was already ago with my animation so I could show millie what I had done and told her about my problem with animation on photoshop and on video on top of that she told me I should change it and try to animate on still images instead of video because its a lot easier. and the way birdman was going was a bit weird I couldn't make my mind up about how the wings looked I wanted to be a bit more detail but helen told me I should do a more simplistic style, so I followed her advice and changed the style of the frames.

Weekly Summary 14/01 - 20/01

Jekyll and hyde

in Lynsey's lesson this week we talked about what we should include in the essay like how we would animate the film and how its going to look like. I also learnt about the Freudian dream psychology, that the dream is a fulfilled wish and that Freud divides dreams into the details of the dream and the true meaning of the dream.

character performance

I am happy in the way my character performance is going, I did start animating in low quality at first then I mange to change it so hopefully it will come out better that was only the problem  I came across, I didn't do much experimenting with this I rather liked the rough animatic I did for it so I just started animating over it.

Weekly Summary 07/01 - 13/01

in the lecture we had with Lynsey after christmas we learnt what makes a good short film, we looked at two short films one called the change over which was 2D and and the other one was stop motion. I liked them both  Then it was stated that In order for a short film to be economical you have to start as close to the end as possible. This week I was introduced to a technique called ‘synecdoche’ which is when a film suggests the character through an action, such as Mr Chalfont ironing his trousers and his tie (Jubilee, by Graham Greene).Lynsey also explained that ‘Vignette’ is a short scene or a descriptions which captures one moment or a defining detail or even something larger. We also talked about the importance of openings in short films. At one point, we were divided in small groups and were assigned to choose four or five items from the ones that Lynsey mentioned and create a character and his backstory

MYTHOLOGICAL BESTAIARY 

Over the Christmas holiday I did some character turn arounds with the shape theory  and some style frames I also came up with the backstory of my character.

Character Performance 

this week im doing the character performance and my idea is that my character is going to be talking to another guy while he takes notes and looks confused and at the end he gets Beaton up, the main guy is going to put on a wizard hat when the audio says its a fantasy he will also grow a beard, that will freak the other guy out too.

Weekly Summary 10/12 - 16/12

On Monday, we started off with a quick quiz regarding some extreme facts about the Victorian Era. Then we talked about the main events that happened in Jekyll and Hyde chapter 1. Then in small groups we were assigned to write a short animated film using the title ‘Dr Sawbones’ in which he/she has to treat an unusual patient. After that we talked about Enfield, Mr. Hyde and Mr Utterson. We also saw a ted talk from Jon Ronson in which he explains how a tweet can ruin your life.

I have an idea on what im doing im going to be doing birdman flying around and then he sees a giant that eats a bird then goes to its rescue it but ends up killing the giant by flying through the giants stomach.

Weekly summary 3/12-9/12

 on Monday Lynsey did the introduction about are new project, we were going to do an adaptation of the book Jekyll and Hyde and create are own script for an animated short film,  the whole script and the essay will be a thousand words. Lynsey gave us some good tips on how to write the essay she told us to get inspiration  beyond the book, she then showed us some videos with films that have taken this concept, and changed it throughout the years of film.we were assigned to work in groups and write a short dialogue or monologue with a few random words, such as ‘Enthuzimuzzy’ or ‘Skilamalink’. We were also assigned to read or listen to the first chapter of the book at home.

This week, I continued on making a few more designs for my character for that project. We were assigned to create exclamation marks on Photoshop and use our creativity to transform them into characters. I also did some more digital designs for god Pan and the Harpy. Next week I will try and have some animations done.

motion graphics brief -(23/10/18)

Today we were briefed on our latest project. we are to work in groups and make a 50-60 second motion graphic, telling one of Aesop’s Fables. My group was assigned the wolf and lamb fable its about  tyrannical injustice in which a victim is falsely accused and killed despite a reasonable defence.

I sat down with my group and discussed ideas for the animation. we were going to keep the theme of the old folktale setting at the start but then we decided to change it to make it more relevant today so are first idea was going to about police brutality, but then the group decided to do it about a rapist/creep to be the tyrant. so we are going to have the story set in a forest or woodland type environment. But  it will morph from a wolf and lamb to a lady and a mugger/rapist.

weekly summary 4

This morning we had a lecture about the importance of sound in cinema and how it can make or break a film. We were showed a trailer for The Mummy, where one of the audio tracks had been removed. The trailer was more humorous than serious and showed me that different sounds can imply a completely different emotion to a scene.
