i recognize the irony of saying someone stole from dan simmons knowing that so much of the hyperion cantos is stolen inspired by john keats but simmons is so desperately in love with keats that i give it a pass
wait. did liu cixin beat for beat steal the concept of nanofiber & using it for a lattice to block a river from dan simmons' endymion? i wonder who simmons stole it from

biggest issues:
-maximus having a kid with lucilla seems to completely invalidate maximus' entire theme of the first movie
-the sharks made me think I was watching Deep Blue Sea with the animation quality
-the repeated fight scenes where every gladiator is in a do or die situation before cutting to our main character...who is suddenly all alone in the arena, nobody in the background. Mescal fights that monkey to the death & when it cuts back to a wide shot all the other gladiators are just vibing, no monkeys or bodies in sight
-hanno being an anti rome revolutionary but he suddenly acknowledges who he is & does an about face. it's a shame, i liked "i'd rather a sword than a drop of roman mercy"
-i audibly snorted when he went back for the armor. which has been hanging there for 2 decades & is in mint fighting condition
-the 'climactic' fight had some film student quality cuts. Why are we cutting to and way from the sword hitting the armor under water 3 or 4 times????
my big pros:
-the twin emperors were the highlight of the movie, honorary mention to the senator who is in debt/spills the beans to denzel
-at least they didnt have the audacity to have someone say "are you not entertained"
Gladiator 2 really came in in the 11th hour as a contender for worst movie of the year. I winced the 2nd time someone directly quoted "in this life or the next" or "echoes"...and the 4th time...and the 7th... don't you get it? We're referencing the first movie! What do you mean depth of character or thematic resonance? Oh did you mean to say maximus had a kid & it's the prince of rome from G1? I know the script from the first one was like 30 pages & the actors were making up stuff as they went, maybe they should bring that back instead of whatever the fuck this was

fx the bear is very good because there's an episode where richie nearly fucking kills someone and faces manslaughter charges and its not even a major plot line or anything meanwhile the episode where they go home for christmas dinner is literally one of the most stressful episodes of television ever made

Jay DeFeo is best known for this monumental painting, entitled The Rose, which she started in 1958 and completed over the course of eight years. The piece consists of white and gray paints layered so thickly onto the canvas that, in some ares, the paints are almost eight inches thick. She used so much oil paint that she called it “a marriage between painting and sculpture.“
The Rose measures 7.5 x 11 feet and weighs 2,300 pounds,

i contemplate the moment in the garden, the idea of allowing your own crucifixion
everyone quotes "time is a flat circle" from true detective but my favorite rust lines stay "she spared me the sin of being her father" abt his dead daughter and "i dont like this place, nothing grows in the right direction" about the swamps of louisiana and "you should kill yourself" so much truth in this detective
