Meet Charlie. He's 37 years old and currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. He was in the Marine Corps... for a little while. It didn't go well. His journey is one of self-discovery; reaching towards closer relationships and genuine community. Episode 5: Roni
Meet Veronica aka Roni. 25 years old. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She lives in Richmond, Virginia with her husband, Vinnie. On the outside, Roni's midwest upbringing may seem pretty simple: the oldest daughter to two loving parents who are still happily married today, a homeschooler, a lover of reading, writing, running and the outdoors. But, as you're about to discover, our conversation journeys far deeper than that. Roni's story paints a vivid picture of how the traits of two parents can materialize into the unique characteristics of their children. It reveals how the lineage far beyond those intimate family units are tiny threads in a fabric of rich, sometimes remarkable relationships. And how uncovering one small piece of that history can flip someone's perception of themselves in an instant. This was one of the coolest opportunities I’ve had in a long time. My day job gave me an opportunity to interview Tyler Perry for the new Boo 2! A Madea Halloween film.
Something you guys should know: The finished product you guys hear for each Whimsicast episode involves an hour and a half recording session where either me or the person I’m interviewing may have a number of mistakes and/or do overs. It’s a fairly low stress environment. We don’t rush. We talk until I feel like I have what I need. After that, theres a tremendous amount of editing that goes into making the finished product you all hear.
Going on my 5th episode of the podcast, I’d started to feel pretty comfortable with the process. But none of that could fully prepare me for this interview with Tyler.
As I waited outside the door for a 4 minute… yes… only 4 minute interview with absolutely no room for error, I could feel my heart beating in my throat; a strange sensation that I don’t specifically recall ever feeling before. And walking into the room, seeing Tyler freaking Perry in real life… it was a pretty intimidating experience, as well.
Turns out, he’s a super humble dude. And even though I was completely jaded and uncomfortable during ¾ of my time with him, I left there with a great sense of pride for stepping out of my comfort zone to do something like this.
So, I just wanted to share this with you guys. All my friends who contribute to Whimsicast, follow this podcast, and share the episodes with your friends have been so encouraging these past few months. I just wanted to share this small, personal victory of overcoming fears, trusting in the things I’ve been learning over the years with this sort of thing, and walking away feeling like it was successful.
THX Stephen
