here I am, trying to get people to care about a Senate race that is only 4 points apart at the moment but the national media refuses to act like it's competitive

look, I am under NO illusions about what Florida is. I am not here to tell you it's full of the best most well-meaning people who by-golly-goshdarn-shucks have the misfortune of living under Republicans, because that picture of the South is pretty rosy for reals. It's gotten more deeply Southern culturally in the last two decades especially. The Florida of my teen years when Lawton Chiles was governor feels like a very distant memory.

But look: Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a GREAT candidate. You know how Tim Walz is being praised for representing a quintessential midwesterner? Mucarsel-Powell is a quintessential Floridian, in that she's an immigrant and a Latina and she's very smart and accomplished. That is the best of Florida that so rarely gets represented, or gets twisted in representation to ghouls like Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz whose families are Cuban conservative. Rick Scott is one of the most unpopular members of the Senate.

Ron Desantis has gone too far in this state, warping our education, our human rights, our very freedom of speech, and he's done NOTHING to fix runaway housing and home insurance costs in a state that is acutely aware of climate change.

Abortion is on the ballot. So is legal weed. I am by no means saying I think Harris will carry the state, but there's SO MUCH that is really important on the ballot for me beyond that AND including it. But it's one of those funky years where turnout for the good guys will probably be higher because of the ballot initiatives and there's a lot of angry moderates in this state pissed about what Desantis did to education. So. Please consider sharing and spreading the word that there's a really important and more to the point: COMPETITIVE senate race in Florida. But if we ignore it, neglect it, don't spread the buzz and don't donate, then Florida just becomes another self-fulfilling prophecy.

Shower thoughts but the crux of the issue in Robert Jordan's work is that his thesis about gender revolves around men and women as two different but complementary entities needing to work together to heal the world.

And when you don't ascribe to that vision of gender, it's difficult to read these books as anything but a failure to even understand gender essentialism.

I love these books and live by them atm but man its gender dynamics are rotten.

one thing that was abundantly clear in that debate last night was that when Kamala Harris made the claim "I know Donald Trump's type" , she was not bluffing

she baited him expertly over and over, and he took that bait every single time

she kept him on defense the entire time. she started off pointing out how trump will only talk about himself and forced him to continuously talk about himself. A smarter person would have recognized what was happening, but trump can't help himself

everything she said about him, she then goaded him into proving her right, and he never caught on

you can tell Harris went in there with the mindset of a prosecutor, and it worked. Even her facial expressions when he was talking... you can tell she's used to arguing in a court room in front of a jury. She knows people were watching her reactions when he was talking. She framed his statements as the absurd ramblings of an old man without having to say a word

So, a comparatively high amount of states are voting on the fate of ranked choice voting this year. Missouri is voting on whether or not to kill it, Alaska is voting on whether or not to keep it, and most importantly, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho are voting on whether or not to adopt ranked choice voting, with maybe Colorado to follow.

And if you live in these states, even if you don't want to vote at the top of the ticket, I urge you to get out there and vote in favor of ranked choice voting on all of them.

Like, the two-party monopoly is a big part of the reason why politics in this country is so shit, and a big part of that is our "first past the post" system making it basically mathematically impossible for candidates outside of them to win anything beyond a local or state level.

So, if you want to try and break the cycle of voting for the lesser evil, of bipartisan cruelty towards the Global South and the country's own citizens alike, we need to change this and we need to vote on it where we can.

You know as a Mat/Tuon enjoyer I can’t stress enough how much their relationship would never have occurred without the intervention of fate and the two of them knowing that they were destined to marry. Without the prophecy and the signet ring Tuon wouldn’t have given Mat a second thought. Mat wouldn’t have tried so hard to make her like him if he hadn’t already known they would get married. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy! Their relationship is like a liger, it can’t exist outside of captivity and only with outside interference.

Rent control is on the ballot for California voters this November.

I uh, get that tumblr isn't exactly sorted by geography, but this is a huge deal.

It's a huge deal even for people who don't expect to be personally affected by it -- rent control is a protection against the poorest people living in a city being forced out, and that's just bad for everyone. When you have a city where only medium well off to rich people live, you get their service employees coming in from a suburb an hour and a half away (blech) or else you get people stacked three to a room. Or people holding down a job or three while trying to earn enough to get off the street or, well, out of their parents' place or away from the abusive partner they can't afford to break up with. Point is, a lack of housing that people can just keep living in at the same price, means a lot of bad things for society, and we probably aren't going to socialize housing within the next ten years but maybe we can get rent control back.
