Detail with a Lactating Mermaid on a Dolphin. 1563, The Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, Italy
The entire sculpture was created in bronze and stone in the years 1563 to 1567 and a lactating woman was seen as a symbol of Mother Nature, of fertility and of health. Breast mil itself was also seen as a symbol of power.
