you: snape had the most tragic death
me, an intellectual: fred weasley had his whole life ahead of him. hedwig was the lost of harry's innocence and childhood, and dobby was a free slave that was murdered by those who thought they were above him. sirius black spent 12 years in prison for a crime he didnt commit, and yet still blamed himself for the deaths of his best friends, and then died after living his time in freedom in a house he hated, barely seeing the one person he loved more than anything in the world. remus and tonks had finally found happiness, and were going to have a child and won't live to see that child grow up. the creevey brothers were underage and shouldnt have been fighting in such a terrible war to begin with but they did anyway. cedric diggory was not meant to be in a war, but he was the bravest of them all, he was kind and good, and he was thrown aside like he was nothing, but spent his last moment standing beside harry potter, ready to face an unknown enemy.

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra
I initially picked up this book because I loved Anthony Marra’s first novel A Constellation of Vital Phenomena (probably one of the best books I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone).
The Tsar of Love and Techno is actually a collection of short stories whose characters are all somehow connected to a nineteenth-century Russian painting. The stories span over a century in Russia and Chechnya with a diverse set of characters.
The first story takes place in the 1930s with a portrait artist who during the Great Terror is directed by Soviet censors to remove people who the government deems “dissidents”. His first task is to erase his own brother from all images. But one day, he is given a painting of a dacha in a pastoral landscape and with this painting, he begins drawing his brother into every painting he’s directed to censor.
His choice to do so is what connects the rest of the characters throughout the short stories.
The stories continue with more interesting characters and the connections between each story become clear as the book progresses that by the end, it seems more like a loosely connected novel than a collection of short stories.
I normally don’t read short stories, but the way these characters are all connected through this one painting of a dacha and a landscape is so intricate and as the stories progress, it all seems to fall into place naturally; it all makes so much sense.
I personally loved the first story, the idea of the portrait artist adding in his brother to every piece of art he censored. I thought of it as a subtle way to attempt to restore balance in a world he had no control over.
For fair warning, this book is devastating. It tells some of the history of Russia and its conflict with Cechnya through the different personal viewpoints of a wide range of characters. However, even though it takes place in doom and gloom (Kirovsk literally has a forest that is made of metal and plastic trees, there is man-made polluted lake, and one in two residents contract lung cancer), reading it doesn’t make you sad. There are genuine moments of happiness and humor.
Marra’s writing is fantastic. He can easily jump from different viewpoints seamlessly and the way the stories are weaved together doesn’t make you feel lost. It just all falls into place and makes perfect sense. His descriptions of the way characters feel in times of despair or when they are pushed to their limit are so raw and real.
Overall, the characters’ stories and the way they are all connected through this one painting and slowly interweave into more of a novel than just a collection of short stories makes The Tsar of Love and Techno a unique read that I recommend to everyone and Anthony Marra an author that everyone should pay attention to.
Here are some of my favorite quotes I found:
“But in rare moments-like now, as I scour the mildew from her bathroom tiles-clarity surfaces through the murky soup of daily life, and I know I have purposefully made myself into a crutch she cannot risk discarding. What I don’t know is whether I’ve done so out of love or loneliness, or if it’s this upside-down world where roofs lie on streets, intentions have lost their moral weight altogether”
“But guilt, like nickel, is a finite resource divided and parsed in so many ways”
“Hipsterdom’s a tightrope strung across the canyon of douche-baggery. He clung by a finger”
