But if I did, Benyomin Leiner AKA Benny Leonard is my hero :) Baruch Dayan Ha'emes. #EzRepost @boxraw with @ezrepostapp One of the most colourful, charismatic & beloved boxers of the last century died 70 years ago today in 1947. One of the greatest lightweights ever, he held the championship for 7 years. His bouts against Lew Tendler are classics of ring generalship & showcased Leonard as one of the 1st true main card draws fighting before over 58k spectators at Yankee Stadium. Leonard was also a patriot, participating in the war effort for both WW's. He retired early at the behest of his mother but stayed in touch with the sport. While refereeing a match in Manhattan, Leonard suffered a heart attack. He clutched his chest, fell against the ropes & slumped to the canvas. He died in the dressing room that night. Power. #EzRepost @boxraw with @ezrepostapp Arturo 'Thunder' Gatti was born on this day in 1972 in Cassino, Italy. At a young age, he and his family emigrated to Montreal, Canada. Gatti won world titles in 2 divisions and was known for his heart, charisma & punching power. His trilogy of fights with “Irish” Mikey Ward are renowned as modern classics - true blood & guts performances that brought out the best in both men. Ward won the first & Gatti won the final two. Gatti died under suspicious circumstances in July 09 in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil. He was without doubt the greatest action fighter of his era & perhaps one of the top 5 action fighters of all time. #EzRepost @boxraw with @ezrepostapp One of the greatest heavyweight spectacles in boxing history occurred on this day 102 years ago. Jess Willard stopped Jack Johnson in round 26 of 45. A racially divided America sought to punish Johnson; no Negro should behave in the manner he did in polite white society. Drinking, partying, cavorting with white women & marrying more than one. Willard was an underrated technician & fought defensively letting Johnson tire. Normally a counterpuncher Johnson was forced to lead & Willard absorbed the blows that usually forced Johnson’s opponents to surrender. Upon defeat Johnson initially congratulated his foe then retroactively stated he took a dive. Many years later Johnson acknowledged the skill of Willard and the two made amends. #boxraw #boxing #History

Genady 'GGG' Golovkin vs. Danny 'Miracle Man' Jacobs. It's easy to give in to hyperbole when looking at these two men. This is the most important Middleweight fight since the Four Horsemen battled their way into the history books more than a generation ago. One man grew up under the thumb of a crumbling Soviet empire on the steppe where histories great conquerors once rode. Another grew up in a Brownsville ghetto amidst a different crumbling empire. Both know the harsh and unforgiving world that gave rise to their work ethic & a natural fit to the equally harsh reality of the boxing ring. The geometry of the fighters are well known; Jacobs enjoys a 2" height & 3" reach advantage & is believed to be the all around better 'boxer' however the crushing power of GGG is the antonym of skill. Many point to a perceived weak point in Jacobs' chin having been starched by Dimitry Pirog. In truth that fight was 7 years ago & since then Jacobs has not gone the distance yet--b/c none of his opponents have survived against him. Amassing 12 Kayos in 12 fights. GGG is the undisputed middleweight champion of the world & undisputed boogeyman of boxing. And yet questions remain about his quality of opposition & the posturing that prevented several important fights from taking place in the last 2 years. At 34 years of age the window for greatness would be closing in theory however you are not likely to find a harder worker than the fierce Kazakh. Conventional wisdom states that Jacobs' must use the ring, move & box. To trade w/GGG is to invite tragedy. Most believe Jacobs' best if only chance is to win a decision. GGG possesses nothing less than the touch of death in either hand. I believe Jacobs will be the larger man. He will jab the body aggressively, GGG is a big puncher, that requires A LOT of energy. Jacobs will weather the storm for 5-6 rounds, probably losing them-Jacobs' class & underrated power will show as the fight wears on. I predict a late stoppage, rd 10-12 for the Miracle Man an upset nothing less than miraculous! Jacobs has survived & beaten cancer. He's faced death. Its like a super bowl of combat sports thie weekend! UFC 209 is lit! The co main event was lost unfortunately but there is still the rematch b/t Tyron Woodley the UFC welterweight champion and Steven 'Wonderboy' Thompson. I believe that Tyron will have made the necessary adjustment in this rematch. He will be better equipped to deal with the range and awkward style of the karateka Thompson and impose his superior wrestling based attack. I expect a TKO in the third round as Tyron looks to hide a furious takedown behind his patented over hand right and will force the ref to stop it after landing hard GnP strikes. Tony "The Bomber" Bellew vs. David "Haymaker" Haye David Haye is mounting a comeback into the world heavyweight landscape at an elite level and believes that being a big box office draw will aid the 36 year old in that goal. Tony Bellew also talked his way into this marquee fight, at 34 he won his first major world title just 10 months ago. A family man, winning in this fight would establish him as arguably the 2nd biggest draw in British boxing. Bellew does not do anything particularly well but he's a hard worker like the proud working class city of Liverpool he calls home. His KO% has actually gone UP moving to Cruiserweight, but is very hittable and has been knocked down & stopped by light heavyweights. Haye is something of playboy but that persona belies underrated boxing skill & arguably the fastest hands over 200#. Haye does not really have a gear other than full throttle! He likes do be in control and closes distance quickly and is a savage finisher. The fight will likely end quickly and at Haye's convenience-Bellew could box the perfect match & all it will take is one clean "Haymaker" to knock Bellew spark out-ending the Liverpudlian's night. Widely considered the creator of 'The Philly Shell' defense. Never able to challenge for a title. His career was cut short when he was shot in the back by the jilted lover of his sister.
