im sorry im so so uneducated about this but was there something that man did that people are acting oddly to his death?

He was a Supreme Court justice, meaning the highest court in the country. SC justices sit for life or until the choose to retire. That said, it’s rare they retire because the court is currently split very evenly among progressive judges and conservative ones, so if any of them voluntarily leave, the person that replaces them can tip the balance on the court which can change the nation in huge HUGE ways.

The recent shift to allow gay marriage nationwide is a pretty good example of how big of a deal Supreme Court ruling can be.

Anyway, justices are appointed by the president but there’s always a big rigmarole with the senate first so it’s not like Obama can just be like “this person, boom!”. Many people who aren’t interested in the presidential race will vote ONLY because making sure you have a prez who will appoint justices aligned to your thinking is more important than any other power they have.

Scalia, who died, was a notorious asshole conservative judge who ALWAYS had opinions on everything, and they were often terrible. Just last year he suggested black American students go to “slower track schools” as that would be a better learning environment for them.

Yeah, he was THAT bad.

ANYWAY, his death means one less asshole on the Supreme Court and it also means ****OBAMA**** gets to appoint his replacement which very certainly means a progressive majority on the court.

It also means is presidential election cycle is about to get REAL intense.
