Gamefreak has confirmed in a recent press release that the new games in the Pokemon series, X and Y, will include a feature that involves your Pokemon dying. According to Gamefreak, if your Pokemon faints too many times during battle (the exact amount has not been stated), and other requirements are fulfilled, then your Pokemon will be “dead” and therefore unusable. Pokemon centers will now feature areas to dispose of dead Pokemon “to avoid them cluttering up your party”.

Gamefreak was reluctant to give further information so as to not completely spoil the many surprises that will be included in the next generation of Pokemon, but Ken Sugimori has gone on record stating that “with this feature, we are hoping to attract the more hardcore players to Pokemon and increase its market appeal”. We can’t say much else, but we will say that we are excited to see how this feature plays out and applaud Gamefreak for bringing a refreshing element of realism to the table.
