Made a video of my time in Malaysia. Forgot my GoPro on a few of the days so unfortunately doesn’t cover the whole, but hey ho! This is my first time making a video so apologies if it isn’t great. Enjoy!

Be a walking contradiction. Be strong and soft. Be deep and lightened. Be beautiful and intelligent. Be confident and humble. Be content climbing a mountain and enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing. The world may try and classify you as one thing because that is easier to understand than a person who has a little bit of everything in them. And you may feel misunderstood for a while, but just remember your people can only find you if you’re brave enough to be yourself. There are parts of you that you have yet to discover. There is greater love than you have yet to find. There are experiences that are far beyond your imagination. And it’s all waiting for you. Life is waiting for you. So set aside your expectations and go and explore it - Allie Mitchell (at Belum Temengor) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0qnG1mHdVH/?igshid=15q0zemscriay

Walking in the jungle, walking in the jungle.. Really missing the sights and sounds of Malaysia. This photo was taken during a forest eco walk, right in the middle of Kuala Lumpur city. Even with it being within walking distance of skyscrapers, the forest was full of flora and fauna. A thunderstorm came whilst we were making our way through the forest, leading us to take the shorter route out. I wish we had more time to look out for some interesting animals 🐍🕷🐦 #malaysia #kualalumpur #klecopark #ljmugoabroad #betterfuturesglobalvolunteering #uitm #wildlife #nature (at KL Forest Eco Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Tl-P0n0Hr/?igshid=mg8crox1jsx0

We went to visit the Bukit Merah Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre and I was blessed to be chosen by Jidin for kisses and hand holding, this gorgeous 3 year old little guy has certainly stole my heart. Although many people were present he came back again and again to shower me with loves. The DNA sequence of an orangutan is 97% similar to that of our own, they are our closest animal relative and have many of the same systems as we do, such as gestation times and menstrual cycles. The only difference in DNA is they lack vocal chords, and instead produce sound with a throat sack. I know if they could speak they would ask for our help and to let their environments be. They are such intelligent creatures and deserve more off us humans, we create such dire problems for these critically endangered species and it is our duty to protect them. I know I will be doing all I can to help. If these pictures melt your heart please have a read or research into how you can help too. Deforestation and forest fires are the biggest threat to these guys, we humans should be ashamed to be the reason for the struggles they endure. #bukitmerahorangutanislandfoundation #savetheorangutans #savetherainforest #gesturzuitm #gesturz #betterfuturesglobalvolunteering #ljmugoabroad #nature #natgeo #humansaretrash @bmouif https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzx6GvTgphx/?igshid=zyelnlo32xku

Jet lag is the real mood! Back home in the UK and taking a moment to reflect on how lucky I am to of been chosen to be a part of Better Futures Global Volunteering 2019. For the past three weeks I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by positive people who have taught me so much about myself, and shown me so many things I have in my life to be thankful for. I will miss waking up to the sounds of nature and falling asleep to laughter from my newly made friends. I will miss the warmth of the relentless sun on my skin. I will miss the late nights and early morning starts exploring new surroundings. I will miss the excitement of seeing new species everyday. I will miss Malaysia. Thank you to everyone who has made the trip exactly what it was 🧡 #betterfuturesglobalvolunteering #malaysia #newfriends #opportunities #belumrainforestresort #bukitmerahlaketownresort #shahalam #kualalumpur #ljmugoabroad #uitm @uitm.official @gesturzuitm (at Malaysia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0DiGtlnevd/?igshid=1239u27hqkay6

Probably the main thing I wasnt expecting to come away with from this trip is so many amazing friendships. I now have an extended family that stretches all over the world. It was hard saying goodbyes but its definitely not forever, a lot of us have stayed in touch via social media or emails and I genuinely cannot wait to see them all again, wherever that may be. Coming to Malaysia I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do career wise, however this has been flipped on its head. I’m still absolutely mad about animals, but now I’m mad about rainforests too. Leaving Malaysia was definitely mixed emotions, excitement to see my family but with a dark cloud hanging over me knowing I wouldn’t be waking up everyday excited to explore and see my new friends faces everyday, I guess I now feel a bit homesick for Malaysia so I know I’ll be back someday!

Arriving the next day it was time for a few fun challenges in teams to win prizes, one of the challenges was blowing darts at balloons which I won’t lie, was so much fun although maybe not great for zero waste. But the absolute best part of visiting the orang-utan island was holding hands and receiving kisses from an absolutely beautiful 3 year old boy called Jidin. The way his hands felt so similar to ours, the warmth of his fingers and the gentleness behind each kiss was unbelievable. I will never, ever forget those moments.

Today we visited the Orang-utan island to take part in some conservation work and improvements. I spent the day in the infant care unit. Learning about the genetic similarities between us and them, and the medical procedures used here was so interesting. The sad part about going was of course learning more about the catastrophic actions behind deforestation and forest fires. Palm oil farming is the leading cause of deforestation for Orang-utans, but what many people don’t know is that Orang-utans are a keystone species. If orang-utans cease to exist, it signals a dire change for the ecosystem around it, many other plants and animals would no longer exist so by saving orang-utans, we are saving many other delicate species in the rainforest. So where possible, please stop buying and using palm oil so we as individuals can make an effort to help.
