AI Slop: Doctor Who Edition
If you are a follower of this blog, then you probably noticed a I reblogged an image saying it was AI slop. This image to be precise:

And while this is still true (it is indeed AI slop, I will not take that back) I realized that just saying it was AI and leaving it at that is not all that helpful in the long run. Instead, I should say I should have called it as AI and then gone on to show how I came to this conclusion. So that is what I am going to do now. AI is constantly learning, and constantly getting better, and it's important that we learn how to call it out when we see it. I don't have a large following on this blog, but if even one person learns something useful from this post, then I will be happy. So, let's get into it.
First off, take a good look at this image. Notice anything? Look at how it just "is". it's got a quality to it that makes it look like it was aged, or on colored paper. Make a note of it and pin it to the back of your mind because this is a style that AI LOVES to do. In fact, if you go to this blog here, you will find images like this one:

And this one:

Notice the similarity? They all have the same look, especially that old-timey, sepia tone to them. Not to mention that these all probably used a similar prompt. While their styles may be different, they all have that piss-colored tint to them. Now not every piss-tinted drawing you see is AI, but this is a good tell in this case. ESPECIALLY since we found multiple examples.
But how about the image itself? What about this exact Martha-Doctor image stands out? For one thing, look at the background:
What is that? It kinda looks like the 10th Doctor's Tardis, but it's really muddled. Could be a random spaceship or room maybe, but it really doesn't look like anything, just kind of a mess of stuff that was assembled to look like a background. Also, is the doctor leaning against a wall, or is that part of the background? There looks to be a door there, kind of, but it just sort of ends. He could be just around the corner, but it's not clear. Thats because the AI just took whatever was mentioned in the prompt and did it's best to generate the background. A real artist would have been intentional in creating a background, and it wouldn't look so muddled.
Next, lets look at the arms:
Look at the arm in the red circle. See how it looks like an arm? We can see where the shir ends and the wrist begins. Now look at the green circle. What's going on there? it's just one large blue tube that goes on without end. If this was a real shirt, the one arm would be way longer than the other. We should be able to see both arms, this shirt doesn't make sense.
Speaking of, lets turn out attention to the purple circle. Notice anything? It looks like the Doctor has been shot, or wounded in some way, either way, his shirt is covered in blood. But again, the shirt makes no sense! It should be pulled up and over the area of the wound, but it's not. If you look at the green circle again we can see the shirt tail, but not in the purple one. Again, the shirt just kind of ends at this awkward angle where it looks like a whole section has been removed. If this shirt was real, there would be a huge part that exposes the abdomen. This isn't a case of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey nonsense, this is someone generating an image and not bothering to double check it. these inaccuracies aren't artist mistakes, they are flaws in the machine. Sure, artistic mistakes happen, but couple with the rest of the evidence seen here, this isn't the case. This is a badly generated image with no thought put into it beyond what it took to come up with the prompt.
Something I have come to notice of AI art is that it is very lazy. An artist will look over their work and check for any mistakes. An AI artist wont. They won't take the time to double check their image outside of the most glaring of mistakes, or sometimes not even that. When you learn what to look for, these mistakes tart becoming more and more obvious. And it's not hard to learn! I watched this video a while back, and I learned a ton!
youtube
I would highly recommend that you take the time to watch this video. Don't just turn it on in the background, actually give it a watch. Like i said before, once you learn what to look out for, it gets a lot easier to notice the flaws in AI.
AI is constantly improving, constantly getting better. But it's not infallible, it's not perfect. It is a machine and machines make mistakes. Maybe a day will come when AI is indistinguishable from real art, but that is not today. and if you found this post helpful, pass it along. The more we learn, the better we can call out AI slop when we see it.
This is where I am going to end it. Thanks for sticking with me this far along. I hope you learned something. I will be back to posting regular Doctor Who content soon. Peace out.

One thing i find so funny about the 9th doctor era tie-in novels is how they always either put rose in a clearly photoshopped, color-shifted version of the long game jacket
or (i think???) her Rose episode hoodie

and i think the connection is supposed to be timeline-based? like the ones where she’s in the long game jacket seem to be the ones that include jack? even though they don’t meet him until after the long game??
i haven’t read them all yet so don’t quote me, but if that’s actually what they’re doing, that’s kind of a fascinating little visual shorthand.

