Farmers Markets

Something new I’ve discovered in this glorious city......Farmers Markets.

Fall in St Louis makes for amazing Farmers Market Saturdays.  Today I ventured to two.  

First stop was Tower Grove Park’s.  And I have mixed feelings.  I was a little disappointed in the hype that many had given me.  

I’m not sure about, but my reasoning to go to a market is for fresh produce at a great price.  I also like it because I get to know exactly where it came from, thus usually knowing how they grew it (what they used, specifically didn’t use, etc).  

TGP Farmers Market is not for us.  While there were a few produce stands, nothing was conspicuously priced and labeled.  It was frustrating.  However, there was a great selection of handmade soaps.  If you’re looking for that or raw milk, this is your stop.  None of that is for me.

Second stop:  Soulard’s Farmers Market. 

I adore this place.  Produce, handmade items, sunglasses, meats, cheeses. Beer.  Bloody Mary’s.  Live chickens for your own eggs.  All around amazing goodness. There is even a “Everything St. Louis” booth that sells items from the Hill, Imos’s Provel, and books on my favorite city.  You know I love that ;).  I digress.  I left with gourds to add to my fall decor, 5 lbs of new potatoes (red and yellow), pears, apples, and tangerines.....all for less than $10.  I’ll wait for you to pick your jaw off the floor.  

My favorite thing about this market?  The people who run the booths.  Please do yourself a favor, and talk to these people whenever they are able.  The cheese guy is a personal fave.  When you buy something from them, you aren’t funding a bajillion dollar company.  You are helping that one person pay for their kid’s tuition, or violin lessons.  Yes, please.  

Anyhoo.  Do you have a favorite market around the city?  I’m sure there’s more I need to try.  However, they’ll have to super impress me to steal my heart from Soulard.
