Self-reflection
As some of you who follow my blog might have noticed, I have used this platform lately to complete some university assignments and learn more about my digital identity and how I would like to be perceived online and whatnot.
The course I have been following challenged me to further understand what it means to have a persona online and up-keeping a blog, while battling a sense of inadequacy and self-consciousness about just how much I wanted to share about myself and my modus operandi on a platform like Tumblr. I was really surprised by some of the decisions I made when posting about these blog-assignments, especially in the wording of everything I analyzed, and realized that I can be both extremely casual and care-free as well as very academic and clever-sounding while writing about various topics.
I do not think my attitude towards social media has changed much, as I have always been quite careful about the amount of information I share with the online world and the type of content and media I consume on a daily or weekly basis on different social media platforms. Nevertheless, I have definitely learned more about the importance of copyright protected media and how effectively or not one can use tools on the internet for various purposes.
Additionally, when thinking about troubles I have had in this course, I believe the writing of a social media implementation plan and posting on this blog felt stiff and like something that was out of my comfort zone. I believe the implementation plan I described sounds terribly vague and I blame it partially on the fact that it is still only a prototype for an advanced training and work position I am currently undergoing. The other part of the blame is all me and my clumsiness with transforming ideas into reality, I guess.
Finally, as far as the goals of the course implementation itself, I believe I have met the basic criteria: I am capable of using a social media tool that is blog-like in both a casual and more work-driven manner, as well as I know how to use different tools on this specific platform to create more visually appealing posts or aesthetics for my blog that fit my personality.
Lastly, I hope to delve even deeper into my understanding of social media as a tool for enjoyment and a tool for work, thus applying the added knowledge of copyright and networking this course has given me through lessons, quizzes and blogpost assignments.
This has been Emppa, see you in the next post!

Marketing campaigns: the efficient use of social media
Disclaimer: for the purpose of keeping mine and my coworkers and employers’ identity private, the names of people and places used in this blogpost do not necessarily represent reality.
Tumblr media
General information and Target group
In the training project given to myself and my work partner, we are asked to come up with a series of events throughout the upcoming fall semester to further connect the student body of the university we both study at in a multicultural manner. To go with these events, a social media marketing campaign is needed to advertise the overall project and engage with possible visitors who wish to partake in our activities, thus me typing out the following draft and overview of the possible social media implementation plan needed for the project.
As of now the name of the project is “Culturefest”, as myself and my work partner decided it to be fitting given the aim of the activities and how these need to pan out during multiple months, instead of being a one-time event. Another idea to be used as a back-up, also in case the branding pitch does not go according to plan when presented to our commissioning employers, would be to simply name the project “The Social Club”: this mainly so it would attract people of all backgrounds without the promise of delivering only on culture, but instead just “promising” a group of activities that might involve any and all types of conversations or interactions with various types of media and people.
Project background
This particular project is part of the university’s training programs: these are for students to get a better understanding of working life situations in a school environment, and one of the main aims of the training programs is to give the students the opportunity to gain part of their required credits before the end of their studies.
In this particular training project, two teachers follow and mentor two chosen students throughout summer and the fall semester as the latter design and implement the events as mentioned beforehand. The students chosen to lead the project had to provide the school with a 3-minute video resume where they would explain why they were interested in said project and what they think they could bring to the implementation of these events. The students had to later go and complete a live interview of about 30 minutes, and already a week after this interview the project was fit to start with the two chosen students.
The planning side of this project can take place both online and offline, as it is to be done during summer months and the students working in a pair are given total freedom on how many times they would like to meet up and work on the plans and research before the first kick-off event even takes place sometime in late August. As far as the implementation side of the project, as above mentioned, this is taking place throughout the autumn semester meaning the events and subsequent marketing campaign will be active from late August until early December.
Marketing: social media implementation plan
As the events of the project are planned for multiple occasions and as they might be able to be implemented both online and offline or live-in-person, a marketing campaign is needed to spread the word and advertise or inform possible visitors of what to expect, where to go and simply when everything happens. This is where social media becomes a powerful tool and aids this process greatly, especially when done efficiently and with specific goals in mind.
The tools chosen for this specific marketing plan include Instagram, Discord, word-of-mouth (WOM) on campus, as well as electronic-word-of-mouth (eWOM), the latter via mailing lists and newsletters sent to all students on campus on a weekly basis thanks to a strict collaboration with the main student union and their resources. Instagram and Discord, additionally to the mailing lists and newsletters sent, become thus the main social media tools, as they are used to relay information and can do so with the help of images or videos or other media in order to be easily accessible and remembered.
The actual plan for the usage of these social media platforms and tools is to create weekly or bi-weekly posts on Instagram, as well as using the “stories” and other tools, to gain visibility and attract people to our events through visual media; this is done after the branding of the event is thought of and approved. The branding in this project’s case can be as simple as coming up with a specific logo, having hashtags with the name of the project and deciding on a particular aesthetic for the events, especially with colors and fonts in mind. This way the events and the marketing process look cohesive and have a visual pattern that makes sense and is easily remembered and associated with the project itself.
Additionally, Discord would be used more as the main platform to actually implement most of the events, especially if the current pandemic situation does not allow in-person gatherings. Discord is a social media tool that allows hangouts to be interactive and that can host different types of online events, be those gaming nights or randomized contests, as well as simple movie nights hosted remotely from one’s house and easily accessible to anyone with an internet connection and mobile device or computer.
Management and maintenance
In a detailed and efficient implementation plan, managing possible issues and crises and up-keeping important and positive results is key. As far as social media plans go, well, they are no different.
In order to achieve a successful marketing strategy, the possible outcomes of the use of social media needs to be somewhat analyzed beforehand; this is done by setting clear objectives for what we want our social media tools to bring as an achievement, and through the analysis of possible mishaps and issues that might come up in the implementation process. One of these issues, as an example, is the use of the social media tool of mailing lists: in order to evade possible troubles and privacy issues, the students in charge of the marketing done via this tool are to be careful with the type of information they share with all the students in the mailing lists, as names and addresses are to be kept confidential. Basically, only those in charge of sending emails to these lists can have access to the names; everyone else is to be kept in the dark.
The maintenance side of this specific project and the implementation plan of social media, is to constantly update the strategy used based on the response of people and the data gathered after each event thanks to surveys or simple questionnaires done live or online with participants. This type of data collection and subsequent analysis provides the students in charge of the project with information to build continuous strategies, contingency plans and come up with options that might affect the longevity of both the social media campaign and the event themselves positively and negatively.