I dont have a ton of followers, but I appreciate the small group of you guys who do follow me. Where have I been lately? Ive been around. The blogs not dead, if that is what you are wondering. Ive just been kinds preoccupied lately.
I went to visit my dad a couple of weeks ago. I treated the visit like a mini vacation and opted not to follow my regular routine and just rest and relax. I think this was a bit of a mistake, though, as ever since coming home, I've been having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. Things like chorse, getting up on time, and basic self care tasks have fallen by the wayside, and I think the same thing can be said for the blog.
Couple that the show probably isn't coming back for a while, and I've kind of just lost motivation to post. Which is a shame because Doctor Who is like, my all time favorite show (thay and Eureka, if anyone members that) and I still really love it. Another problem i have is that I question myself a lot. Whenever I get around to trying to post something, my brain goes "does anyone really care about what you have to say?"
That's not a productive mindset to have. There are at least 20+ people who follow me who have decided that, at least to some degree, they like what I have to say about Doctor Who. So im sorry anyone who follows this blog and has been disappointed in the lack of content.
So a big sorry for the lack of content. I intend to fix this. I have a big post planned that I will be working on soon about how I think a third season could go. Plus, I'll just start reblogging more stuff. I can't say when this big post will be done, as I dont like working on a timeline, but I would expect it in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for sticking around, i appreciate it. More to come soon.

Doctors: would they agree to be President of Earth?
1-5: no way, no how
6: yes, but he would storm off after a couple hours and then come back like five years later to learn he was fired
7-8: you know what, yes, that’s probably for the best. You humans can’t take care of yourselves
9: I’m a monster, I should never lead anything
10: no, leave me alone
11-12: you know what, yes, that’s probably for the best. You humans can’t take care of yourselves
13-15: moot point because it already happened, but will take advantage of it as necessary

I didn't mind Sutekh, I actually thought his monster form was pretty cool (i like dogs), it had some creativity behind it but Omega? Just a bland, uninspired monster with a skull for a head because its "scary". Literally anyone else could have come up with a better monster design. its so basic and unimaginative and honestly it feels like RTD just googled "monster" and this was the first result, but i know that's not true because I just googled monster and the first result was literally better than what we got!
At the very least, Sutekh's appearance sort of invokes aspects of his original design. its Egyptian themed, its got red eyes, its not the greatest but at least it's not totally divorced from its source material like Omega is. You're telling me you looked at Omega's original appearance, big helmet and everything, and couldn't think of any way to incorporate even the slightest aspect int you design? It's lazy, it is fucking lazy.

If I had a nickel for every classic Doctor who villain with a top tier design that RTD2 brought back as giant CGI slop, I’d have two nickels.

It's pretty bold of Doctor Who to end on a cliffhanger when the shows future isn't the most certain right now.

Taking a quick break to state that I now understand the "I like this character better than the writers" mentality. I'm taking Belinda. She's mine now.

Its weird because when I was watching The Reality War, I actually liked it. Yeah I was a bit miffed about Omega, and the Rani dying so soon was a bummer, and Belinda being quasi-fridged was aggravating, but I still liked what I was watching.
Then I got online and started seeing all the discourse over at and as I started reading, that was when It started to upset me and make me angry like "yeah, your right, it really was that bad"!
So I kinda want to say a Thank You to the fandom for opening my eyes and reminding me to be more critical of my media, but also I wanna say fuck you? Just a little bit because I kinda did enjoy it and now I can't?
Anyways, long story short: Doctor Who is a contentious show, and I both love/hate this fandom.

It would be funny if Timelords were canonically smarter and more advanced than humans, but physically weaker. Like the burliest of Gallifreyans would still get folded by our scrawniest 95 pound weakling of a human. It would explain why the Doctor prefers to use their wits rather than physically duking it out because they know they will get their ass kicked.

I get why it upsets people, Government entity chipping its employees never looks good, but if it was Torchwood that did it, people would be all like "lol of you wacky Torchwood" or it would be presented in a more dubious light.
You know, when you work at UNIT and “abducted by aliens” is just another Tuesday, bio-chipping the staff starts to seem... kinda reasonable, honestly.
